If it hadn't been for my abysmal lack of ability in math, I probably would've become a scientist instead of a Romantic Lit major. As to what kind of science, I never had the opportunity to discover my alter milieu - I love several fields of hard science and several of (what are considered by some) the "softer" sciences. I have now broken these links down by category. Because of the inter-disciplinary nature of so much in the sciences these days, I thought it better to list some links in more than just one category. If you think any other link(s) belong in a different category, or definitely should be in more than one, please send me e-mail. I'd also like to know if you are aware of other good Science links I have missed. Thank you.

Click on the image to see a magnified view of the brine channels containing these organisms. The flourishing life within the briny habitat of sea ice is intricately linked to physical processes. Temperature controls every physical and chemical aspect of ice, including the availability of light. The most notable effect of decreasing temperature, as winter progresses and the ice solidifies, is the reduction of pore space within the ice, and the concurrent increase in the salinity of the brine. Sea ice serves as habitat for an ice-specific food web ( sympagic foodweb ] that includes bacteria, viruses

Over the past several years of my PhD, my research has brought me more than once into the field to investigate insect distributions through field trapping and aspects of moth chemical ecology. My current position in the Vicker's lab (University of Utah), has provided me with an opportunity to augment my experience with more complex laboratory analyses. More importantly, this lab looks at the very basis of insect pheromone processing, genetic and developmental control of pheromone perception and related neuroanatomy, and forming the bases of physiological moth responses to odors within the antennal lobe.

http://www.uni-giessen.de/gfoe/general_information.html
General Information
Landscape Ecology has a long tradition in German-speaking countries which goes back to the first half of the 20th century. Being a key subject mainly for geographers, the methods of this traditional approach became widely applied in landscape planning and other disciplines that deal with landscape analysis. However, in the early 80's Landscape Ecology was 'reinvented' in the English-speaking world and has developed to be one of the key issues in modern day ecology. Since then, great advances have been made in the development of new theoretical and methodological approaches. Our aim is to bring together the various concepts of Landscape Ecology and to promote a deeper understanding of landscape ecological issues.
The Specialist Group 'Landscape Ecology' was founded during the 34th Annual Conference of the Ecological Society GfOE in Giessen. Although this group is going to be one of the Specialists Groups organised within the Ecological Society of Germany, Austria and Switzerland it is open for GfOE-members and non-members alike, no matter from where they are.
The founding members discussed their ideas on the objectives of this new group in a first meeting. In a first exchange of views it became obvious that in European Landscape Ecology there is a need for a platform that promotes discussions and cooperation of landscape ecologists in general. Besides pure natural-scientific approaches, integrative analyses based on, e.g., Natural Science and Social Science are of particular interest. Other topics of interest are ,e.g., spatio-temporal scaling issues in modelling and applied science.

Glossary for Biogeography
NOTE: Terms are arranged according to the following subject categories: biogeography, ecology, evolution, landscape ecology, and taxonomy. This should not be taken to mean that any term is limited in use or definition to a particular discipline; the arrangement is a pedagogical device to help the beginning student in biogeography to make associations among various words and processes. Each term also may be accessed through the index at the end of this document.
Biogeographic terminology
Alien:
a non-native species, especially one introduced to some part of the world through human action.
Altitudinal zonation:
the sorting of plant and animal species according to elevation in response to differences in temperature and precipitation patterns.
Biogeography:
the science that studies the distribution of life, past and present.
Colonization:
the establishment of a population in a place formerly unoccupied by that species. Colonization implies successful reproduction in the new area, not simply the presence of a species there.
Dispersal:
the transport of propagules beyond the limits of a species' distribution area
Distribution area:
the geographic range of a taxon.

AMBIOS Home Page
Integrating Environmental and Population Variation: A Model for Biodiversity Studies (AMBIOS)
Areas of study:
  • The relationships between breeding ecology, niche width and biogeographic range, and their bearing on the future dynamics of biodiversity at a time of accelerating environmental change and extinction will be studied.
  • The development of operational concepts for assessing and describing the very basis of biodiversity will be established This will involve evaluating and comparing phenotypic and genotypic features as measures of the buffering capacity of the components of biodiversity with respect to changing environmental factors, and will be achieved by focusing on genetic heterogeneity levels and phenotypic responses in relation to the environment, and on thermal tolerance.
  • The determination of the mechanisms involved in the transition from polymorphic, interbreeding populations to those of species status, and the elucidation of how such changes can be distinguished from phenotypic plasticity, will be addressed.
  • Techniques for the identification of species and 'lower' taxonomic units will be developed, and new molecular methods tested in those species in which the levels of polymorphism are high.
