powered by Google Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention: The Parent Connection Two of the biggest concerns parents have when they send their sons and daughters to college are whether they will be safe, and whether they will do well academically. Both of those concerns are legitimate, and both are closely related to alcohol and other drugs, whether used by the student or by their fellow students. So parents deserve to know what schools are doing to curb alcohol and other drug use, and college administrators must be prepared to answer tough questions about their alcohol and other drug prevention policies and programs. Alcohol and College: A Parent’s Guide
For many parents, bringing up the subject of alcohol is not easy. You may be unsure of when or how to begin and your student may dodge the conversation. However, it is important for you to be aware of the risks and consequences associated with alcohol so you can help your student be aware. Impaired judgment from drinking can lead to risky behavior causing academic, legal, and personal problems. It is important to understand the risks associated with drinking.
To help start the conversation, Alcohol and Drug Education Programs has provided you with a list of eight discussion topics compiled by College Parents of America ( i ) (CPA). By having this conversation before your student arrives on campus, you help educate them so they can make responsible decisions. While parents may not be able to actively monitor students away from home, they can be available to talk and listen, and that is just as important. It can do more than help shape lives; it can save lives.

Your daughter is not your "little girl" any more. In fact, if you've longed for a friendship with your children, you may have that opportunity at this stage. PAYADA is committed to increasing the number of drug-free youth by sponsoring alcohol and other drug education, sharing information, providing positive activities, and building partnerships to create a stronger community. Programs: EDUCATION CLASSES PAYADA sponsors education classes for elementary school students and their parents. These sessions are taught as a combined effort between Elementary School Resource Officers and School Counselors. The curriculum includes information on signs and symptoms of use, general information about a variety of drugs, current trends, developing good communication skills, promoting refusal skills for youth, community resources, and where to go for more information. These classes are free to the public and take place primarily in elementary schools. In addition to the education classes, PAYADA staff, volunteers and School Resource Officers visit local school classes on a regular basis. School Resource Officers provide on-going student support in the development of resistance/refusal skills. The PAYADA program also provides ongoing training and support for affiliate PAYADA programs throughout the state of Idaho.

Parent Action on Drugs grew out of the concern of a group of parents who were troubled by the growing threat that alcohol and other drugs posed for their school-aged children. Registered as a charity in 1983, today PAD offers a wide range of programs and services aimed at prevention, education and support.
PAD's mission is to address issues of substance use among youth through outreach, prevention, education, and parent support. PAD enhances the capacity of parents, youth and communities to promote an environment that encourages youth to make informed choices. Prevention The first point of prevention is in the home. With this in mind, PAD offers parent-focused, up-to-date information to increase awareness of tobacco, alcohol and other drug use. PAD helps parents prepare for the challenges their children face every day. PAD's programs are designed to prevent substance abuse among teens by giving parents ways to talk to their children about drugs and to identify problems before they become serious. These resources help strengthen family bonds, improve parenting skills and reinforce family interactions from the early years through adolescence. Parent resources answer questions like "When do I start talking to my child about drugs?" and discuss sensitive subjects such as cultural conflicts and peer pressure. They provide practical advice for parents who ask, "What can I do?"
