Discover Earth: Earth as a System - Discover Earth classroom materials were developed during a series of teacher workshops sponsored by NASA and implemented by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies in collaboration with the Department of Meteorology, University of Maryland, College Park, and the Earth and Mineral Sciences Environmental Institute, The Pennsylvania State University. This module examines the Earth system and includes: Key Concepts and Terms; Resources; Background for Teachers; and Classroom Investigations. Recommended level: Grades 9-12. approach to expand knowledge of the Earth system and prepare master teachers through classroom study, science research, and collegial exchange. IGES conducted the 1998 Discover Earth Workshop July 24-August 3, at Falmouth Academy and adjacent Woods Hole, Massachusetts. (Added: 23-May-1999 Hits: 1724) [Spider search] [grade levels: 9-12]
    Educator Resource Center
    - The Educator Resource Center at the Goddard Space Flight Center serves educators in the eleven northeastern states (Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont) and the District of Columbia. Located at the Goddard Visitor Center, the Educator Resource Center is a place where educators can come and use NASA resources to develop their aerospace education programs. Here educators research, gather ideas and duplicate audiovisual materials. Materials available at the resource laboratory reflect NASA's research and technology development and relate to such curricula areas as astronomy, Earth science, aeronautics, mathematics, physical science and life science. Teachers in disciplines other than science and mathematics are encouraged to explore ways in which aerospace materials may be incorporated into their classroom lessons.

74. LESSON PLANS
science lesson plans. The purpose of all science instruction is to help children in physical science, chemistry, astronomy, geology and earth science.
http://www.mtsu.edu/~pdlee/public2_html/LPlan.html
SCIENCE LESSON PLANS
The purpose of all science instruction is to help children master the concepts of science and use these powerful ideas in their own lives to make informed decisions. These lesson plans are truly a guide to hands-on activities that will involve students in their own learning. The style is to make science classes student-centered and teacher-directed rather than a teacher-centerd class with a text as the principal resource. Most of these activities confront naive student ideas about how science works. By making sound experiences the basis for student understanding, the teacher will be providing the best basis for true learning and knowledge. The lesson plans which are available are the product of 200 students in the senior science education class at MTSU. The course is entitled Experimental Physical Science and is taught by science education faculty in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Department of Chemistry. Faculty members are Dr. Paul D. Lee and Dr. Ellen Verdel. This course is required of all elementary education majors for certification, K-8. The topical coverage is a CONCEPTUAL development of the themes in physical science, chemistry, astronomy, geology and earth science. Students in this class spend an entire semester performing hands-on activities that are appropriate for elementary-aged students. Based on concepts which are taught in the class, students have prepared 10 lesson plans each according to a prescribed format. Included is a clear statement of the concepts in the activity, the measurable objectives that the student should accomplish, a set, an instruction block, and closure, assessment and extension activities. Unless otherwise noted the lesson plans have been adapted from class notes and experiences.

Students are introduced to the nature of earthquakes and volcanoes. Students learn about the effects of earthquakes from eyewitnesses to the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906 Lesson: The Seasons
Demonstrate that seasons exist because of the tilt of the earth and its impact on the intensity of the sunlight at a given location. ERIC : Erosion
Appropriate for grades K-4. The following activities will demonstrate to students various types of erosion. The purpose of these activities is to increase students awareness to the point where they can make intelligent decisions on proper land use. WNet : The Dynamic Earth
Gr.3-8. Students are introduced to the nature of earthquakes and volcanoes. Students learn about the effects of earthquakes from eyewitnesses to the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906 (pictured below). They learn about how earthquake intensity is measured, where earthquakes occur (by studying real-time data), and what global patterns exist. They will then compare earthquake patterns to volcano patterns.
