Driver Education and Testing in America
(Part of the Reasonable Drivers Unanimous site) In one word it's a joke. The biggest problem with American drivers is the lack of any real drivers education and testing. Driving around a small test course is hardly a test of a driver's ability; it's a test of being able to stop at a stop sign, being able to back up in a straight line, and, if it is a really hard test, being able to parallel park. The tests need to be on the road and NOT in the equivalent of a parking lot. A potential driver needs to be tested on things like: merging into traffic, passing, staying to the right, etc. And how well they can handle emergencies like skidding, spin outs, etc. Yeah, they (sometimes) teach it in drivers ed but they usually don't give a motorist any hands-on experience. Tips for Selecting a Driver Training Program Use the following tips in selecting the best driver education school for you: Ask friends and neighbors -
Have they attended a program? Can they recommend one for you? Call several programs -
Find out about course schedules, fees, registration procedures, and the next available course dates and times. Visit programs -
Ask to see classrooms and if you could observe part of a course. Classrooms should be clean, orderly and set up to conduct classroom sessions. Ask to see the program textbook. (Note: The Georgia Driver's Manual is not a textbook.) Is the text up to date? Are there enough textbooks for all students? Check the Driver Education Program License -
It must be displayed in the school's business office. Ask how many fully licensed driver education instructors work for the school -
Determine how many instructors teach classroom, behind-the-wheel, or both phases of the program. The number of instructors may affect the time it will take to complete all the program requirements.

Safety Tips Teen Driver Safety Series Part Three: The (Mis)Education of American Drivers By Scott Memmer Experts differ as to solutions. One camp calls for increased limitation of teenage access to motor vehicles, citing high accident rates for young drivers. A second group lobbies for improved driver training, arguing that increased education and behind-the-wheel instruction will cure what ails America's newest drivers. What's the solution?

    15-year-old needs driver's ed.
March 2005 It's time for my 15 year old son to take Driver's Ed, and it's not offered at his school. I was hoping to have him do it over his spring break. Can anyone recommend a good place to do this? Also, I know that you can take this course online, but I am skeptical that it would be as effective as taking the course in person (I still remember the effect seeing the movie ''Red Asphalt'' had on me 30 years ago!) Does anyone have any input on how the online courses are? Thanks a lot! KC My daughter did an online driver's ed course because we had the hardest time scheduling the class. I helped her study (a fair amount)-I learned a lot myself doing it for the second time and some 30 years later as well! We collected as many exams as we could from friends with older kids, etc. to have some practice material. (The online course was basically the DMV booklet with quizzes at the end of each section.) The classes these days can be REALLY bad. Neither instructors nor kids are very motivated. They are really geared toward passing the written test (not really enlightening anyone). My son's instructor basically read the DMV booklet to the kids. No one was happy. Plus, the number of classroom hours is pretty intense.
