    Ecology Education Network
The Ecological Society of America (ESA) is pleased to announce the beta launch of the Ecology Education Network (ecoed.net). The goal of this library is to provide educators a forum to contribute and locate peer reviewed, scientifically and pedagogically sound ecology education content. EcoEdNet will strive to foster a community of ecology education users and contributors. Ecoed.net is a partner in the Bioscience Education Network (BEN) a collaborative of more than 10 professional societies and coalitions of biology education partners, funded by the National Science Foundation and coordinated by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Its purpose is to coordinate the ongoing development of digital library collections for the teaching and learning of undergraduate biology, with users at the center of the development. The Ecological Society of America The Ecological Society of America (ESA) is North America's leading professional society of ecologists, representing over 7,800 ecological researchers in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and more than 70 other nations. Founded in 1915, ESA seeks to promote the responsible application of ecological principles to the solution of environmental problems through scientific reports, journals, research, and expert testimony to Congress. The Society convenes a conference every summer featuring the latest finding in ecological research which attracts 3,000 scientists and students, as well as members of the media.

What Programs Does Ferry Beach Provide?
Ferry Beach Ecology School (FBES) is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to providing ecological education to 3rd-8th grade classes. Our interdisciplinary ecology curriculum focuses on teaching hands-on lessons in basic ecology by using the outdoors as a classroom a classroom where learning occurs through exploration, scientific investigation, discovery and sensory awareness. FBES naturalists take students to a variety of ecosystems residential programs , as well as day programs and outreach programs to public and private schools. Why Do Classes Come to Ferry Beach? A trip to FBES can be a once in a lifetime opportunity for students to explore and learn about ecosystems such as tidepools, beaches, dunes, salt marshes and coastal forests- places that many of them may never have seen before. The experience of being away from home and learning to live with and get along with others is also invaluable. School teachers from all over New England use this experience as an integral part of their science curriculum. Pre-visit and post-visit activity manuals as well as free teacher training during your visit to Ferry Beach Ecology School help to ensure that the week can be incorporated into the regular school year.
On lessons , students learn to use disciplines such as oceanography, geology, biology, chemistry, climatology and history as tools for understanding ecosystems, organisms, and ultimately, their relationship to the world they live in. FBES naturalists address different learning styles and make learning challenging and fun by using a variety of teaching tools including; activities, games, props, field notebooks and skits and songs. Students also benefit greatly through living with others, and learn personal responsibility by performing various duties during their stay such as setting up their

GENERAL ECOLOGY an introduction Index ECOLOGY - The science that treats the spectrum of interrelationships existing between organisms and their environment and among groups of organisms. Ecology is the science that is concerned with how individual organisms and populations of organisms live together and with their environmental surroundings. The reason environmentalism and ecology get mixed up in the media is that the scientific basis of an endangered species problems come from studies ecologists have conducted determining the ecological relationship between the species and its deteriorating environmental conditions. The environmentalists use these studies as the backbone for reasons to protect and preserve our natural environments. GENERAL ECOLOGY- basics and definitions Basics of ecological understanding.

Seized by Agreement, Swamped by Understanding
Social Ecology Education and Research David Russell
    History of an educational innovation
The roots of social ecology are embedded in the fertile soil that was the Hawkesbury Diploma in Rural Extension, first offered in 1970, at what was then known as Hawkesbury Agricultural College and now the University of Western Sydney. The program changed its title to Graduate Diploma in Extension in 1974, and again in 1982, to Graduate Diploma in Social Communication. During this period the key features of the program remained the same: it was always highly experiential; it overtly fostered the learner's growth in self esteem; and it espoused the goal of measuring learning against a yardstick of social relevance. The decision to change the title yet again was greatly influenced by the writings of people like Gregory Bateson (1972), Anthony Wilden (1980) and Murray Bookchin (1982). The common ground that these authors were exploring was the co-evolution of any system and its environment. Not only do the players evolve; but so do the patterns of relationships that link them and so does the context in which these players act. Another connecting theme was the pursuit of an improved quality of relating - people to people and people to their natural environment. Yet another was the dropping of metaphors of power, hierarchy, input and output, and substituting metaphors of complementarity, fit, pattern, aesthetics and elegance. The term

    kis BACKGROUND AND CONTACT INFORMATION
Our Education Programs are designed to communicate current peer-reviewed environmental research and to foster ecological literacy in schools through field study programs and professional development workshops, and for the public through interpretative and non-formal adult education programs. Programs are developed through strategic partnerships and collaborations with other university departments, local government agencies, professional societies and leading education providers in the community. Programs operate on a principle of cost-recovery through user-fees, targeted project funding and strategic partnerships in order to be a self-supporting program and maintain affordable fee structures for user groups. kis As a university-based biological field station and institute, we are in a unique position to act as a "bridging organization" between the environmental research, management, and education communities.
