Research and Education in Ecology, Conservation and Forest Biology
Since 1907 research and education have been the mission of the Harvard Forest, one of the oldest and most intensively studied forests in North America. From a center comprised of 3000 acres of land, research facilities, and the Fisher Museum the scientists, students, and collaborators at the Forest explore topics ranging from conservation and environmental change to land-use history and the ways in which physical, biological and human systems interact to change our earth.

Harvard Forest Research Develops New Estimate of Old-Growth Forest Acreage Remaining in Massachusetts
A new estimate of the amount of old-growth forest remaining in Massachusetts has been recently determined based on research currently being conducted by Tony D'Amato, doctoral candidate in Forestry at UMass, and Dr. David Orwig, forest ecologist at the Harvard Forest. This extensive, field-based research builds on the work of previous studies on old-growth forests in Massachusetts and determines the area of old-growth forest in the state on public lands to be approximately 1119 acres. The majority of these old-growth forests are located in the Berkshire Hills and Taconic Mountains of western Massachusetts; however, a considerable acreage is also found on the slopes of Wachusett Mountain in Princeton, MA. More details on the scope of this research as well as a downloadable list of these old-growth areas can be found in the

Clive Shiff Heads up Zambian Malaria Project
Clive Shiff, PhD, helped develop Zambia's Malaria Institute at Macha (MIAM) and will serve as its principal investigator. Spring 2005 Magazine
Molecular Microbiology and Immunology integrates many disciplines (biochemistry, infectious diseases, virology, parasitology, molecular biology, immunology, ecology structural biology) concerned with the study of the transmission, immunobiology, and pathogenesis of bacterial, parasitic, viral, and immunological diseases of public health importance. Research is at the population, organismal, cellular, and molecular levels. The central premise of this broad approach to the study of disease is that public health problems can best be addressed by understanding basic biological mechanisms. Our research aims to advance the understanding of the biology of disease and to use this knowledge to solve public health problems. Research takes place in the laboratory, in the clinic, and in the field, as the faculty works to combat such enormous public health problems as malaria, sexually transmitted diseases, mosquito-borne encephalitis, tuberculosis, diarrhea, measles, AIDS, and autoimmune diseases. We offer master of health science ( MHS ), master of science (

I am particularly interested in forces that structure the vegetation composition and richness of fragmented riverine forests in temperate Europe . I am also very interested in patterns of seed bank/annual community feedbacks in annual semi-arid communities , especially in the African Sahel. I currently use functional analysis frameworks, such as the concept of Emergent Groups, which, to my mind, is an accurate integration level to integrate both life-traits and species functional unity. o INDUSTRIAL ECOLOGY PROGRAMME The Industrial Ecology Programme (IndEcol) is a multidisciplinary education and research programme at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. NEWS Updated 15 September, 2005 o Guest lecture by Albert Steenge: "Coase meets Leontief; Looking
o for Optimality in Environmental Input-Output Models" Prof.dr. Albert E. Steenge, Department of Economics at the University of Twente, the Netherlands, visits IndEcol in October. On 20 October at 1015 - 1100 he presents his thouhgts on a fundamental problem associated with the well-known Leontief Environmental Input-Output model (dating back to the 1970s). Despite a lot of work over the years, it cannot give the relevant prices for policy programs aiming at environmental improvements. For example, the cost of preventing one unit of a greenhouse gas ending up in the atmosphere cannot be calculated appropriately. Therefore (unless substantially reworked), it is of no use in policies where I-O methodology meets some kind of bargaining. The guest lecture takes place in . To partake by way of video conference , contact IndEcol for information.

The European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI), based in Flensburg, Germany, announces the conclusion of the project ECMI NGO Network for the Improvement of Interethnic Relations in the Republic of Macedonia.
The ECMI NGO Network was established in 2001 as a member-driven Network aimed at improving interethnic relations by development of cooperation among member NGOs in identifying common ground for action on issues related to advancing interethnic dialogue in the Republic of Macedonia. Furthermore, this Network of 78 grass-root NGOs aimed at enhancing the credibility of the NGOs among their local communities and at strengthening the capacity through conceptualization and implementation of joint projects. In order to achieve these aims six Regional Centres at Skopje , Kumanovo, Tetovo, Gostivar, Bitola and Shtip were established as neutral grounds for all NGO members in developing, coordinating and implementing joint projects on issues that cut across ethnic ties. The Network established its own organizational structure headed by the Coordinative Body, composed of 13 members, 12 chosen on the grounds of different regional and ethnic affiliations and 1 ECMI representative, which served as the network facilitator.
