DUTCH LITERATURE
DUTCH LITERATURE. The languages now known as Dutch and Flemish did not begin to take distinct shape till about the end of the 11th century. From a few existing fragmentstwo incantations from the 8th century, a version of the Psalms from the 9th century, and several chartersa supposed Old Dutch language has been recognized; but Dutch literature actually commences in the i3th century, as Middle Dutch, the creation of the first national movement in Brabant, Flanders, Holland and Zealand. Hitherto, as we have seen, the Middle Dutch language had placed itself at the service of the aristocratic and monastic orders, flattering the traditions of chivalry and of religion, but scarcely finding anything to say to the bulk of the population. With the close of the 13th century a change came over the face of Dutch literature. The Flemish towns began to prosper and to assert their commercial supremacy over the North Sea. Under such mild rulers as William II. and Floris V., Dort, Amsterdam, and other cities contrived to win such privileges as amounted almost to political independence, and with this liberty there arose a new sort of literary expression. The founder and creator of this original Dutch literature was Jacob van Maerlant Macriant. (q.v.). His Naturen Bloeme, written about 1263, It is now time to consider the growth of prose literature in the Low Countries. The oldest pieces of Dutch prose now in existence are charters of the towns of Flanders and Zealand, dated 1249, 1251 and 1254. A prose translation of the Old Testament was made about 1300, and there exists a Life of Jesus about the same date. Of the mystical preachers whose religious writings have reached us, the Brussels friar, Jan van Ruysbroec (1294 1381), is the most important. But the most interesting relics of medieval Dutch prose, as far as the formation of the language is concerned, are the popular romances in which the romantic stories of the trouvres and minstrels were translated for the benefit of the unlettered public into simple language. As in most European nations, the religious drama takes a prominent R ~

Special Dutch Literature
'The Twins' by Tessa de Loo The book tells the story of two twin elderly sisters that find each other after being separated at the age of six. Telling each other the stories of their lives, they bring the reader close to what life was like for them during those years of separation, strongly marked by the war between their countries, Germany and the Netherlands. Outside Europe, the Dutch and German cultures seem so similar that it is, for common people, difficult to differentiate between people from these countries, as even their languages sound alike. However, living in the Netherlands one easily recognizes that despite the affinity of these cultures there is still something irreconcilable between them, which is linked to the events that happened during World War II. They left such a collective impression that they have become source of inspiration for many Dutch authors and artists. De Loo%s story is a successful attempt to humanize WW II, showing the profound suffering on both sides of the lines from a personal point of view. More than the human losses and atrocities of the war, she exposes the conflicts of consciousness and personal dramas of everyday life and how they shaped the lives of the twins. The message is that ordinary people lived courageous times during the war, on both sides, but they did not know about each other. In the end this can be seen as a therapeutic conversation between the Dutch and German souls, to understand the origins of their love-hate relationship with the aim of healing their emotional wounds. De Loo confronts the two sisters in such a natural and refined manner that it becomes captivating for all audiences, even if the reader is not aware of the historic events. It is not difficult to understand why the book has become a best-seller in the Netherlands

H .chap H.M. van den Brink % On the water Reviewed by: Henry Ismail, from Jakarta, Indonesia, home to 15 million people and a river that is, he says, "so dirty that you'd have to be crazy to go rowing on it." Henry studies political science at Leiden University. Practice...practice...practice. That's all that matters to Anton, a teenager from a working-class family in Amsterdam. Ever since childhood, Anton has been in love with the river. He sees the river as a movement. When he was a little boy, Anton saw a racing row boat glide by on the water and he was amazed by how the boat could glide so smoothly on the water and how all the rowers in the boat acted as one. He dreamt of being one of them someday. That dream seemed to be too good to be true, however, because the sport of rowing belonged to upper class society. But sometimes miracles happen, and Anton was able to make his dream come true and joined a rowing club. Anton's partner, David, a Jewish middle-class boy, was appointed by Dr. Schneiderhahn, their German coach, who sometime disappears from time to time for unexplained business trips. "Don't you read the papers?" David asks, pointing out Anton's complete obliviousness to everything outside their small, intense world of training. For Anton, nothing exists in the world except training and rowing. His relation with David is merely rowing partner, not more than that.

Tilburg University Arts Research Theory and History of Literature ... Projects > Goedegebuure Education Research Countermovements in the secularisation of Dutch literature between 1980 en 2000 After the secularization which, analogous to developments in western culture as a whole, established itself in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Dutch literature, recently a countermovement can be noticed. In the works of several authors one sees a distinct religious and ethical reorientation. This turn will be analyzed within the context of the process of modernization, more specifically in terms of a supposed antinomy between literary modernism and postmodernism.
