EARTHQUAKES Contents
Earthquakes are a natural hazard. These pages look at the causes of earthquakes and tsunami, how they are detected and measured, and the ways in which they might be predicted. The 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan is examined as a case study, and there are several eyewitness accounts of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake in California, USA. Intended Audience
The material is aimed mostly at students up to the United Kingdom GCSE Level ( Age 16 ) but much of the language is within the comprehension of younger students.

M ost people know that Earth is moving around the Sun and that it is constantly spinning. But did you know that the continents and oceans are moving across the surface of the planet? Volcanoes and earthquakes as well as mountain ranges and islands all are results of this movement.
Less than 100 years ago, many scientists thought the continents always had been the same shape and in the same place. A few scientists noted that the eastern coastline of South America and the western coastline of Africa looked as if they could fit together. Some also noted that, with a little imagination, all the continents could be joined together like giant puzzle pieces to create one large continent surrounded by one huge ocean.
Imagine the continents as giant puzzle pieces. When the pieces are placed in this arrangement you can see how well their coastlines fit together.

Shake With The Quake
Story Rumble Tumble Story are the shaking, rolling or sudden shock of the earth’s surface. Earthquakes happen along "fault lines" in the earth’s crust. Earthquakes can be felt over large areas although they usually last less than one minute. Earthquakes cannot be predicted although scientists are working on it! Most of the time, you will notice an earthquake by the gentle shaking of the ground. You may notice hanging plants swaying or objects wobbling on shelves. Sometimes you may hear a low rumbling noise or feel a sharp jolt. A survivor of the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco said the sensation was like riding a bicycle down a long flight of stairs. Earthquakes are sometimes called temblors, quakes, shakers or seismic activity. The most important thing to remember during an earthquake is to DROP, COVER and HOLD ON. So remember to DROP to the floor and get under something for COVER and HOLD ON during the shaking.

How Earthquakes Work
by Tom Harris
Table of Contents Introduction to How Earthquakes Work Shaking Ground Sliding Plates Faults Making Waves Pinpointing the Earthquake's Origin Rating Magnitude and Intensity Dealing with Earthquakes Lots More Information Shop or Compare Prices An earthquake is one of the most terrifying phenomena that nature can dish up. We generally think of the ground we stand on as "rock-solid" and completely stable. An earthquake can shatter that perception instantly, and often with extreme violence. Up until relatively recently, scientists only had unsubstantiated guesses as to what actually caused earthquakes. Even today there is still a certain amount of mystery surrounding them, but scientists have a much clearer understanding. Earth: All Stressed Out by Daniel Pendick To experience the drama of plate tectonics the jostling of the giant plates that carry continents and oceans try this experiment: Sit in a comfortable chair, hold your hand out, and watch your fingernails grow. That's about the average speed of a tectonic plate. But wait around long enough, and even the tortoise crawl of plate tectonics will have dramatic and deadly consequences. Though plate tectonics is a global phenomenon and virtually invisible to us in our daily lives, it introduces enormous stresses in the crust where we live. From time to time, stressed-out crust releases the stress in sudden fits: earthquakes.
More frequently than time to time, actually. If you imagine the Earth as a giant bell, it's ringing with earthquakes every second of the day from the many imperceptible clinks of microquakes to the deafening gong of very occasional but "great" earthquakes (those of magnitude 8.0 or greater). The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that several million temblors, most undetectable, happen every day. The great earthquake of 1906 devastated San Francisco, killing 700.
