The K-4 Earth Science curriculum is divided into four modules based on topic: Biomes; Weather, Seasons, and Climate; Remote Sensing; and Earth System. Each module contains an overview section, online and hands-on activities, and an Earth action story with small problems for students to address. "User Notes," accessible from any module, contain strategies on implementing this curriculum. In addition, the curriculum has a problem-based learning challenge that ties all of the modules together.

As earth science instructors, we are encouraged to make subject matter more exciting and understandable, particularly for those with little or no background in science (Rutherford and Ahlgren, 1991; Budiansky, 2001). There have been many attempts to achieve this goal including the use of active learning techniques (Reynolds and Peacock, 1998), cooperative groups (Hodder, 2001), various assessment techniques (Kirchner and Corbett, 1992), and the use of in-class demonstrations. Another way to stimulate an interest in earth science is to take advantage of students' familiarity with food. Why use edible earth science? Cognitive theorists recognize that in order for learning to occur students need to create new knowledge based on their observations, manipulations, and reflections (Martin, 2000). This theory of learning is called "constructivism." Knowledge is "constructed" when the new concepts being learned are both personally relevant and meaningful to students. Food, which students consume daily, can serve as a reality based analogy to better understand many of the unfamiliar, abstract concepts taught in earth science classes.

She also admits to rushing in "where wiser folk fear to tread." The premise of the book, and Landalf's aim, is to help students (at least 8-to 12-year-olds) learn about the mechanics of our home planet by interpreting earth science through dance movements.
