The department has a Ph.D. program. Since the formation of the department over 120 students have completed their dissertations . About 20 persons are currently studying for their Ph.D. at the department. Approximately 3-4 new students are accepted each year.
To qualify you should have finished 3 or 4 years of studies at a Swedish university or have an equivalent education. This should include a research preparatory courses ("D-kurs") and preferably a examination paper in animal ecology . To be admitted you must have prepared a plan for your dissertation work together with a teacher at the department. Usually a prerequisite for this is some previous contact, usually during the preparation of an examination, see below.
The research preparatory course ("D-kurs")
is administered by the Department of Ecology but conducted by teachers from the Department of Animal Ecology. This course is given once per year. It is usually followed by an independent project resulting in an

The School of the World is a traveler's education school located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, in the town of Playa Jaco (map) . The programs offered at the school are some of the most original and innovative options available for travelers today, offering more learning vacation options than any other language school or surf camp in Costa Rica. Costa Rica's beautiful countryside, friendly native Spanish speaking people, and stunning beaches form the perfect backdrop for studying Spanish, surfing, art, and digital photography.
Study Spanish
in Costa Rica
Founded in 1997, the School of the World began as one of the first options for studying Spanish near the beach in Costa Rica (most of the language schools are located in or around the capital city which is in the center of the country). College credit soon became available for the unique program and the school continued to grow rapidly. The school's Spanish courses incorporate international Spanish teaching guidelines with Costa Rica's local variations of the language. While the program covers all aspects of Spanish, teachers place a heavy influence on developing verbal skills. Studying in a Spanish speaking country allows students to immediately practice what they have learned with native Spanish-speaking people.

This effort focuses on the full spectrum of soilborne pest control, not just weed control, and involves cooperative research with soil pathologists and nematologists. Identify herbicides which provide acceptable control of nutsedge in the above referenced crops. Determine the most effective and acceptable means of applying herbicides and fumigants to achieve the desired level of efficacy. Develop improved application procedures for fumigants and modifications of existing processes to achieve desired levels of efficacy, efficiency, and reduce potential for exposure for applicators. Develop improved application procedures nonselective or potentially phytotoxic herbicides applied to row middles of vegetable crops.

It is an integral part of the Government Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands. Dúchas as an entity was launched in 1997 after a restructuring of ministerial and departmental responsibilities (the functions now performed by Dúchas were formerly carried out by the Office of Public Works). The Irish word 'Dúchas' translates into English as "heritage, birthright, patrimony, native place, natural state and homeland", and is therefore quite appropriate to the work of the service. There are currently six national Parks in Ireland, and these are:

Functions to maintain a system of nature reserves on the Niagara Escarpment with the objective to support research, education and ecologically sustainable recreation to preserve landscape, ecology and wildlife.
http://www.escarpment.ca/
Our mission:
The Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy was established to preserve the landscape, ecology and wildlife of the Niagara Escarpment by developing and managing a system of nature reserves on which only ecologically sustainable recreational activities would be permitted. Hot off the electronic press!
Your Fall 2004 edition of Precipice is here! The Niagara Escarpment has been designated a World Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations. It is a continuous series of natural areas, consisting of forests, meadows, marshes, rocky cliffs and shorelines, centered on a spectacular 400 million year old geological formation It is home to the most ancient and least disturbed forest ecosystem east of the Rocky Mountains, with thousand year old cedar trees and a wide diversity of plants and animals. Threatened or endangered species include Lady's Slipper Orchid, Massasauga Rattlesnake, Hart's Tongue Fern among others. The Niagara Escarpmentis under immediate threat by development on every side: housing, industry, resource extraction and some recreational activities are destroying its natural features. Our plan is to build a natural ecosystem corridor from Niagara, past Tobermory and all the way to Michigan.

[ Home ] Field Courses Registration Mailing List About John Foster ... Contact Information Hands-on Ecology Focused Environmental Education John Foster, Naturalist Staff training and Professional Development Intensive Field Studies Course What is the New England Naturalist Training Center
The New England Naturalist Training Center (NENTC) is an environmental organization dedicated to the teaching of hands-on ecology focused environmental education; to the general public and staff training for environmental organizations. What is ecology? Ecology is defined as “the complex of relations between living organisms and their environment.” In simple terms it is the nuts and bolts of nature. It is the parts that make up the whole. Using this concept, it is not enough to identify a red-backed salamander but to understand why the animal was present in the first place. It is not enough to identify porcupine tracks and scat but to come to an understanding about what in the general habitat has created the synergies that provides for the animal. It is not enough to identify the Maidenhair fern but to understand the development and continued evolution of the soils that supports it. Through these understandings we as naturalists can more fully observe and appreciate our natural world. A skilled naturalist can anticipant what might be over the crest of the next rise; anticipate where to see black bear, predict where deer are sleeping or know where to go to hear the haunting calls of nesting ravens.
