Welcome to
Cooking Dutch! Cooking Dutch What does that mean? Cooking Dutch was formed by a group of women who have moved from America to The Netherlands (Holland). There are obviously lots of adjustments that an ex-patriate needs to make when moving to a new country. This group of women found that learning how to cook, and learning what foods, herbs, and baking supplies are available in The Netherlands was one of the biggest adjustments. This group shares recipes, cooking and baking hints, in addition to sharing our daily frustrations and happy discoveries while adjusting to our new life in a new country. Our membership now includes men and women from both The Netherlands and America. You do not need to be a member of Cooking Dutch to access

Dutch cooking A country so much characterized by its Calvinist heritage and the generally perfectly matching grey cloudy weather surely can't have a fancy cuisine, and it hasn't.
Superficially this is only illustrated by the traditional Dutch home cooked meal: potatoes, accompanied by a piece of meat and boiled vegetables. The whole lot of it preferably covered with heaps of gravy. Herbs and spices appear to be obsolete altogether, which makes the food pretty bland. However, times are changing. Partly due to the influx of citizens from former colonies, and the Mediterranean, partly due to the formation of the global village these traditional patterns are changing.
Nowadays the traditional Dutch meal is gradually being replaced by foods and spices from all over the world.
So, these days one can find African, Arabian, Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, Italian and Spanish food on the Dutch dinner tables. And if not, then certainly there will be restaurants serving these kinds of food within the vicinity. Contents Dairy products Breakfast Lunch Dinnertime ...

Still, it cannot be denied that Dutch citizens seem determined to help getting rid of the surplus in dairy stocks that came in the wake of European Community 's farmer aid. Not to much prevail, and so precious nutrients go wasted.

Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking M y family has lived in Berks County, Pennsylvania for several generations. They were not wealthy people, but always ate well and lived long lives. Their recipes are difficult to translate because they were never really written down, just memorized from watching your mother cook, and her mother, and her mother. Things like 'a pinch' 'a dash' 'a handful' 'some' had to be translated into teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, etc. Along the line we've all come up with our own 'short cuts' because of time constraints, whatever. Customer Rating: Review Summary: Interesting Reading - Problematic Recipes Review: C. Countess van Limburg Stirum has written an interesting cookbook discussing the food of the Netherlands. I'm part Dutch but know nothing about their food other than those cute windmill cookies you can buy at grocery stores. With relatively few Dutch cookbooks available, I was eager to purchase this book. Overall, the cookbook is interesting, and the author admirably describes the food and food-related customs of the country. However, her writing is choppy and difficult to understand at times. Admittedly, the writer's first language is probably not English, but the American publisher should have done more editing. Although no photos are included of the recipes, a number of the author's hand-drawn pictures are included throughout the cookbook. The pictures are fairly odd, portraying a rather old-fashioned Holland. The cover, for instance, depicts people eating raw herring in a scene that could be straight out of a Rembrandt painting.

A newly revised edition of a groundbreaking work in the growing field of food history, Sauerkraut Yankees offers recipes from an 1848 Pennsylvania Dutch cookbook, rearranged into chapters with insightful introductory comments on some aspect of each dish its history, origin, or use in terms of Pennsylvania Dutch culture. The full gamut of the Dutch diet is represented, from calf's head soup, sauerkraut, and roasted suckling pig to pickled red beets, egg punch, and mince pie.
Customer Rating: Review Summary: Excellent Study of a Major American Cuisine. Review: `Sauerkraut Yankees' by Pennsylvania Food Historian, William Woys Weaver is a treatise and concordance based on a Pennsylvania Dutch cookbook published in Harrisburg in 1848. Titled `Die Geschickte Hausfrau' (The Handy Housewife) and written in `Pennsylvania High German', it was a collection of traditional German and New World recipes done by a printer who acquired many of the recipes by simple plagiarism from many different American and German sources. While this book is based on the 160-year-old volume, the author contributes an enormous editorial labor to make the material accessible to the modern cook and scholar. And scholarly indeed is this exposition of Pennsylvania Dutch cooking in general. I am from a Pennsylvania Dutch background and have lived on the fringes of this world for all my life and I found things about this group that I have never heard before.

A word of caution. If you go searching the Web on your own for Pennsyvlania Dutch recipes, skip any site that seems to equate Pennsylvania Dutch with Amish . The Amish are a small minority of the Pennsylvania Dutch people, and though we share a common culinary heritage, those of us who are not Amish resent it when outlanders give them all the credit. Thanks, pardon the sermon, and read on.
