Drivers ed used to teach organ donation
Since Virginia began requiring that organ donation be taught, Robin Gary said she's seen many of her students choose to become donors. Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Organ donation Schools or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? AMELIA, Virginia (AP) It used to be that learning to drive meant mastering the clutch or perfecting the art of parallel parking. But some teenagers getting behind the wheel are getting a lesson in life and death. More and more, states are teaching students in drivers education classes how they can become organ and tissue donors. "You don't have any use of these things when you die, so why not?" Robin Gary, a drivers education teacher, told a class at Amelia County High School, about 40 miles west of Richmond. Gary told the sophomores that 11 people die each day waiting for transplants and asked the girls to imagine a loved one who needed an organ. Then, she said, "Imagine you know there was someone out there who could be a donor and wasn't." The Department of Health and Human Services recently allocated $24.8 million annually in part to establish a national curriculum for school districts that choose to teach about organ donation.

Driver Education Program
What is a Driver Education Program? A driver education program is designed to teach new drivers fundamental skills and basic knowledge about driving a motor vehicle. All driver education programs are required to use Department of Motor Vehicle Safety-approved standardized curriculum with Department of Motor Vehicle Safety licensed instructors. The program consists of 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. Young drivers may qualify for a driver's license, but they're still learning to drive. They tend to overestimate their abilities behind the wheel. And, as we all know in Georgia, speed limits fluctuate, traffic gets heavy, and rain and snow are hazards. Scare tactics and lectures do not work with young drivers, but supervising their practice driving over a longer learning period does. This is where parents play a critical role. Driver education is only designed to teach fundamental skills and knowledge. Parents, guardians, and "supervising" drivers must do the rest.

Safety Products ... Passenger Survey Five-Tier Driver Risk Prevention Teacher Preparation The science of driving is composed of many habitual actions that a driver must acquire over a period of time. The science of driving is highly orchestrated under a very deliberately structured taxonomy incorporating vision training and decision-making skills. The odds that a driver will learn to acquire a lifelong style of empowering driving habits without having had formal education is as likely as winning a state lottery. Drivers need to receive effective risk management behavioral training. Such training can only occur when instructors learn to perform a systematic method of driving that must become their internal style of driving. To meet the current needs of helping novice drivers as well as all drivers to reduce the risk of driving, the National Institute For Driver Behavior has proposed a new five-tiered structuring of how driver educators are to be trained and certified.

The dilemma of what to teach
Dan Keegan
Shortly after midnight not long ago, six young people climbed into a station wagon and left a party in a small rural area. One was dropped off not far from the party and the other five continued along the winding country road. With its dips, curves, and hills, the road was not one for speed. There was no safe place for passing. The station wagon carrying the five youths came up fast behind another car, then tailgated so closely that the car's occupants thought it would hit the back bumper. Inexplicably, the driver of the station wagon pulled out to pass just at the crest of a hill. The driver of a third car coming the other way probably didn't have a chance. In addition to the youths in the station wagon, three of the five occupants in the other car were killed. The crash was a classic case of all the risks associated with teen-driving tragedieslate at night, a crowded car, possible drinking (beer bottles were found in the wreckage), and poor judgment. The huge media response and the calls for tougher regulation and more education were predictable. Whether graduated licensing, now being introduced in many jurisdictions, will reduce the risk faced by novice drivers has been widely discussed. Even more debatable is the effectiveness of driver education as a countermeasure. The great variety in approaches to training and educating drivers around the world testifies to the uncertainty about what training can do and how best to do it. Few jurisdictions have mandatory programs. In many countries, nothing more than a very simple quiz on the rules and a 10 to 15-minute road test stand between a license applicant and full driving privileges.

Race Car Drivers Teach Ohio Teens Driving Skills
Statistic: 26,000 Accidents Caused By Teens In 2 Years
POSTED: 3:00 pm EDT May 3, 2005 LEXINGTON, Ohio The rate of Ohio teen drivers getting into accidents is alarming, and many parents worry that the typical driver's education course isn't preparing teens enough for the dangers of the road. Now, one driving school run by race car drivers is taking a different approach to teaching teens driving skills that could save their lives, reported 5 On Your Side's Brad Harvey. Melissa Brunetti took her seat at the Mid-Ohio Driving School just a week after adding to Ohio's already stunning accident statistics. She was lucky to survive a crash that destroyed her truck, but many are not so lucky. NewsChannel5 investigated and exclusively obtained data from the Ohio Department of Public Safety, showing that in the past two years there were 26,625 car accidents caused by teenagers in the NewsChannel5 viewing area. That includes 8,237 in Cuyahoga Count, 5,143 in Summit County and 4,366 in Stark County.
