Lab tests rule out Ebola in Zimbabwe
Story Tools JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) Laboratory tests have ruled out the possibility that an Angolan trader in Zimbabwe died of the feared Ebola virus, the U.N. health agency said Tuesday. Zimbabwe health authorities announced over the weekend that the man who died in the resort town of Victoria Falls on Dec. 25 had exhibited symptoms consistent with Ebola. The announcement touched off fears the highly contagious disease could spread from the continent's equatorial regions to southern Africa for the first time. But Dr. Welile Shashas, a spokesman for the World Health Organization, said the South African National Institute for Communicable Diseases tested samples sent by Zimbabwe and found it was not Ebola. "To the immense relief of everyone, this was not Ebola" or a similar hemorrhagic fever, he said. The actual cause of death remains to be determined. But confirmation that it was not Ebola has allowed emergency health teams gathered at Victoria Falls to lift quarantine restrictions imposed on staff who tended to the patient, Shashas said.

Hysteria Strain of Ebola Fever
By Michael Fumento
Washington Times, February 8, 2001
"There is a crisis brewing in the world that we ignore at our peril. The Ebola virus is back, and it’s spreading." So declared the opening line of a December Business Week article: "Ebola Could Soon Be the West’s Problem, Too." Soon? Ebola fever is already sweeping the West. But this pathogen is hysteria. And clearly initial infection confers no immunity, because we’ve been through all this before. Five years ago, after an African epidemic in the Congo, the disease spawned the hit movie Outbreak , with an Ebola-like virus threatening to wipe out the United States, and a TV movie, Virus , starring Ebola itself. CNN gave us a special report, "The Apocalypse Bug," while Newsweek 's cover blared: "Killer Virus." Making Panic Profitable The outbreak vaulted Newsday reporter Laurie Garrett’s sensationalist book, The Coming Plague , onto the best-seller list and got her a Pulitzer to boot. Richard Preston also cashed in on Ebola fear with his best-selling The Hot Zone and Garrett’s back at it with a new book

DR. FREDERICK A. MURPHY TALKS ABOUT THE EBOLA VIRUS An Interview by Sean Henahan, Access Excellence The book "The Hot Zone" and the film "Outbreak" have seized the public's imagination and brought into focus many issues regarding the very real threats posed by new and emerging diseases. In this interview we talk with Frederick A. Murphy, D.V.M., Ph.D., Dean of School of Veterinary Medicine, UC Davis. At the time of the 'Reston incident', Dr. Murphy was the director of the National Center for Infectious Diseases at the CDC in Atlanta. Dr. Murphy is considered one of the world authorities on viruses. He was the first one to look at Ebola virus 'face-to-face' in the electron microscope. Dr. Murphy appears in "The Hot Zone" and his now famous photo of the Ebola virus appears in the film "Outbreak". Note: Dr. Murphy has also provided an extensive [1]bibliography and[2] three excellent electron micrographs to accompany this interview.

Ebola hunter relishes trips inside African 'Hot Zone'
Dr. Scott Dowell, left, was among the CDC officials helping contain the Ebola outbreak in Uganda By Troy Goodman CNN.com Health writer ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) Most travelers would avoid booking a plane trip to a country where a red alert was issued for an outbreak of severe hemorrhagic fever. But Dr. Scott Dowell jumped at the opportunity several weeks ago when his bosses at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta asked him to join up with a CDC team flying into Africa to help contain the latest spread of deadly Ebola virus. Five years ago, in fact, Dowell had already gone to the Central African country of Zaire where Ebola had emerged and had begun killing hundreds of people. The desire to help control the disease's spread and possibly save lives keeps him from worrying about the risks. ALSO

Five years after the Ebola virus killed 286 people in Congo, the disease has reappeared in Uganda. Seventy-three people are dead to date. Ebola, one of the most destructive and fatal new infectious diseases, causes massive bleeding, and most victims die within a week. The disease is highly contagious and untreatable. A Medical Officer at Lacor hospital in Gulu, 224 miles north of the Ugandan capital, examines a child suspected of being infected with the Ebola virus Oct.17. Already, the fearsome virus has killed a reported 72 people in Uganda. AP Photo/Sayyid Azim Ebola is one of many "emerging infectious diseases" that are causing alarm among public health types: In 1997, a bird flu "jumped the species barrier" from chickens to people in Hong Kong. A similar "jump" caused an influenza epidemic that killed about 20 million people in 1918. HIV, the cause of AIDS , is now known to mutate constantly, meaning it may continually escape drugs. WASHINGTON (CNN) A civilian Army researcher at Fort Detrick, Maryland, is in isolation after possibly being exposed to the Ebola virus, Army officials said Thursday. The researcher accidentally pricked herself with a needle that contained a weakened form of the Ebola virus last week while she was injecting mice with the virus as part of a research effort. The woman has shown no signs of the fatal illness, but will remain at Fort Detrick for up to 30 days of isolation. Local government officials have been notified, but no one else is believed to have been exposed.

    http://www.astdhpphe.org//infect/ebola.html
    Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever
    • Ebola hemorrhagic fever is caused by several Ebola viruses. The source of these viruses in nature is not known. People can get Ebola hemorrhagic fever by direct contact with virus-infected blood, body fluids, organs, or semen. There is no known cure or treatment. Recent outbreaks in humans have occurred in areas where medical supplies and care were inadequate. The outbreaks were controlled by using barrier nursing techniques. Under normal circumstances, travelers are at low risk of getting the disease. To eliminate the risk, travelers should avoid areas where Ebola outbreaks are occurring.
What is Ebola hemorrhagic fever Ebola hemorrhagic fever is one of the deadliest of a group of diseases called viral hemorrhagic fevers. They range in seriousness from relatively mild illnesses to severe and potentially fatal diseases. All forms of viral hemorrhagic fever begin with fever and muscle aches. Depending on the virus, the disease can get worse until the patient becomes very ill with breathing problems, severe bleeding (hemorrhage), kidney problems, and shock. Viral hemorrhagic fevers are caused by viruses from four families: filoviruses, arenaviruses, flaviviruses, and bunyaviruses. The usual hosts for most of these viruses are rodents or arthropods (such as ticks and mosquitoes). In some cases, the natural host for the virus is not known.

Image courtesy CDC/C Goldsmith. The first clinical trial to test an Ebola vaccine in humans is halfway complete, and researchers are seeking additional volunteers to begin the final phase. At the same time, researchers are pursuing two very different new vaccines that may prove more useful in outbreak situations. The clinical trial, conducted by the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), is assessing the safety and immune response of different doses of a DNA vaccine. Fourteen volunteers have enrolled so far. An additional seven to ten subjects are needed to complete the study. For this reason, researchers are pursuing other strategies to develop a vaccine that could be used in an Ebola outbreak. Usually the term “vaccine” refers to a preparation that elicits immunity, so that the recipient is protected if exposure occurs. In the case of Ebola, which occurs rarely, it is unlikely that everyone would be vaccinated even if such a vaccine existed. Health workers need to be immune themselves, and they also need a vaccine that they can administer either before or possibly in the early stages of an outbreak. “Accelerated” vaccine protects monkeys Last summer, NIAID researchers described an “accelerated” vaccine that protects monkeys from Ebola infection a month after receiving a single dose.
