Youth Education Programs
This Spring, the Saugus River Watershed Council is offering free Marsh Ecology youth education programs for schools within the Saugus River watershed. Programs are suitable for grades 6 through 12 and will run during May and June. Through field exploration and hands-on science activities, students will learn about what lives in a marsh, how plants and animals have adapted to marsh life, differences between salt and fresh water marshes, and how marsh plants and animals act as water quality indicators. These programs meet aspects of Strand 1: Inquiry, Strand 2: Life Sciences and Strand 4: Science, Technology, and Human Affairs for grades 6 through 12. Programs will include classroom activities followed by field exploration at Reedy Meadow, Rumney Marsh, or Camp Nihan. For registration or more information please contact Nicole Cave-Luongo at (781) 233-5046 or nicolecave99@yahoo.com.

Ecology in Further and Higher Education: Is ecology teaching just a matter of fairy tales?
by Julian Doberski The early ecologists did not necessarily see their role as a narrow one. It was not a case of being driven solely by a desire to explain the observations of natural history. In 1916, F.W. Oliver, the president of the British Ecological Society, spoke of the need for ecologists 'to establish their subject in general esteem' and to apply themselves to 'profitable channels' (Sheil, 1987). His interest in what might be called 'applied ecology' was demonstrated in a book written in collaboration with an engineer dealing with the question of how vegetation might be used for coastal and flood protection (Carey and Oliver, 1918). It is only in recent years that there has been a resurgence of enthusiasm for what is now referred to as 'soft engineering'! Perhaps the most important figure in the early history of animal ecology in the United Kingdom was Charles Elton. His seminal book 'Animal Ecology', was very influential in the development and teaching of ecology. He reflected on his vision of the future of ecology in the preface of the book, writing ' Ecology is a branch of zoology which is perhaps more able to offer immediate practical help to mankind than any of the others, and in the present rather parlous state of civilisation it would seem particularly important to include it in the training of young zoologists' .

ecological importance of photosynthesis, however, often gets short-changed, or is sometimes even completely ignored. Ecologically speaking, the details of photosynthesis are not as important as how photosynthesis, along with respiration, is largely responsible for running the carbon cycle, one of the most important processes for life on Earth. . In fact, I suggest that ecology should be taught

Who is the institute for? Biology teachers from across Canada are invited to apply (see, Application Form ). Twenty master biology teachers will be selected*. Master teachers are those that have shown leadership in professional development, innovation in teaching practice, or curriculum development at provincial levels. Candidates are requested to submit three letters of reference with the application; from your school principal, school jurisdiction, and a professional science teacher association or provincial education department describing this leadership. * The Universities of Calgary and Alberta respect, appreciate, and encourage diversity in applications. We also encourage applications from those working with under-represented groups in science (e.g., First Nations school districts, large urban districts with diverse ethnicity). Ecology Education Fellowships in Baltimore
Received: 12 May 2003
Dates: Flexible. Can be summer, 2003, and/or during the 2003-2004 school year. Stipend: $150/day for up to 40 days ($6,000 maximum) Purpose: The Education Fellows will work with scientists and educators in the Baltimore Ecosystem Study (BES) and the Parks and People Foundation (PPF) to develop materials to engage K-12 students in long-term ecological research in and about the Baltimore urban ecosystem. Each investigation will build on current research of BES and will be tailored to specific learning objectives for one or more target grade and subject. Included will be general background, specific information about Baltimore, protocols for establishing research projects on the school grounds or in nearby neighborhoods and/or for using BES-generated data, suggested activities for teachers, and mechanisms for sharing results with other educators and with BES scientists. The materials will be posted on the BES Education Web Pages, and will be the subject of workshops in the coming months.
What will each Fellow do?

CORAL REEF ECOLOGY EDUCATION PROGRAMS on the GREAT BARRIER REEF Students from The School for International Training (U.S.A.) at Lizard Island. We design and deliver Coral Reef Ecology Education Programs for groups of Secondary and Tertiary students. These field study courses are 1 to 4 weeks in duration and usually take place at either Lizard Island Research Station (a facility of the Australian Museum) or Orpheus Island Research Station (a facility of James Cook University ). Both stations combine modern teaching and accommodation facilities with rapid access to some of the best reef communities on the Great Barrier Reef. Many groups also choose to combine their reef study program with a visit to the World Heritage rainforests found along the North Queensland coast, a strategy that allows students to gain first-hand experience of two of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet. Follow the links below for more information. Students from the USA please note - through our connections with Arcadia University , Pennsylvania, and A typical Reef Education Program might contain the following components: A) Lectures on topics such as:
  • Identifying major reef taxa - corals, fishes, echinoderms, molluscs.

Ecology Society of America - Strategies for Ecology Education, Development, and Sustainability (SEEDS) Program The ESA Strategies for Ecology Education, Development, and Sustainability (SEEDS) Program began in 1996 as a collaborative effort to work towards increasing the number of minorities in the field of ecology. Student field trips are an important component of the program and aim to foster greater student identification with ecology through direct field experience. In June of 2003, JRBP hosted the SEEDS field trip to Northern California which included two days of field work at Jasper Ridge, a visit to Hopkins Marine Station in Monterey, and other sites in the Bay Area. Attendees included 17 students from ten schools, three SEEDS faculty, three staff members from the Ecological Society of America, and one participant from the All Nations Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (ANLSAMP).
