Dyslexia, Learning Disabilities (LD) and Special Education
Definition
A learning disability is a generic term referring to difficulties in the acquisition and use of listening, speaking, reading, writing, reasoning or mathematical abilities. Dyslexia is a specific learning disability in the area of reading and writing. The term is derived from the Greek word "dys" (meaning poor or inadequate) and "lexis" (words or language). A person with this condition is someone with average or above average intelligence whose difficulty in reading, writing and/or spelling is not the result of emotional problems, lack of motivation, poor teaching, mental retardation, or vision/hearing deficits. Rather, it is neurologically-based and tends to run in families. People with this condition often reverse or mis-sequence letters within words when reading or writing (b/d; brid/bird; left/felt). They may also have difficulty with one or more of the following:

By: Bonnie Terry, M. Ed., Educational Therapist, Learning Disabilities Specialist. There are many components to learning. From the learning styles model designed by Dr. Rita Dunn and Dr. Kenneth Dunn there are five sets of stimuli: environmental, emotional, sociological, physical, and psychological. Within those stimuli there are 21 different elements involved that are either simultaneous or successive in the processing of information. One of the 21 elements addressed by them is within the physical stimulus. It is the perceptual area.

By Mary K. Fitzsimmons. How to teach reading has been the subject of much debate over the years. One reason may be because, to the reading public, reading seems to be a fairly easy and natural thing to do. However, this apparent ease masks the very real and complex processes involved in the act of reading.

Assessment. Gail D. Chermak, Ph.D. Given the heterogeneous nature of central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) and the range of listening and learning deficits that often coexist with CAPD, comprehensive evaluation requires a multidisciplinary team approach. CAPD is diagnosed by the audiologist on the basis of an extensive audiologic evaluation. Additional evaluation of language development, speech understanding and learning is necessary, however, to identify associated (co-morbid) conditions, as well as clarify the functional impact of CAPD. Speech-language pathologists, psychologists and educators contribute to this more comprehensive assessment. Speech-language and psychoeducational assessment of children with CAPD is beyond the scope of this article. Rather, a minimum test battery for diagnosing CAPD is outlined below.

    Dyslexia
What it is and what it isn't jump to Causes jump to strategies for dyslexic students Dyslexia is probably the most common LD term which the general public hears. Unfortunately, there is often a great deal of confusion and misinformation surrounding this term. The word "dyslexia" simply means difficulty understanding written words. In essence, it just means "reading difficulty". And specifically, it means a learning disability which affects reading. The confusion comes when we start dealing with the term "dyslexia" as it relates to "special education services". There are very strict criteria (which can differ quite a bit from State to State) which determine if a student has a learning disability as it is defined by special education rules. When a student's reading difficulty is severe enough to meet this criteria, special education services are indicated. On the other hand, "dyslexia" has no clearly defined criteria. A student with any degree of reading difficulty may be considered "dyslexic" according to some educational specialists. This frequently occurs when a student receives an educational evaluation outside of the public school system. So, being labeled as "dyslexic" may or may not indicate the need for special education services. It should be noted that many learning disabled students experience reading difficulty and probably could be considered "dyslexic". However, the term is seldom used within public schools because of the lack of any strict or measurable criteria.
