Drawings that look the most like photographs, one standard of realism, are often thought of as “the best”. Drawing can be this, but it is much more. Drawing teaches us ways of seeing, ways to expand our perception of, reflection on, and expression of, what we see. By looking at drawings from different times and cultures, we are invited into those worlds, worlds whose ideals, struggles, and values are embodied in their art. You have seen this, looking at cave paintings, at rock carvings by Native Americans or Australian Aboriginals, at drawings by Leonardo da Vinci or Michelangelo, at abstract drawings from the 20 th century. In each case you knew you were not in your moment; you were in another’s mind, another’s place, a time, an idea that was outside of your experience. In this class we will explore the visual elements of drawing; line, contour, value, shape, negative space, texture, light, perspective, proportion through sighting, and the composition of a work. We will experiment with a variety of drawing materials including charcoal, conte crayon, and sumi ink. Most work will be from the still-life, with some exploration of architecture using perspective, human posture in short poses, portraiture, and outdoor drawing as weather permits. Through this work you will learn the foundational skills needed to pursue and develop your own visual language as an artist.
