Dyslexia Style Guide.
"Information is power" and is therefore key to empowering individuals to form a greater understanding of the world around them. The style in which this information is produced is key to facilitating comprehension for the reader. Presenting information in a format which makes it easily accessible is vital, if the information it contains is to be understood by everyone.
It is important to understand why and how to make changes in order to increase readability. This Guide aims to explain how dyslexic people read and thus process information differently and how some simple changes to the way information is presented to them can make all the difference.
1. The skill of reading and comprehension
Every individual has a different perception of what they see and reading is no exception. The shape and size of words can appear different to each reader. For some dyslexic readers there can be barriers to overcome.
People often talk about 'tuning in' to text and 'focussing' on what they are looking at. This describes concentrating on content as well as the simple decoding exercise that occurs when we read. For many people, reading becomes an automatic skill that requires little conscious effort. When decoding occurs unconsciously, the reader is able to concentrate on comprehension.
For some dyslexic readers decoding the words is not always an automatic or unconscious skill. Anyone with a history of reading difficulties may have to concentrate harder to interpret text and remember what they have read.

Regular Price $167.00. BUY NOW for $99.00. Click over and SAVE $68.00! Parents Ask, "How can I help my child improve their reading skills?" If a reader has to stop and consciously identify a word the reading flow is halted and reading comprehension is lost. A strong reader does not take the time to consciously think about the individual letters or words. A strong reader automatically recognizes letters and words. For successful comprehension, reading is a reaction not a thought process. Ideally the reader is free to think about what they are reading, not bogged down in the act of reading. Our Research-Based Reading Intervention Helps Children Build Reading Skills From Home . Our Skill Builder Module has proved effective in improving the reading skills of students who have fallen behind their peers in word identification ability. The Skill Builder Module provides practice on words that are sorted into grade levels. Practice consists of rapid naming of sets of words and the Skill Builder program then plots the results of a practice session in terms of the speed and accuracy with which a student named the words. After one set of words is mastered to automaticity, the program presents the student with another set of words, and practice continues.

Dysgraphia is not . . .
  • laziness not trying not caring sloppy writing general sloppiness careless writing visual-motor delay
Dysgraphia is defined as a difficulty in automatically remembering and mastering the sequence of muscle motor movements needed in writing letters or numbers. This difficulty is out of harmony with the person's intelligence, regular teaching instruction, and (in most cases) the use of the pencil in non-learning tasks. It is neurologically based and exists in varying degrees, ranging from mild to moderate. It can be diagnosed, and it can be overcome if appropriate remedial strategies are taught well and conscientiously carried out. An adequate remedial program generally works if applied on a daily basis. In many situations, it is relatively easy to plan appropriate compensations to be used as needed. Dysgraphia is an inefficiency which seldom exists in isolation without other symptoms of learning problems. While it may occasionally exist alone, it is most commonly related to learning problems involved within the sphere of written language. Difficulty in writing is often a major problem for students, especially as they progress into upper elementary and into secondary school. Rosa Hagan has stated

(A FREE OnLine Book) Developmental dyslexia is a condition related to poor reading. Children with dyslexia have difficulty learning to read due to one or more information processing problems such as visual perceptual or auditory perceptual deficits. Many but not all children with dyslexia have difficulty with reversals of numbers, letters or words. New research points the way to specific methods of instruction that can help anyone learn to read well no matter what the underlying problem may be. Following the links will provide interesting new information as well as extremely effective solutions for all types of reading problems including developmental dyslexia.

Dyslexia: What is it?
If you look up the word dyslexia in the dictionary, you’ll find that it is derived from the Greek word “dys” (meaning poor or inadequate) plus “lexis” (words or language). Perhaps you know someone with dyslexia. If so, you probably know one of the common problems they have is transposing letters or numbers. These problems can occur in listening, writing, reading, spelling or handwriting. In other words, dyslexic people process language poorly, but that doesn’t mean they aren't intelligent. Dyslexia is not related to low intelligence. Dyslexia is a unique mind set that is often gifted and productive, but learns differently than other minds. In fact some of the most brilliant minds of our time have been known to have dyslexia: Albert Einstein, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Winston Churchill, Benjamin Franklin, John F. Kennedy, Mozart and John Lennon to mention only a few. There are people with dyslexia in many types of highly respected careers such as: Walt Disney, Tom Cruise, Danny Glover, Cher, Magic Johnson

Mathematics and Dyslexia
Perspectives, Fall 1998
International Dyslexia Association
reprinted with permission
Not all individuals with dyslexia have problems with mathematics, but many do. There are those who have a good memory for sequences and can execute procedures in a "recipe" style, i.e., step-by-step. They are able to remember formulas, but may not understand why the formula makes sense. They prefer to do paper and pencil tasks and are attentive to the details, but do not see the big picture. Then, there are those who see the big picture and have insight into the patterns of mathematics, but are poor at computation and have problems with remembering step-by-step procedures. They also understand mathematical concepts and like to solve problems mentally and quickly, yet their answers may be inaccurate. These individuals may have difficulty in verbalizing and explaining their answers. Too frequently and too readily, individuals with dyslexia who have difficulty with mathematics are misdiagnosed as having dyscalculia - literally trouble with calculating, a neurologically based disability. True dyscalculia is rare (Steeves, 1983).
