    Effective alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention programs weave together multiple prevention strategies into a comprehensive and coordinated effort. Alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention programs at DHHS focus on developing and supporting a system of prevention services statewide. The goals of these programs are to:
    • reduce the demand for substances and to strengthen individuals, families and communities to meet the challenges of life events and transitions;
    • strengthen and preserve families; and
    • create and reinforce those conditions that promote healthy behaviors in all communities.
    Alcohol and other drug abuse prevention activities include peer leadership programs, school-based assistance, drop-in centers and after school programs. DHHS is also a substance abuse technical assistance resource for other NH government operations and provides support to other agencies to develop the capacity to identify and respond to substance abuse issues, assists with policy development, helps implement best practices, and provides staff training on substance abuse prevention and treatment. Tobacco prevention activities include grants, training and technical assistance to local prevention organizations, surveillance and evaluation efforts, coordination of the Youth Network Opposing Tobacco (YNOT), and oversight of advertising and media campaigns targeted toward the tobacco industry to counter the promotion of tobacco products in NH.
