In its most common and apparent form, it is a disability in which a person's reading and/or writing ability is significantly lower than that which would be predicted by his or her general level of intelligence . However, as has been discovered only in the last decade, individuals may read and write perfectly and still have dyslexia (see "characteristics" below). The term was coined in 1887. People are diagnosed as dyslexic when their reading problems cannot be explained by a lack of intellectual ability, inadequate instruction, or sensory problems such as poor eyesight. Because reading is a complex mental process, dyslexia has many potential causes. From a neurophysiological perspective, dyslexia can be diagnosed by close inspection of the morphology of the brain , usually upon autopsy . Dyslexia is also associated with phonological difficulties, such as

Teaching Methods Multi-sensory teaching methods Studies from the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development have shown that for children with difficulties learning to read, a multi-sensory teaching method is the most effective teaching method. This is especially crucial to teach a dyslexic child. But what does it mean? More Confidence building The majority of children with dyslexia have come to the conclusion that they are stupid! In any school in any week of the year a dyslexic child experiences a huge amount of failure. Why can't he read and spell? He must be dumb, thick, stupid. It's the conclusion that anyone would reach in similar circumstances, and it badly needs changing before any corrective teaching is going to be effective. Sarah hates reading aloud in class. She's never been a good reader, and even when she recognizes the words on the page, she seems to have trouble saying them correctly. School's never been her favorite place, anyway, because her teachers always complain about her writing and her spelling. She often gets discouraged, thinking that she's not as smart as other students. Fortunately, Sarah has discovered she has talents that others don't. She's great at dreaming up costume and scenery ideas in drama club, and she's one of the best artists in her school. Sometimes she wonders how she can do so well in some areas of her life and so poorly in others. What Sarah, her parents, and her teachers don't realize is that Sarah has dyslexia. What Is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia (pronounced: dis- lek -see-ah) is a type of learning disability . A person with a learning disability has trouble processing or understanding words or numbers. There are many different kinds of learning disabilities; dyslexia is the term used when people have difficulty learning to read, even though they are smart enough and are motivated to learn. The word dyslexia comes from two Greek words: dys , which means abnormal or impaired, and lexis which refers to language or words.

Stanbridge Earls is a small, independent, co-educational, day and boarding school for pupils aged 10 to 19.
The school has been a leader in the field of specific learning difficulties since 1963; this fits easily into our philosophy of developing every pupil's ability to the full. We are however, much more than just a school for special needs because every pupil wishing for a smaller, caring environment will do well here. Click here to read more about the school.
A complete national curriculum Special needs catered for A full range of facilities Extracurricular activities (ISI Inspector's report March 2000) For a school of our size, the range of academic subjects and recreational activities is remarkable. By any standards Stanbridge Earls is an unusual school. Because every pupil is important to us, no effort is spared to raise the expectations of all.

Welcome The Michigan Dyslexia Insti tute: T he Michigan Dyslexia Institute, Inc. (MDI) is a nonprofit organization serving children and adults with dyslexia. We envision a new world for children and adults with dyslexia: a world in which they feel good about themselves and look forward to the future with hope and confidence; a world in which they receive the kind of instruction they need, in a nurturing environment; a world in which they are understood and encouraged to develop their potential; and a world in which they can participate fully in the work place and in their communities. MDI is committed to bringing about this new world. Estimates of the number of persons with dyslexia in the United States range from under two percent to over ten percent of the population. While much research has been done, thousands of articles have been written and successful teaching strategies have been in use for over 60 years, ignorance continues to be the number one enemy of dyslexia. In response, MDI has presented hundreds of public awareness programs throughout the state on what dyslexia is and what can be done about it. For further information call Central Office at 517-485-4000 and free information is provided. A newsletter
