Home upcoming events updated 17 Aug 2005 volunteering Abt me for Parents local service providers local disability organisations articles for Professionals career in Sped professional associations local research updated : 17 Aug 2005 Special Education in Singapore The following excerpt is taken from the National Council of Social Services (NCSS) website SPECIAL EDUCATION encompasses a range of specialised teaching programmes in special education (SPED) schools which cater to children with autism, or intellectual, sensory, physical or multiple disabilities. Depending on the degree of the disability, some of these children may still be able to cope with parts of the mainstream school curriculum with some support, while others may benefit more from special curricula taught by suitably- qualified teachers. SPED schools are operated by voluntary welfare organisations (VWOs), with the support of the Ministry of Education and the National Council of Social Service. The aim of all SPED schools is to develop each child's capacity to its fullest potential, with the long-term objective of enhancing his prospects of integration into mainstream society. The education curriculum is supplemented with rehabilitative and therapy services which provide for the child's physiological and psychological well-being as well as all-round development.

Successfully Homeschooling Children with Special Needs

If you are a parent of a child with special needs and considering homeschooling, you undoubtedly have many questions and concerns. You’re not alone, but you probably know more about homeschooling than you realize. For example, you’ve spent the first five years of your child’s life as his most important "teacher." In addition, if your child has been in public school, you’ve probably spent many evenings and weekends helping your child do homework. Guess what? You’ve been homeschooling.
My husband, Clint, and I have "been there—done that," and now we’re on our tenth year of homeschooling. Our sons Cj (22) and Shane (15) have been diagnosed with attention differences, and had we left them in public school, it is my opinion they would have inherited more labels as well.
Has homeschooling been hard? Sometimes. Interesting? Who said living with children with special needs is boring? Can it be done? Yes! Homeschooling isn’t a cure, and it is easier for some families than for others. However, homeschooling has rapidly become a respected alternative, especially for those children with special needs who are being pushed out of public schools.
It's not my place to diagnose, label, or tell you how to homeschool your child with special needs. And the issues of medication and counseling belong within the scope of each family’s decision-making process. However, with the one-on-one learning that parents provide in a homeschool environment, children with special needs can soar.

These changes have been embraced by many professionals and researchers, but viewed with considerable anxiety by others, including some professional organizations and practitioners involved in LD. At the same time, a recent national survey found that 54% of parents and 72% of teachers felt that current identification methods for LD took too long to identify students in need and to provide intervention (National Center for Learning Disabilities, 2002). Few teachers endorsed the view that current methods for identifying LD were effective and most (84%) felt that improvements could be made. Parents with a student who had been identified with LD were especially negative about the current system. This survey implies that those who want to preserve the current system are not listening carefully to parents and teachers.

PhonicsTutor®: The ultimate interactive phonics tutorial software!
Phonics Software
The PhonicsTutor method of instruction teaches students the common sounds for an extended set of Orton-Gillingham phonograms with spelling rules. Beginning with single-letter phonograms and single-syllable words and progressing to multi-letter phonograms and multi-syllable words, PhonicsTutor allows students to gain phonemic awareness without the frustration of memorizing a large set of phonograms and associated spelling rules before reading words and sentences. By grouping words together that have a common spelling pattern and similar pronunciation, students can easily understand which phonogram says which phoneme. The phonics lesson plans in PhonicsTutor include presentation and investigation of the words, word analysis, word pronunciation, and a spelling test. Most lessons end with dictation of sentences. PhonicsTutor is easy enough to use by a 4-year old with supervision and is self-teaching for children ages 6 and older.
  • PhonicsTutor® Frequent Words Those familiar with or using an Orton-Gillingham phonics programs will be delighted with PhonicsTutor Frequent Words. It focuses on spelling and the rules of spelling at the very beginning. It is fast paced and the right choice for most children over the age of 7.

Welcome The Michigan Dyslexia Insti tute: T he Michigan Dyslexia Institute, Inc. (MDI) is a nonprofit organization serving children and adults with dyslexia. We envision a new world for children and adults with dyslexia: a world in which they feel good about themselves and look forward to the future with hope and confidence; a world in which they receive the kind of instruction they need, in a nurturing environment; a world in which they are understood and encouraged to develop their potential; and a world in which they can participate fully in the work place and in their communities. MDI is committed to bringing about this new world. Estimates of the number of persons with dyslexia in the United States range from under two percent to over ten percent of the population. While much research has been done, thousands of articles have been written and successful teaching strategies have been in use for over 60 years, ignorance continues to be the number one enemy of dyslexia. In response, MDI has presented hundreds of public awareness programs throughout the state on what dyslexia is and what can be done about it. For further information call Central Office at 517-485-4000 and free information is provided. A newsletter

This is a site on learning disabilities. It consists of information and articles on deficits in reading, language and math.
Dys means deficit , and is used in words like dyslexia (reading deficit), dysphasia (language deficit) and dyscalculia (math ability deficit).
Living with deficits of the kind this site talks about means living with a learning handicap. UN's Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities read:
"States should recognize the principle of equal primary, secondary and tertiary educational opportunities for children, youth and adults with disabilities, in integrated settings. They should ensure that the education of persons with disabilities is an integral part of the educational system."
If we are to fullfill these requirements, that most countries have ratified, we have to change our ways of teaching children with these kinds of disabilities, in order to offer them the same possibilities in regard to education and fullfilling adult lives as non-disabled children have.
Use the links at the top of the page to retrieve information on the different learning disabilities.

Dyslexia is a difficulty in learning to read despite traditional instruction, average intelligence, and an adequate opportunity to learn. It is an impairment in the brain's ability to translate images received from the eyes or ears into understandable language. Dyslexia does not result from vision or hearing problems. It is not due to mental retardation, brain damage , or a lack of intelligence. Dyslexia can go undetected in the early grades of schooling. The child can become frustrated by the difficulty in learning to read, and other problems can arise that disguise dyslexia. The child may show signs of depression and low self esteem. Behavior problems at home as well as at school are frequently seen. The child may become unmotivated and develop a dislike for school. The child's success in school may be jeopardized if the problem remains untreated. What causes dyslexia?
