The idea was to persuade President Kennedy to give visibility to this issue by going on a national conservation tour. I flew to Washington to discuss the proposal with Attorney General Robert Kennedy, who liked the idea. So did the President. The President began his five-day, eleven-state conservation tour in September 1963. For many reasons the tour did not succeed in putting the issue onto the national political agenda. However, it was the germ of the idea that ultimately flowered into Earth Day. I continued to speak on environmental issues to a variety of audiences in some twenty-five states. All across the country, evidence of environmental degradation was appearing everywhere, and everyone noticed except the political establishment. The environmental issue simply was not to be found on the nation's political agenda. The people were concerned, but the politicians were not.

An environment without ugliness, without ghettos, without discrimination, without hunger, without poverty, without war." The words of then Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson during the first Earth Day 26 years ago are ones that could be heard at any Earth Day gathering today. Nelson felt strongly about preserving the environment and thought environmental issues such as overpopulation, scarce resources and pollution should be higher political and social priorities. But not being a radical, he did not like the confrontations and violence that marked protests against the Vietnam War and sought a more civil and educational way to draw people's attention to environmental concerns. The result was a day of "teach-ins" devoted to lectures, rallies, petitions and peace on April 22, 1970. A sudden media frenzy and genuine concern for the environment got the country's attention, and around 20 million Americans took part in the events. It became the largest rally of the '60s and '70s era of big demonstrations. Some angry students performed guerrilla theater wearing gas masks, burying cars and pouring oil in the reflecting pool at the Standard Oil Building in San Fransisco. But, most collected tons of litter along roadsides and streams, attended teach-ins at 1,500 colleges and 10,000 schools, and politely listened to speeches by environmental leaders like Nelson.

Gaylord Anton Nelson Father of Earth Day There was a special adventure to being a young boy in northwestern Wisconsin. There was the adventure of exploring a deep green pine forest, crunching noisily through the crisp leaves and pine needles on a sharp fall day, or taking a cool drink from a fast running trout stream or a hidden lake. Gaylord Nelson Gaylord Nelson was born in Clear Lake, Wisconsin in 1916. His experiences as a boy growing up in northern Wisconsin helped shape his life-long interest in the environment. Clear Lake offered him the chance to fish, swim, ice skate and explore. His day-to-day outdoor adventures made him curious about how nature works. He tells the story of how, at an early age, he and a friend conducted an experiment. When turtles migrated to a local pond for spring egg-laying, they picked up one of the traveling turtles and placed her in the opposite direction or put her behind a tree to see which way she would go. Without fail, she would turn herself back towards the pond and continue her journey. This interest in nature stayed with him when he left Clear Lake. Nelson received a B.A. degree from San Jose State College in San Jose, California. He returned to his native Wisconsin to attend law school, graduating in 1942. After graduation, he served in the United States Army for 4 years during WWII. He returned to Madison after the war, set up a law practice, and married Carrie Lee Dotson.

He was 89. Nelson died of cardiovascular failure at his home in the Washington suburb of Kensington, Md., said Bill Christofferson, his biographer and family spokesman. A conservationist years before it was fashionable, Nelson was recognized as one of the world's foremost environmental leaders. The former governor and senator started Earth Day in 1970, when an estimated 20 million people participated. April 22 is still celebrated today by planting trees, cleaning up trash and lobbying for a clean environment. In the Senate, Nelson had a reputation for cocktail party stunts, like ripping up a Milwaukee phone book (there was a trick to it) or doing one-arm push-ups. Instead of marching in protest, though, a group of students has spent hours upon hours researching "green" building design, meeting with campus administrators and developing ways to raise ecological awareness among fellow students. Last July, the UC Regents, the governing board of all nine UC schools, adopted a systemwide policy calling for "green" buildings and "clean" energy, with a goal of reducing energy consumption by at least 10 percent by 2014. "It’s like riding a wave," said senior Marcia Winslade, 24, who as co-chair of the 3-year-old Student Environmental Center lobbied hard for the policy — and at the expense of activities that typically consume the time of students, like surfing. "We happened to be in the right place at the right time," Winslade said.
