[September 21, 1998] You have a lot of great information on this website. Unfortunately, my dyslexic husband has a hard time reading so much. He can better read material that is ALL CAPITALS or in a simple font such as Helvetica and that has more spacing between the lines of text. Perhaps you could develop some basic information that is set in a format better accessible to dyslexics? Jean, E-mail September 24, 1998.

Information about how to indentify possible dyslexia in a pupil: The criteria most commonly used in assessment is the disparity (difference) between a pupil's intelligence and their actual achievement. If a pupil you teach appears to speak and listen normally, yet they are unable to read and spell, then there may be more to check out. Some of the well-known symptoms of dyslexia are:
  • confusion over the direction letters face (b/d, p/9, p/q);
  • difficulties with left and right;
  • difficulties with keeping organized;
  • difficulties with spelling
  • difficulties with directions (e.g. east and west);
  • missing out words when reading.
More information What causes dyslexia To be quite honest, nobody quite knows at the moment. There has been a real increase in the amount of information available through research, and a number of possibilities are beginning to emerge, but the waters are still fairly murky. The overall picture is that

Perspectives on Dyslexia
Dyslexia in Children: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments Reading and learning are the two things that determine the success of a child during his school career. First he learns to read. Then he reads to learn. Because the child with dyslexia battles to read, he is therefore also hampered in the learning situation. What are the symptoms and cause of dyslexia, and what can be done to help these children? By Benetta Strydom

Dyslexia: Is the Shoe Perhaps on the Wrong Foot?
Reading is the most important skill that a child must acquire at school, because one must learn to read to be able to read to learn. The implication of this is that the child who is a poor reader will usually also be a poor learner. Unfortunately poor reading skills, and therefore poor learning skills, have become a reality for an alarming number of people. Perhaps it has become time to put the shoe on the other foot… By Susan du Plessis

http://www.dys.dk/eng

This is a site on learning disabilities. It consists of information and articles on deficits in reading, language and math.
Dys means deficit , and is used in words like dyslexia (reading deficit), dysphasia (language deficit) and dyscalculia (math ability deficit).
Living with deficits of the kind this site talks about means living with a learning handicap. UN's Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities read:
"States should recognize the principle of equal primary, secondary and tertiary educational opportunities for children, youth and adults with disabilities, in integrated settings. They should ensure that the education of persons with disabilities is an integral part of the educational system."
If we are to fullfill these requirements, that most countries have ratified, we have to change our ways of teaching children with these kinds of disabilities, in order to offer them the same possibilities in regard to education and fullfilling adult lives as non-disabled children have.
Use the links at the top of the page to retrieve information on the different learning disabilities.
