DYSLEXIA AND RELATED DISORDERS GENERAL INTRODUCTION As part of the education reform legislation, a law regarding dyslexia and related disorders was passed during 1985. The law was felt to be necessary out of consideration for children who experience considerable difficulty in learning to read. As a follow up to this legislation (T.E.C. 21.924), the state Board of Education adopted specific Procedures Concerning Dyslexia in March 1990. DEFINITION OF DYSLEXIA AND RELATED DISORDERS Related disorders include disorders similar to or related to dyslexia such as developmental auditory imperceptions, dysphasia, specific developmental dyslexia, developmental dysgraphia, and developmental spelling disability. See Glossary) Many of these characteristics are found in young children with other specific learning disabilities or with speech and spoken language disorders. These characteristics may also be present in many young children during the course of their normal development. The International Dyslexia Association's definition of dyslexia is as follows: "Dyslexia is one of several distinct learning disabilities. It is a specific language-based disorder of constitutional origin characterized by difficulties in single-word decoding, usually reflecting insufficient phonological processing. These difficulties in single-word decoding are often unexpected in relation to age and other cognitive and academic abilities; they are not the result of generalized developmental disability or sensory impairment. Dyslexia is manifested by variable difficulty with different forms of language, often including, in addition to problems with reading, a conspicuous problem with acquiring proficiency in writing and spelling." (Working definition of dyslexia approved by the International Dyslexia Association Research Committee, April, 1994, in collaboration with individuals from the National Center for Learning Disabilities and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.)

Dr. Shaywitz gives case examples of dyslexia from 1676 to the present time. She examines the stress of trying to read for children and adults with dyslexia. She writes about the 2 million students who are receiving special help for reading problems in the United States. Dr. Shaywitz states that girls often go undiagnosed with their reading problems. Thinking that boys have more and more serious reading problems, professionals often do not recognize the reading difficulties of girls.

This site is named after the book Uniquely Gifted: Identifying and Meeting the Needs of the Twice-Exceptional Student , edited by Kiesa Kay. Twice-exceptional children (that is, intellectually gifted children with special needs such as AD/HD, learning disabilities, Asperger Syndrome, etc.) have a hard time of it in our education system - because their giftedness can mask their special needs and their special needs hide their giftedness, they are often labeled as "lazy", "unmotivated", "not trying". Many people don't even realize that a child can be both gifted and learning disabled; however, Linda Silverman, Ph.D., the director of the Gifted Development Center has found that fully 1/6 of the gifted children tested at the GDC have a learning difference of some type In addition to being special needs educational advisor for families with twice-exceptional children and Contributing Editor to the new publication 2e: Twice-Exceptional Newsletter , I am co-founder and co-listowner of the

Many of us supplement our diet with vitamins - vitamin A, vitamin C or a multivitamin. In the same way, we need to supplement our child's schooling with coping strategies. I'm talking about a modified homework plan, modified reading assignments, closed-caption viewing on TV sets, a Special-Ed tutor who can relate to your child, or just using past school experiences, as a dyslexic student, to better understand a child's frustrations. Strategies come in different formats and for different reasons. Each grade, teacher, course, semester pose new challenges. What worked well last semester might need modifying this semester. Flexibility is the name of the game. Overall, parents say they need most help for homework strategies, followed by technology tips, Learning Resource specialists and Special-Ed tutors. Let's look initially at interviews where parents are considering, a school for dyslexia or homeschooling as an alternative to traditional mainstream schooling. This usually happens with elementary-school parents. As you've seen from their stories, it takes courage, uncertainty and a lot of "agonizing" to move out of the mainstream. But, if long-term benefits are there, whatever the risk, these parents feel that going out of the mainstream is their optimum choice.

    Improving the Individualized Education Program
How one family is fighting for special ed changes
By Ky Henderson When Brad Wilk was in third grade, a school psychologist asked him what he would wish for if he had three wishes. After thinking a moment, Brad decided he had only two: to be able to read, and to be able to write. Brad had been diagnosed with dyslexia in first grade, and since then two years of special education had done little. As Brad entered fourth grade still unable to read or write beyond an early first-grade level, his self-confidence and self-worth were rapidly slipping away. As a classroom assistant, his mother, Jenny Wilk, saw it all. Brad's classmates ridiculed him, and his overworked teachers appeared unable to give Brad the kind of individual instruction he needed. "If school taught him anything through third grade, it taught him how to copy and cheat," says Wilk, who lives with her husband and five children in suburban Chicago. "The embarrassment he felt was awful, and he had to hide it because it would have been humiliating for his peers to know where he was functioning at. It broke my heart."

    SPECIAL EDUCATION
Two federal statutes dictate the parameters and rules for special educational services. Important in this paper, are the provisions of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Amendments of 1997. IDEA now mandates that Individual Education Programs (IEPs) consider whether the student would benefit from assistive technological (AT) devices and services. Assistive technology includes devices and services used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of a disabled child (LRP Publications 1997, 5A). In 1988, the Technology Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act, provided for federal assistance to states for development and implementation of consumer-friendly statewide programs offering technology-related assistance to persons of all ages with disabilities (NCES 1997, 380). This paper will assert the use of researched and proven technology to increase the quantity, quality, frequency, and effectiveness of needed individualized instruction for dyslexic students. This technology will improve the relevance and application of regular classroom instruction, and will be a ready tutor for each student needing additional help in any subject. At the same time, students will develop connections with others around the world, and become empowered by computer experiences directly applicable to home, work, and community. In Section 681 of IDEA, Congress reports that Federal support for technological research, development, educational media services and activities has resulted in major significant innovations and improvements in early intervention, services, and results for children and families with disabilities. Government will continue to stimulate the development of research, software, interactive learning tools, early intervention devices, and education to promote the integration of technology into the curricula in "timely and accessible formats," and to provide adequate training for parents, students, and teachers in technology use (LRP Publications 1997, 47A).
