The Diagnostic Center for Dyslexia and Related Disorders is administered by SMU’s Learning Therapy program, which is a graduate certification program that prepares individuals for professional employment as dyslexia therapists and educational specialists. Both the Diagnostic Center and the Learning Therapy program are important components of SMU's Center for Teacher Education..
Center Objectives
The Diagnostic Center was established in response to a community need for services that evaluate individuals for learning disorders related to reading acquisition and comprehension. Dyslexia is involved in most disorders of this type, which include developmental spelling disability, developmental auditory imperception, dysgraphia, and dysphasia. The Center is dedicated to providing comprehensive evaluative services and appropriate medical, psychological, and educational referrals and recommendations to children, adolescents, and adults who are at risk for dyslexia.
Dyslexia
According to the International Dyslexia Association (2002), dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and a reluctance to read, both of which can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.

No Child Left Behind and IDEA:
Task Force Questions Conflicting Provisions
25 February 2005 A bipartisan panel of state lawmakers have concluded that the No Child Left Behind Act [NCLB] conflicts with provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Law [IDEA] which required individualized education plans for students with disabilities. Under NCLB, a disabled eighth grader capable of working at a sixth grade level must take examinations for eighth graders. The report said the requirement of grade level testing contradicted the mandate of IDEA that students be taught according to ability. "Ignoring the contradictions between IDEA and No Child Left Behind is one of the act's worst weakness," said Utah State Representative Kory Holdaway, a member of the committee and a special education teacher. The task force also found that the requirements of NCLB requiring that 90% of students with disabilities achieve grade level proficiency by the school year 2013-2014 was not only unrealistic, but also impossible in practice. By definition, students in special education are generally functioning below grade level; when those students reach grade level standards, they generally do not qualify for further special education services and are thus not part of the subgroup being tested. The task force recommendations include:
  • Give IDEA primacy over NCLB in cases of conflict.

Article Reviews— Dyslexia There is a great deal of controversy about the best approach to teaching students with dyslexia. Should they be mainstreamed or placed in special education? Should they be taught differently than other students? These articles may contain information that is vital to these questions. You can contact me at lhartman@stmartin.edu Home Resume Kids' Corner ... Teachers K-6 Title: Dyslexia: teaching to strengths and weaknesses. Author: Terezinha Nunes Source: Literacy Today, March 2002, pp 20-21. Summary: A team of psychologists and one educator designed a study to explore how using two different techniques for teaching reading and spelling to dyslexic students would affect the students’ achievement in these subjects. Past studies have found that dyslexic students experienced no more difficulty with developing logical progressions from words than other students. An example of this would be the relationship between the word magic and magician. The relationship between these two words is understood by dyslexic students at the same level as students who are not dyslexic. The study focused on comparing the achievement of students that were taught using these morphological concepts to that of students who were taught using phonological conditional rules such as “i” before “e” except after “c.”

My name is Bob Wieselman, President of BrightEye Technology. Many years ago a Learning Disability instructor came to me with a problem. She said she just didn't have time to read individually to all of her students. She wanted me to design a device that could scan words and text, then clearly read them out loud.
The rest as they say is history. Our systems are designed to help students learn on their own. Empowering people with the aid of low cost, easy to use technology is our #1 goal.

Dyscalculic learners may have difficulty understanding simple number concepts, lack an intuitive grasp of numbers, and have problems learning number facts and procedures.
