Buddhist Monastery Just north of the ancient Buddhist town of Boudhanath is Kopan hill, reaching up out of the terraced fields of the Katmandu valley. Dominated by its magnificent Bodhi tree, it was once the home of the astrologer to the king of Nepal. Now, appropriately, Kopan is a thriving monastery of 260 Nepali and Tibetan monks, a place of study for the 150 nuns of nearby Khachoe Ghakyi Ling Nunnery, and a spiritual oasis for hundreds of visitors yearly from around the world. It is also the wellspring of the FPMT, a network of some ninety centres and activities world-wide, themselves expressions of the Buddha activity of Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche It was to this hill that these lamas first came with their first Western students in 1969. Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave his first public teachings at Kopan in 1971 to a group of twelve Westerners, an intensive one-month introduction to Buddhism that became the model for the meditation courses now held throughout the year at Kopan. Kopan the Monastery
The monastery had its beginnings in the Solu Khumbu region of the Himalayan Mountains. In 1971 Lama Zopa, reincarnation of a yogi of the tiny hamlet of Lawudo, fulfilled the promise of the previous Lawudo Lama to start a monastic school for the local children. Rinpoche called it Mount Everest centre.

Teaching and Other Professional Activities
Since I come from a family of educators my mother is a high school teacher and my father is a retired college professor I take teaching and mentoring very seriously. During my time as a graduate student, I have served four semesters as a teaching assistant and two terms as a lecturer, all for Geography/IES 339, Environmental Conservation, a course geared toward advanced undergraduates and first-year graduate students. I am especially qualified to teach courses pertaining to environmental geography, cultural and political ecology, development, environmental history, and geography of Latin America. Besides classroom teaching, I have also taken an interest in mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. This includes helping to formulate research projects, planning academic careers, and building contacts with other scholars, particularly in Latin America. In 2001 I received an award from the UW's Graduate Student Council, for excellence in mentoring fellow graduate students. My mentoring activities have helped prepare me for the advising responsibilities that I consider central to a career in academia. I also believe strongly in forging links with scholars in other countries; to this end, during my research year in Argentina, I gave lectures (in Spanish) in college geography and history courses. In 2004, I assisted my advisor

WHAT IS PROJECT LEARNING TREE? Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an award-winning international environmental education program designed for teachers and informal educators who work with students from pre-kindergarten through high school. PLT uses the forest as a "window" into the natural world, helping young people gain an awareness and knowledge of the environment and their place within it. PLT teaches students "how to think, not what to think" about our complex environment. PLT activities incorporate a variety of learning styles, while developing skills in critical and creative thinking, problem solving and cooperative learning. PLT provides ready-made lessons and activities that can be used to supplement existing curricula. PLT activities are action-oriented. They can be used in any order and require little, if anything, in the way of equipment. PLT activities work in the city or in the country, indoors or outdoors, whether there are acres of forestland or just a single tree.

    About Project Learning Tree
Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an award-winning, multidisciplinary environmental education program for educators working with students in PreK through grade 12. PLT helps students gain awareness and knowledge of the natural and built environment, their place within it, as well as their responsibility for it. PLT is one of the most widely used environmental education programs in the United States and abroad. Over 500,000 educators have been trained to use PLT materials, and more than 25 million students have been reached in the United States, the Trust Territories, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Japan, Brazil and Mexico.
    History of Project Learning Tree
PLT has a distinguished history. The concept for Project Learning Tree (PLT) originated during a gathering of environmental education and resource management personnel sponsored by the Western Regional Environmental Education Council in Wyoming in the early 1970s. The conception of a multidisciplinary preK-12 supplemental curriculum project formulated at that meeting grew until the completed program was introduced in 1976. Hundreds of teachers and resource management specialists assisted by developing, writing and testing the activities.

    Adaptations
Fish Heads: A Lesson on Adaptation Using photographs of various fish heads, students are encouraged to identify differences between different specimens and to hypothesize about the natural history (i.e. where it lives, what it eats) of each specimen based on its physical characteristics. Educators may choose to use other specimens in place of or in addition to the fish head specimens. CSCS Grade 6 Earth Science: 5c,d; Grade 7 Life Science: 3d; Grades 9-12 Biology/Life Sciences 6a The Beaks of the Finches This activity allows students to explore the meaning of adaptation by allowing them to "become" birds with different beak (i.e. tools) types. The efficiency with which students can "consume" seeds is used as a measurement for potential survival or extinction. CSCS Grade 6 Earth Science: 5c,d; Grades 9-12 Biology/Life Sciences 6a

    Abstract:
For more than a decade many ecological educators within ESA have dedicated their efforts to increasing the quality and availability of undergraduate laboratory activities to teach ecology. In 1993, the ESA published a collection of peer reviewed, field-tested, and commonly formatted Experiments to Teach Ecology Experiments Volume 2, is actually nested within our larger NSF funded project "Teaching Issues and Experiments in Ecology (TIEE)," which will include web and CD-ROM resources to teach current issues in ecology (global warming, coral reef loss, exotic species, etc.) and a digital library of pedagogical resources. We are presently seeking faculty to field test and review submitted experiments as well as submissions to its companion Issues to Teach Ecology Keywords: ecological education, experiments to teach ecology, active-learning, inquiry, pedagogy.

My primary assignment involves designing, distributing, and evaluating non-credit educational programs for use with parents and children in communities across our state and nation. I am a member of the graduate faculty and enjoy working with students who are interested in community-based education. Student Involvement Because I am a full-time professional in Kansas Research and Extension, I do not teach at the undergraduate or graduate level. I may, however, teach intersession courses on topics that relate to my extension work. I enjoy visiting classes and talking with students about community-based education and issues that concern parents and children. I am interested in working with students in the development of publications for distribution to parents and teachers.
