Earth Day
Earth Day is celebrated every year on the same day, April 22. Proposed in 1969 by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, Earth Day is an opportunity for citizens to demonstrate their commitment to improving environmental quality. Twenty million Americans participated in the first Earth Day in April 1970 , expressing their support for issues such as resource conservation and environmental quality. During the next decade, legislation such as the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts strengthened federal regulation and protection of the environment. An understanding of the effect that individuals have on their surroundings is vital to environmental literacy. Earth Day is a great occasion to learn more about current environmental issues, participate in local environmental activities , or make a small change around the house . For more on Earth Day, visit these websites: National Environmental Education Week
EPA: Earth Day

This page from the US Environmental Protection agency explains how people can celebrate Earth Day at home in the classroom , and in the community . The EPA also offers articles describing the history of Earth Day and a downloadable Earth Day Coloring and Activity Book for younger students.

For modern Pagans, Earth Day is everyday. As practitioners of nature-based spirituality, NeoPagans are committed to protecting our beloved Mother Earth. As Pagan parents, we have a responsibility to raise environmentally conscious children so that they can continue working towards a healthy planet for the generations to come. The best long-term protection of the environment is to raise kids who will automatically take care of it. Many of the lessons are unspoken. Trying to teach children the importance of recycling is futile if you don’t recycle. Telling them water conservation is important while you let the hot water run continuously for 20 minutes while you do the dishes is pointless. Environmental conservation is not a “do as I say, not as I do” issue. The best way to teach them is through our living model.

Earth Day and the Rise of Environmental Consciousness
Earthrise as seen from Moon orbit, December 24, 1968. (NASA photo) By Tim Brown
Washington File Staff Writer Earth Day, April 22, is the annual celebration of the environment and a time to assess the work still needed to protect the natural gifts of our planet. Earth Day has no central organizing force behind it though several nongovernmental organizations work to keep track of the thousands of local events in schools and parks that mark the day. Earth Day is observed around the world, although nowhere is it a national holiday. In the United States, it affirms that environmental awareness is part of the country's consciousness and that the idea of protecting the environment - once the province of a few conservationists - has moved from the extreme to the mainstream of American thought.

Jim Peterson of Auburndale Elementary School The students at Auburndale Elementary School, in Auburndale, Wisconsin, were presented with a challenge in the fall of 2002. The nearby Mead Wildlife Area, a 22,000 acre state-run facility, was planning on building an environmental education center to serve schools from all around the area. The state was willing to put up half the money, but the rest had to be raised from private funds. The teachers challenged the students to raise $1,000 toward this goal. Students started with a "Coins for Mead" campaign, collecting change in each classroom. The sixth grade classes chipped in by painting faces for Homecoming, charging 25 to 50 cents per face. Within a month the students had surpassed the original goal and we set our sites higher, with a new goal of $2,500. There were candy sales, bird-feeder sales, a carnival, a garage sale, and many other activities. On Earth Day, the students will present a check to the project manager for almost $3,000! Starting next year our students will be able to visit the center and will be among the first students to utilize this facility which will be providing lessons in environmental responsibility for many years to come.

[EPA Journal - January/February 1990] In the waning months of the 1960s, environmental problems were proliferating like a many-headed hydra, a monster no one could understand let alone tame or slay. Rampant air pollution was linked to disease and death in New York, Los Angeles, and elsewhere as noxious fumes, spewed out by cars and factories, made city life less and less bearable. In the wake of Rachel Carson's 1962 best-seller, Silent Spring , there was widespread concern over large-scale use of pesticides, often near densely populated communities. In addition, huge fish kills were reported on the Great Lakes, and the media carried the news that Lake Erie, one of America's largest bodies of fresh water, was in its death throes. Ohio had another jolt when Cleveland's Cuyahoga River, an artery inundated with oil and toxic chemicals, burst into flames by spontaneous combustion. In a response commensurate with the problem, an estimated 20 million Americans gathered together on April 22, 1970, to participate in a spectacularly well-publicized environmental demonstration known as "Earth Day." The rallies, teach-ins, speeches, and publicity gambits almost all went smoothly, amid a heady and triumphant atmosphere that was further enhanced by perfect spring weather. But the months leading up to Earth Day had been frantic, and the success of the event had been unpredictable up to the very last moment.

No matter what your cultural heritage, religious affiliation or political beliefs, Earth Day is an event we can all celebrate together as occupants of planet earth. This year, on April 22, folks around the nation will join together to celebrate a day designed to raise environmental concerns to the forefront of our national conscience. It has become a day of education and a chance to teach our children about environmental issues as well as how to be good caretakers and stewards of the earth's resources. A History of Earth Day
Before you start your celebrations, you may want to share with your children something about its history. In the 1960s, as a generation of college students refused to blindly accept the morals and traditions set forth by the previous generation, the consequences of years of environmental abuses became evident. Pollution scored the skies of our major cities, plants and animals were becoming extinct in unheard of numbers and our natural resources like oil and timber were dwindling. Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin was troubled by the fact that in spite of these concerns, the state of our environment was a political non-issue. After Nelson spoke to Attorney General Robert Kennedy, President Kennedy decided to go on a five-day national conservation tour. Though the tour didn't have the impact that Nelson had planned, it was the seed that eventually grew to become Earth Day.
