From the legendary fury of Mt. Vesuvius in the year 79 A.D. to the devastating convulsion of Kobe, Japan, in 1994, this four-part series narrated by actor Stacy Keach tells the stories of these great natural disasters, the scientists who struggle to understand and predict them, and the people whose lives are forever changed by their merciless force. In this Web companion piece, original articles by journalists Daniel Pendick and Kathy Svitil explain the science behind volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis, and feature original animations that illustrate the action of these natural phenomena. You can also Ask the Experts your questions, and explore other Savage Sites on the Web.

  • Choose a safe place in every roomunder a sturdy table or desk or against an inside wall where nothing can fall on you. Practice DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON at least twice a year. Drop under a sturdy desk or table, hold on, and protect your eyes by pressing your face against your arm. If there's no table or desk nearby, sit on the floor against an interior wall away from windows, bookcases, or tall furniture that could fall on you. Teach children to DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON! Choose an out-of-town family contact. Consult a professional to find out additional ways you can protect your home, such as bolting the house to its foundation and other structural mitigation techniques. Take a first aid class from your local Red Cross chapter. Keep your training current. Get training in how to use a fire extinguisher from your local fire department.

New Zealand's position on the boundary of the Australian and Pacific plates is the reason for the large number of earthquakes we witness. Underneath New Zealand these two huge plates are grinding together in three distinct ways. To the east of the North Island the Pacific plate is being forced under the Australian plate. Under the South Island the two plates push past each other sideways, and to the south of New Zealand the Australian plate is being forced under the Pacific plate. There is still a great deal to learn about the causes of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides. The new and higher quality information from the GeoNet monitoring network will be crucial to improving our understanding of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and landslides. The data from GeoNet will contribute to improving disaster risk management in New Zealand communities. A better understanding of the hazard provides the basis for improved readiness and reduction of the community’s exposure to risk, while accurate and timely information aids the response to an event and subsequent recovery.

Timeline of events Earthquakes When the Earth moves Earthquakes are caused by the motion of tectonic plates - individual sections that make up the Earth's surface like panels on a football. Immense strain accumulates along fault lines where adjacent plates meet. When the rock separating the plates give way, sudden seismic ground-shaking movement occurs. Of course, if we want to know why earthquakes happen, we need to dig a little deeper. Centre of the Earth The Earth is made up of three main layers:
  • The core is at the centre of the Earth The mantle is a mobile semi-molten layer around the core The outer-shell of the Earth is called the crust. Scientists call this the lithosphere - it's the part we're on now

Welcome to All About Earthquakes ! Earthquakes have sparked man's curiosity since ancient times. They have also disrupted lives, destroyed great monuments and cities and created great tidal waves. After a brief tour of this site, you should know all about earthquakes. You can navigate through the site by clicking on the page link to the left that interests you most. Or you can visit the entire site by clicking on the "next page" links at the bottom of each page. At the All About Earthquakes site you will learn the history of earthquakes . We will talk about some of the great disasters of history, and how men have viewed earthquakes throughout the ages. The Science of Earthquakes has had many recent advances with new theories on plate tectonics and subduction. In this section, you will find out how earthquakes work. Many places around the world are subject to earthquakes, some more so than others. We'll show you where the danger areas are. What should you do about earthquakes? Of course, there is no stopping an earthquake, but you can be prepared for the event. We will tell you what you should do to prepare for an earthquake, how to survive an earthquake and, finally, what you should do when the shaking stops. Be sure to visit our Bulletin Board with discussion about earthquakes. If you have any questions regarding the material here it can be posted there or

    131. San Andreas Fault

Jeffrey Marshall, Dan Orange, and Alfred Hochstaedter; html by Joe Overton Earthquakes occur along plate boundaries, like the one shown at right between the Pacific Plate (to the west) and the North American Plate (to the east). The yellow dots represent earthquake epicenters, which are aligned along faults. As the plates move, stress builds up along faults. When this stress is released, the blocks or plates move and an earthquake occurs. The distribution of epicenters reveals that several fault zones on either side of San Francisco Bay and Santa Clara Valley take up portions of the movement between the Pacific and North American Plates. One of these faults, the San Andreas, runs through San Juan Bautista, the Santa Cruz mountains, north through the San Francisco Peninsula, off shore from the Golden Gate, and then on-shore just east of the Pt. Reyes Peninsula. The San Andreas Fault is considered the main boundary between the Pacific and North American Plates. At five in the afternoon on October 17, 1989 the San Andreas fault system in northern California had its first major quake since 1906. The quake was responsible for 62 deaths, 3,757 injuries, and over $6 billion in damage. Over 18,000 homes and 2,600 businesses were damaged and about 3,000 people were left homeless. This self-guided field trip takes you on a tour of the Santa Cruz region after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. Select a topic which interests you below by clicking on the highlighted key word. You wake in the darkness, unsure about what has disturbed you. Strangely, the clock on your bedside table begins to rattle about, as if it has a will of its own. You become aware of a strange roaring sound outside, like a jet passing overhead. The rattling grows and strengthens. Suddenly, the earth moves, bucking like a wild animal. Your room heaves; glasses crash in the kitchen; paintings fall from the walls. What is it? What could make the normally stable earth move like this? Throughout human history there have been many attempts to explain earthquakes, from a disturbance created by growling demons who live beneath the earth to the movements of the giant tortoise who carries the world on his back. Over time, other ideas were proffered: perhaps these shakings were the result of great subterranean explosions, or the collapse of huge underground caverns. Earthquakes
An earthquake is one of the most destructive events in the natural world. More than three million people were killed in earthquakes in the 20th century alone. Although scientists are able to predict which regions are most likely to be hit, it is impossible to predict when a major quake will occur. Deadly quakes that struck El Salvador and India early in 2001 proved once again that major earthquakes are unpredictable and can kill thousands of people and obliterate homes, buildings and roads in a matter of seconds.

W hat kind of monster is this? It speeds across the sea as fast as a jet airplane. On reaching land, it can suck all the water out of a harbor. Then the creature may grow more than 100 feet tall (30 1/2 meters) and flatten whole villages. T A A T sunamis have killed more than 50,000 people in the past century. To save lives, scientists established the Pacific Tsunami Warning System, based in Hawaii, in the U.S.A. Its network of earthquake detectors and tide gauges detects quakes that may cause a tsunami.
