Reef Ecology
Year Level: 11 - 12
Main idea:
Students explore the ecology of the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem and gain an appreciation of the diversity of life that it contains and the evolutionary process that have shaped the plants and animals that live there today.
Key understandings
  • An ecosystem consists of both living and non-living components. Living things can be recognised using various characteristics. Energy flows through ecosystems. Radiant energy from the sun continually enters the system. It may be converted to other forms of energy, used, stored, transformed into heat energy, or reflected back into space. Matter cycles within ecosystems. The cycles of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon and water typify this process. By replacing natural ecosystems with agricultural and/or urban ecosystems, human activity has altered the natural flow of energy and matter. An understanding of the way ecosystems function is a critical part of ecosystem management. Changes in ecosystems may result from natural processes or human activity, or both.

Activities and Classroom Resources
NIWA frequently hosts Royal Society of New Zealand Teacher Fellows. During their year at NIWA the Teacher Fellows participate in the life of the institute (including field work), engage in discussion, and generally enhance their science skills and background. They contribute to NIWA by working on defined projects and, in some cases, creating teaching resources and activities. Teachers should also check out the material in Stuff for Students , especially the ideas for projects.

This review is written for an audience of ecology educators who either a) have never used EcoBeaker (EB) or b) have used EB version 1.0 and are curious about EB 2.0. Mine is one of many campuses using EB 1.0 for ecology courses. With many of us at SDSU being interested in developing more student-active learning methods for our undergraduate classes, faculty really liked the software and students did too. Since several of my faculty and graduate student colleagues have used old and new versions, I asked them to contribute their comments about EB for this review, making this a group effort.

Aquatic Ecology Group Home Page
The Aquatic Ecology Group (AEG) consists of scientists from both the Department of Zoology at the University of Toronto and the Aquatic Ecosystems Science Section of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. The purpose of this partnership is to foster and develop a centre for excellence in aquatic ecology. Research and teaching activities are directed towards an increased understanding of the structure and productivity of aquatic ecosystems. While research and teaching activities are the primary goals of the partnership, it also focuses on developing new links between science and policy. Members of the Aquatic Ecology Group have joined together to conduct collaborative research in the following areas of mutual interest:

This main room is used in many ways, from conference space to classroom.
The College of Human Ecology winter quarter 2000 faculty meeting was held in one of The House's meeting rooms.
    Objective
The Human Ecology House at 1621 N. 4th Street, Columbus, Ohio, was established in 2000 by the College of Human Ecology to provide a holistic, real world learning center for students, faculty, and staff conducting educational and research activities requested by the community in support of the well-being of individuals, families, and communities.
    Overview
The College of Human Ecology has more than a century of experience in providing students with hands-on learning experiences in how to assist individuals, families, and communities. Two visible examples are the A. Sophie Rogers Laboratory School for early childhood education, and the Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic. Both of these programs provide service to community members while creating research and training opportunities for faculty and students. In addition, we routinely deliver programs in Ohio communities, for example through OSU Extension Family and Consumer Sciences, on such topics as nutrition education, delinquency prevention, child care provider training, and family financial management.
