New Zealand based therapist David Epston is co-author (with Rick Maisel and Ali Borden) of Biting the Hand that Starves You: Inspiring Resistance to Anorexia/Bulimia. (2004, W. W. Norton, New York). David’s approach is highly collaborative. Known as Anti-a/b it is based on the idea that a/b deceives people into thinking that it is their friend, coach, mentor or lover and can offer them great gifts, and that by helping people uncover this deceit a/b can be contested and finally repudiated. Archives of this work can be found at www.narrativeapproaches.com
David is also well known as one of the founders of narrative therapy and as co-author with Michael White of the classic text Narrative Means to Therapeutic Ends. For further information:

Do you:
  • feel that others pressure you to be thin? feel guilty about what you eat? feel that your weight is one of the only things you can control? feel you've become isolated from family and friends? prefer to eat alone? use food as a comfort? consume large amounts of food in a brief amount of time? feel fat despite others telling you that you're not? ever exercise excessively? ever induce vomiting after eating or drinking? count all the hidden calories or grams of fat in each bite of food? often feel depressed and unhappy with yourself? diet excessively? use laxatives, diet pills, or diuretics each week? weigh yourself several times each day? eat when you're lonely, anxious, depressed, or nervous? think that you might have an eating disorder?
If you answered yes to several of these questions, you may have an eating disorder. An eating disorder is not just about eating, body weight, and dieting; it is much more than that. It often begins as a way to control weight and just gets out of control. Please remember that an eating disorder is something that can be treated with therapy and hard work. You can heal!

http://www.uiowa.edu/~ucs/eatdis.html
Eating Disorders Eating disorders are, unfortunately, very common today. Most of us want to have healthy, well-functioning, and attractive bodies. However, our celebrity-smitten society places undue emphasis on the attractiveness part, and then tells us that to be attractive, we must be thin. Our normal desire to maintain a healthy body weight can become abnormal when we are constantly under peer and societal pressure to attain and maintain a weight and shape that is not natural for us. Eating disorders include extreme emotions, attitudes, and behaviors surrounding weight and food issues, and are experienced by both women and men. They include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. All are serious emotional and physical problems that can have life-threatening consequences. Eating Disorders can occur at any age, but they most commonly begin during the teen years. Going away to college can almost be defined as a risk factor for developing an eating disorder in a young person who feels uncomfortable about his/her body and is not sure how s/he is going to 'fit in' and make new friends on campus. Are you concerned about your eating or food-related habits, or those of a friend? Most of us know something about eating disorders, but our information is often incomplete and inaccurate. The following will provide basic facts about eating disorders, what you can, and

Eating Disorders Introduction
Due to cultural ideals of feminine beauty, young women feel a strong desire to be thinner than their bodies naturally tend to be. As a result, they change their eating patterns and they may develop eating disorders. The most common eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia. Both eating disorders are more common among young adults than at any other age. What is Anorexia Nervosa?
Anorexia Nervosa is a serious psychological and physiological disorder. Anorexia Nervosa has the following characteristics:
  • The anorexic restricts eating to the point of emaciation.
  • The anorexic may exercise constantly and take laxatives or diuretics to lose weight.
  • The most common ages of onset are 11 and 18, the beginning and ending of adolescence.
  • The disorder is mostly diagnosed in the upper middle class. However, both rich and poor can develop the disorder.
  • Even though anorexics are extremely thin and underweight, most insist that they are not hungry or thin.
  • With psychological help about 1/3 of all anorexics get better. About 20% die of the disorder.

A comprehensive program for clinicians. Treatment of mental illness requires mind-brain thinking. The dichotomy of mind and brain is now giving way to the beginnings of integration. Both pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy can help people with psychiatric disorders. But how are the clinical effects of chemical and psychotherapeutic treatments maximized? This book summarizes research in combined treatments, and discusses the manner in which each can aid the other.

What are eating disorders? Eating disorders often are long-term illnesses that may require long-term treatment. In addition, eating disorders frequently occur with other mental disorders such as depression, substance abuse, and anxiety disorders (NIMH, 2002). The earlier these disorders are diagnosed and treated, the better the chances are for full recovery. This fact sheet identifies the common signs, symptoms, and treatment for three of the most common eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder (NIMH, 2002).
