Teaching Your Teenager to Drive
Carleton Kendrick Ed.M., LCSW
What to Do and What to Expect Teaching your teen to drive requires considerable patience, empathy, and the knowledge of what is needed to best prepare her to become a skilled, responsible driver. Many parents understandably approach this task with trepidation and high anxiety. The following suggestions, facts, and tips will help you know what to do and what to expect when you and your teen put the rubber to the road.
  • Although many kids still take some formal driver-education training before they get their driver's license, the most influential training they receive comes from observing their parents' behind-the-wheel skills, judgment, and behavior.
  • Motor vehicle accidents are the primary cause of death among our nation's teens, killing 5,000 youngsters each year. This fact alone suggests that parents need to establish clear and firm conditions, limits, and rules regarding their teens' obtaining their licenses. Veteran driver-education instructors usually recommend at least 40 hours of supervised driving (most states require only 6) on all kinds of roads and in all kinds of situations (nighttime driving, rush hour driving, driving in the rain and snow, etc.).
  • Once you have told your teen that you will allow her to begin learning to drive, let her be the one to take the initiative to get the driver-education ball rolling. If your teen is not driving you crazy about teaching her to drive, she's probably too nervous to begin the process. Don't bring up the question of her anxiety. Just let her know you're ready to begin when she's ready.

Commentary Sure he could coach, but could he teach us to drive? By Dick Sparrer Thirty-one winning teams in 33 seasons? Pretty good. Sixteen league champions? OK. Four Central Coast Section crowns? Not bad. The statistics may speak for themselves. But how good of a coach was Benny Pierce really? Well, just take a look at my DMV printout and it speaks for itself. You see, Benny was literally a driving force in my life. Because back in the summer of '65, he was my behind-the-wheel driving instructor. Oh yeah, I know everyone has a great Benny Pierce story. They reflect upon his outstanding abilities as an outstanding athlete at Los Gatos High School in the 1950s, his remarkable instincts as a football coach at Saratoga High School in a career that spanned three decades, and, according to his friends, his unbelievable competitive fire on the golf course. But my only story is about a guy with good enough reflexes to hit the brakes when I didn't to save us from disaster on a relatively new stretch of Highway 17. You see, Benny's accomplishments as a coach are the stuff legends are made of. He is arguably the finest high school football coach to ever prowl the sidelines in the Santa Clara Valley. He certainly was the best of his era.

H ELPING Y OUR T EEN B ECOME A S AFE D RIVER No. 76 A driver's license is one of the biggest status symbols among high school students. Getting a driver's license is not only a social asset but it makes the adolescent feel more independent than ever before. Parents no longer have to do the driving - the teen can get places on his or her own. Most teens count the hours and days until they can get their learners permit (usually age 16) and take their driving test to demonstrate driving competence. Some teens however, may be pushed to drive by peer or parental pressures before they feel ready. Parents often have many concerns and fear for their teen's safety on the road. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), teenage drivers account for only 7% of the driving population but are involved in 14% of fatal crashes. Traffic crashes are the #1 cause of death and injury for people ages 15-19. In 1998, more than 6,300 teens died in motor vehicle collisions. Problems which contribute to the high crash rate of young drivers include: driving inexperience, lack of adequate driving skills, risk taking, poor driving judgement and decision making, alcohol consumption and excessive driving during high risk hours (11PM-5AM). Additionally, parents should make sure that the vehicle their teen drives is in safe condition (brakes, tires, etc.) and working properly. The vehicle should have essential emergency equipment (flares, flashlight, jumper cables, etc.) and the teen should know how to use it. A cell phone is helpful for emergencies but parents must stress that it can be a dangerous distraction if it is used while driving.

Nature of the Industry About this section Back to Top Education is an important part of life. The amount and type of education that individuals receive are a major influence on both the types of jobs they are able to hold and their earnings. Lifelong learning is important in acquiring new knowledge and upgrading one’s skills, particularly in this age of rapid technological and economic changes. The educational services industry includes a variety of institutions that offer academic education, vocational or career and technical instruction, and other education and training to millions of students each year. Because school attendance is compulsory until at least age 16 in all 50 States and the District of Columbia, elementary, middle, and secondary schools are the most numerous of all educational establishments. Elementary, middle, and secondary schools provide academic instruction to students in kindergarten through grade 12, in public schools, parochial schools, boarding and other private schools, and military academies. Some secondary schools offer a mixture of academic and career and technical instruction.

Do programmes to teach young people about driving do more harm than good?
Sometimes things done with the best of intentions turn out not to be as good as people had hoped, and might even prove harmful. This is not uncommon in health care. Cochrane reviews, by bringing together the relevant evidence, have sometimes provided the necessary enlightment. The same might now be the case for driver education programmes in school and colleges. One of the Cochrane reviews, which appears for the first time this week with the release of issue 3, 2001 of The Cochrane Library , assesses the research. It concludes that randomised trials provide no evidence that this type of education reduces the number of crashes involving the taught drivers. On the contrary, the reviewers conclude that the evidence suggests that the teaching might lead to an increase in the number of young people involved in traffic crashes. In the UK, 7% of people with a driving license are between 17 and 21 years old. But, 13% of drivers involved in road crashes are in this age range. To try to reduce this figure, the government has planned to introduce driver education programmes in schools and colleges in the hope that this will lead to better drivers. On the other hand, some people are worried that the programmes will produce more young drivers and lead to more road crashes. This new Cochrane review has tried to find out the answer.

Pages : sbhikes I've been wondering this for a while. I use hand signals both when riding my bike and on my Vespa. No problems with left turn hand signals. People seem to understand them. But right turn hand signals, nobody seems to know what that is. I think they believe I'm waving hello or something. Do they still teach hand signals in driver's ed?
The other weird thing I see all the time is I give a hand signal (and on my Vespa it's in addition to my electric turn signal) and it appears the cars don't believe me. Sure, you can accidentally have an electronic turn signal blinking away so I can see why you might not trust that, but if I'm sticking my hand out there it's no accident. I didn't just "forget" my hand was sticking out after my last turn.
Anyway, the right turn signal is left arm bent up at the elbow, right? That's what it used to be anyway.
