Learning About Immigration Through Oral History
Barbara Wysocki and Frances Jacobson The primary goal of this activity is to give students the genuine experience of oral history in order to appreciate the process of historiography. We identified immigrants in our community who reflect the ethnic diversity of our student body, enabling students to compare and contrast the stories of these contemporary immigrants with those researched in the thirties reflected in American Life Histories, 1936-1940 and other American Memory collections. Students engage in visual and information literacy exercises to gain an understanding of how to identify and interpret primary historical sources. Further background on the project and its context in our eighth grade history course can be obtained by reading this letter to parents. As designed, this project is almost a year-long experience. However, individual components can be adapted as standalone units, dropped altogether, or expanded to suit local needs. Why oral history?

Child Labor in America
Joyce Kasman Valenza and Carl Atkinson Children have always worked, often exploited and under less than healthy conditions. Industrialization, the Great Depression and the vast influx of poor immigrants in the 19th and 20th centuries, made it easy to justify the work of young children. To gain a true understanding of child labor, both as an historical and social issue, students should examine the worlds of real working children. This unit asks students to critically examine, respond to and report on photographs as historical evidence. Students will discover the work of reformer/photographer Lewis Hine, whose photographs give the issue of child labor a dramatic personal relevance and illustrate the impact of photojournalism in the course of American history. Overview Procedure Evaluation and Extension
Overview
Objectives Students will:
  • develop an understanding of the importance of historical inquiry;
  • recognize the factors which contributed to the Industrial Revolution in the United States;
  • evaluate primary source materials as artifacts for greater understanding of the past;

Using familiar childhood stories, students will work together to create a poem that is “found” in the language presented in the picture books they read. Children will look in texts for writing that inspires them—looking for favorite words, phrases, and sentences. Working together, students will combine their words and phrases to create a class poem. When complete, the new piece will be shared as performance poetry. K-2

    Home Education Lesson Plans Dear Educators, We are pleased to share with you the lesson plan packet for Historic Jamestowne. As you know, the important story of Jamestown is part of the history of Virginia and ultimately the United States. It is important to understand the early stories of Jamestown, and to include the most current research brought about through the work of the APVA-Preservation Virginia and their archaeology project, Jamestown Rediscovery. Included here are several lesson plans that we hope will share our project with you and help add a new dimension to your classroom resources. Each lesson plan has been designed for a specific grade or two, but in the hands of a good teacher, any of these lesson plans can be adjusted for other grades to use. Archaeology is a fascinating tool to use with your students, and we hope we included enough background information for you to feel comfortable using these lesson plans. We have included a short power point "Archaeology 101" for teachers to use. Have your students experience some archaeological thinking with our interactive modules designed for Jamestown Rediscovery by clicking here: Interactive Exercises . You can also use the second short PowerPoint presentation, "The Archaeology of James Fort," included here to introduce your students to Jamestown Rediscovery. It will serve as a preliminary look before visiting us or will help in the classroom if you can not visit us at Historic Jamestowne.
