Education for cleaner Indoor air: the quality of indoor air in a house has a direct connection to the health and well-being of the family living there. Pollutant-free air is healthy air. But not all families live in pollutant-free surroundings.(Interview) Human Ecology May, 2004 by Winter, Metta Content provided
in partnership with Read the full article with a Free Trial of HighBeam Research Joseph Laquatra, professor of design and environmental analysis, investigates indoor air quality and the role that financial resources play in affecting indoor environments. He applies information from his research to design strategies for improving the living environments of limited-resource families. More than a decade ago, a Cornell study reported that a disproportionate number of rural New York homes with high levels of radon gas were occupied by limited-resource families. The same was true for homes with high levels of lead dust. Laquatra had conducted the early research on ...

Steve Carr, (505) 277-1821 May 2, 2001 UNM BIOLOGY PROFESSOR RECEIVES EUGENE P. ODUM AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN ECOLOGY EDUCATION University of New Mexico Biology Professor James Brown received the Ecological Society of America (ESA) Eugene P. Odum Award for Excellence in Ecology Education. The award was given for a project titled “Scaling of Biodiversity: Physical and Biological Foundations of Ecological Principles,” with UNM biology professor Bruce Milne and Los Alamos National Laboratory physicist Geoffrey West and Brown as co-private investigators. Brown’s research on biological scaling is a five-year, $960,000 grant funded by The David and Lucile Packard Foundation. The research focuses on one restricted class of emergent phenomena in complex ecological systems: relationships that are self-similar or fractal-like over a wide range of spatial or temporal scales. The so-called scaling relations offer several advantages for theoretical analysis and empirical investigation. The research can be further described by looking at the relationship between the body size of an organism and its metabolic rate, or energy needs for living. The research has practical use ramifications, particularly in medicine and toxicology. Model systems are used to predict a person’s response to new drugs, changes in environment and or surgical procedures. Inherent in the ability to predict and plan for a variety of responses is the need to understand the scaling of structures and functions in organisms as body size varies.

    Ecotourism in Cuba
Nature Tourism is currently growing at an annual rate of 15-20%. Its conception and development is marked by two main tendencies. On the one hand, the recognition of the importance of integrating nature conservation and economic development through the creative and sustained management of natural and historic-cultural resources. On the other, a change in the preferences of holidaymakers who are increasingly demanding a participatory, nature-oriented tourism. The Cuban archipelago is formed by the island of Cuba, the largest of the Antilles - spanning 1,138 km from east to west - the Isle of Youth and more than 4,000 cays that surround the big island to the north and south. Its total surface area is 110,922 km2. The climate is tropical, seasonally humid and tempered by the sea. Cuba has 6,073 km of coastline, of which 345 are beaches: 225 km on the northern coast and 120 km on the southern coast. Karats formations cover 5% of the territory, including the largest and deepest caves in Cuba, notable for their speleological and archaeological values. The wealth of its flora is evident in its 6,370 higher plant species so far reported. Some 3,180 of them - around 51% - are endemic to Cuba.

(Biostatistics/Ornithology) Dr. Robert P. Gendron Professor 109 Weyandt Hall rgendron@iup.edu Homepage Evolution on the web for Biology Students Interests I am studying an aphid, Hormaphis hamamelidis , that forms galls on the leaves of witch hazel plants. Each gall contains a female (the stem mother) and up to 50-70 of her offspring, all daughters. Galls are not distributed randomly, but instead tend to be clumped on certain leaves and trees. I am interested in the behavioral mechanisms that cause this clumping and how this affects the reproductive success of both the aphids and the plants. There are other aspects to this insect-plant interaction that are also quite interesting. For example, some of the aphids within a gall appear to act as "workers," leaving reproduction to their sisters. This phenomenon may shed some light on the evolution of social behavior in insects.

This training module, Working Respectfully with Families: A Practical Guide for Educators and Human Service Workers was developed for the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory's Integration of Education and Human Services Project. The goal of this project is to increase the ability of education and human services providers to form effective and supportive partnerships with each other and with the families they serve. The purpose of this background paper is to familiarize the trainers of these modules and participants in the workshops with the research, theories, and practice knowledge that are the foundation of the workshop. The specific strategies and applications of a Family-Centered Approach are covered in the workshop materials.
