41. Science And The Environment Bulletin: Natural Disasters On The Rise
drought is Canada s most expensive natural disaster in a cumulative sense.Over 40 severe events have occurred over the past 200 years in Western Canada
http://www.ec.gc.ca/science/sandefeb03/a3_e.html
Natural Disasters on the Rise
Over the past decade, Canada has experienced many of its largest natural disasters, and experts believe that even bigger and more devastating ones are inevitable. While geophysical disasters, such as earthquakes, have remained relatively constant in this country over the past 50 years, weather-related disasters have skyrocketed. Climate change is projected to exacerbate this situation in future, as it is expected to increase the frequency and severity of some extreme weather events. To examine this trend and help determine ways to mitigate its risks, a team of public- and private-sector partners, led by Environment Canada's Meteorological Service of Canada, formed the Canadian Natural Hazards Assessment Project. Key players include the Office of Critical Infrastructure Protection and Emergency Preparedness, the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, private insurance companies, emergency responders, academics, sociologists, and engineers. After more than three years of collecting and analyzing data, the project team has written 20 technical papers on the subject, most of which will be published early this year in a special edition of the Journal of Natural Hazards . Also scheduled for release by this spring is a summary document for decision makers and members of the public. The team's findings indicate that a combination of factors are behind this upward trend, not only in Canada, but also around the world. Chief among these is the fact that human beings have greatly increased their vulnerability to suffering some degree of loss from a hazardous event. This has occurred due to the many economic, socio-demographic, and technological changes that have taken place over the past 50 years.

TalentEd UNIT: NATURAL DISASTERS L.M. Horder, Sydney This Literature/Special Interest Unit was devised to cater for the special needs of the Year 7/8 composite gifted and talented class at a junior secondary Catholic school in Sydney. In the class there are 17 boys who have been selected for the Extended Studies Program, which is a pull-out program in the school. RATIONALE This unit is one of three I devised for my term working as the teacher of the year 7 composite gifted and talented class. Each of the other three terms are taken by different teachers as the Co-ordinator believes this utilises the teachers' skills and interests best. Before the term begins the units of work are discussed with the other teachers involved in the program and a general overview given to the whole staff. OBJECTIVES 1. To broaden the students' experiences by exposing them to the realities of past and possibly future natural disasters. 2. To increase the students' factual knowledge of the causes, actualities and consequences of natural disasters. 3. To appreciate the broad spectrum of knowledge across a range of subject areas.

Forest Fires are another form of natural disaster but which can also cause millions of dollars of damage and destroy homes in a few hours or days.
Credit: WMO Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja, Indonesia’s director of human rights, humanitarian and socio-cultural affairs, was visibly shaken when he described to IRIN his country’s initial reaction to the tsunami on the morning of 26 December 2004. “We were all immediately in a state of shock. So very shocked by this calamity beyond imagination,” he said.
Puja described how thousands of police and military personnel also were killed as the wave swept through Aceh, washing away helicopters, vehicles, weapons and whole barracks. “They just disappeared,” he said, “and we were all scrambling to help the survivors. Even on the first day lines and lines of trucks were waiting at Jakarta airport with assistance - so much spontaneous reaction from ordinary people. On the second day, the prayers were attended by everyone - Christians, Muslims and Buddhists.”
POLLUTION: Years of poorly regulated emissions from modern industry have contributed to climate change and less predictable weather paterns. Experts say the main cause of increased natural disasters is climate change

Natural disasters take many different forms and can happen without warning. Earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, drought, typhoons and hurricanes are all natural disasters.

The recent earthquake of 26th December 2004 has resulted in one of the worst natural disasters in living memory. It was a massive underwater quake and occurred in the Indian Ocean. This caused a huge tidal-wave (a tsunami) to cross the Indian Ocean. It destroyed coastlines, communities and brought death and destruction to many people. Thousands of people were killed as the wave travelled miles across the ocean to distant beaches. Whole families were swept out to sea or drowned as the sea invaded the land. The survivors need fresh water, food and shelter as well as medical help. People from all over the world are giving lots of money so that towns and villages can be rebuilt. Why do earthquakes happen?

Poverty is tearing Africa apart. It is the root cause of internal unrest, cross-border conflicts, land redistribution problems and political instability in many African countries. Natural disasters (principally floods and droughts) are often the triggering mechanism for the downward spiral of impoverishment and eventually to anarchy if not brought under control. Is there anything that scientists can do to check and reverse this trend? Budapest Declaration on Science and the Use of Scientific Knowledge
A combined UNESCO/ICSU World Conference on Science was held in Budapest, Hungary from 26 June to 1 July 1999. The following are extracts from the Declaration on Science and the Use of Scientific Knowledge produced by the Conference. We seek active collaboration across all fields of scientific endeavour, i.e. the natural sciences such as the physical, earth and biological sciences, the biomedical and engineering sciences, and the social and human sciences…Greater interdisciplinary efforts…are a prerequisite for dealing with ethical, social, cultural, environmental, gender, economic, and health issues…What distinguishes the poor (be they people or countries) from the rich is not only that they have fewer assets, but also that they are largely excluded from the creation and benefits of scientific knowledge…
The declaration considered that:

Drought + War = Disaster By Brian Carnell Wednesday, February 28, 2001 Since 1995, the number of people living in areas that the World Food Program has designated as desperately in need of food aid has soared from only 4 million people five years ago to a near-record 60 million people today. What's been happening? The World Food Program blames the increase in near-famine conditions on a series of natural disasters, primarily floods and earthquakes. WFP director Catherine Bertine told the Boston GLobe, "There are so many countries affected. It's as if Mother Nature took a paint brush and painted a whole huge swath of the world with drought." To be sure, there has been a good deal of drought affection Africa and Asia. Part of the blame goes to the erratic weather patterns that are a result of the El Nino/La Nina event, and of course part of the answer is that since recorded time there have always been natural disasters. But natural disasters do not have to lead to famine. Jean Francois Vidal of Action Against Hunger puts the causation of hunger quite succinctly. "Where there is drought there is not necessarily famine," Vidal told the Globe, "But where there is drought and civil war, there is disaster."
