Fact Sheets Being an Advocate for your School-Aged Child Your child has the right to a free and appropriate public school education. Getting involved in his or her education is among the most important things you can do as your child's advocate. As you'll see below, you have a right to be a part of every decision regarding your child's education, including the process of finding out if your child needs special services. You know your child best, and your input should be considered at every opportunity. In order to make sure that your child with learning disabilities gets the help he or she needs throughout his or her school career, you should familiarize yourself with the rights you have as your child's advocate. These rights are federally mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Your child's rights in determining eligibility for special education and related services:
  • You have the right to request that your child be evaluated to determine if he or she is eligible for special education and related services. This evaluation is more than just a single test. The school must gather information from you, your child's teacher and others who would be helpful. An assessment of your child must then be conducted in all the areas that may be affected by the suspected disability

Frequently Asked Questions About Education Options for a Dyslexic Child
Q: How can I get help for my child's reading problems?
A: First step, contact the school and ask for a meeting of the educational management team. This team should review current functioning of your child through school records and interviews of staff. This would be the time to review the possibility of additional assessments. Students need to qualify for special education services. Please see www.schwablearning.org or www.ncld.org for more information. Q: What do I do if the school says my child has attentional issues?
A: Through an educational meeting at the school, you can determine if your child qualifies for a 504 plan. The ADHD/ADD must be so severe that it substantially limits a major activity (learning). Q: What does an assessment involve?
A: Typically a record review of students educational and health records, student observation/interviews, and formal testing looks at one or more of the following skills: reading decoding, reading comprehension, math calculation and reasoning, written language, oral language, auditory/visual memory, emotional development, and ability levels. Please see http://ericae.net for more details. Q: What are a parent's rights when requesting educational services for their child?

  • Awesome Talking Library (Awesome Library)
Converts online text into spoken words through the Awesome Talkster program. Awesome Talkster has one of the clearest synthesized voices on the Web.
Converting online text into speech has many uses. For example, Talkster can speak online stories or books to children while an adult supervises. The voice can be put in "Boy" or "Girl" mode to add a character with a bubble over his or her head. The bubble will show each word as it is spoken and the voice can be put on "slow" for your child to follow. Talkster can thereby assist your child in learning how to pronounce words while reading.
Talkster is also useful for adults. It can speak news articles to you in one open browser while you are searching for information in another browser window.

Directory Contact AISD Home Inside AISD ... Recommended Resources Dyslexia and 504 Services A Parent's Guide to Dyslexia: Questions and Answers What is dyslexia? Dyslexia is a disorder which makes it difficult for individuals of average or above average intelligence to read, write, and spell and sometimes to compute, organize, and comprehend material in their native language. It often runs in families and may be caused by naturally occurring brain differences. Many individuals learn to compensate for or practically overcome their weaknesses through proper teaching methods and practice. Back to Top How would I know if my child has dyslexia? The characteristics of dyslexia vary from person-to-person. Some children experience problems in many areas while some may have a difficulty in only one area. Many young children exhibit one or more of the following characteristics; however, persistent occurrences should alert teachers and parents to the possibility of dyslexia:
    • Problems in learning the names of the letters of the alphabet Difficulty in learning to read Difficulty in reading comprehension Difficulty in learning to write the alphabet correctly in sequence Reversal of letters or sequences of letters/numbers after age 8-9 Repeated erratic spelling errors Ability to learn to spell a "list" of words sufficiently to "pass" a weekly test, but may be unable to spell any of the words the next week
