Spontaneous Speaking:
Drama Activities for Confidence and Fluency
ISBN: 1900783924 DELTA Publishing 2005, Published in the Professional Perspectives series of teacher resource books
David Heathfield, (author review)
The story of how Spontaneous Speaking got written
Spontaneous Speaking came about through a long process of trial and error. Ever since starting out in EFL in 1986, I've been keen to try things out. I'm especially drawn to activities which stimulate students, energise the classroom and lead to positive group dynamics. In my free time I got involved in community theatre and found out just how much I benefited personally from doing drama activities in workshops and in pre-performance warm-ups, not as teacher or director, but as a group member. I took many of these activity ideas and redesigned them for the language classroom. Even the most inhibited students started talking more confidently when I made some lessons a bit more like drama workshops. Removing tables, pens and written prompts, students became more natural and spontaneous in their interaction. They could practise extended speaking in the relative safety of the classroom before putting it into use in the outside world. I eventually wrote a Speaking Fluently course for the Isca School of English, Exeter, UK where I was teaching. I had the challenge of devising activities and then describing them on paper clearly enough for teachers with little or no experience of drama to pick up and use. This required lots of practice and activities were amended and honed in consultation with many supportive colleagues.

Giving a voice: drama and speaking and listening resources for key stage 3
Introduction
What are these resources?
Each unit in these resources is a sequence of lessons in which speaking and listening and drama are explicitly taught. We have worked with teachers to develop them to show how the national curriculum requirements can be implemented and how the objectives from the Framework for teaching English: Years 7, 8 and 9 can be taught. The units complement the Key Objectives Bank (years 7, 8 and 9 English) and the Key Stage 3 Drama Objectives Bank which the Key Stage 3 English Strand has published. The resources cover years 7, 8, and 9 and include:
  • eight units on objectives from the speaking, listening and group discussion and interaction section of the framework;
  • nine units relating to objectives for drama.

EFFECTIVE LEARNING AND TEACHING IN SCOTTISH SECONDARY SCHOOLS:DRAMA
3 STAFFING, ACCOMMODATION AND RESOURCES
Staffing Fewer than half of Scottish secondary schools are able to provide specialist drama courses for pupils in S1/S2. Similarly, the majority of pupils in secondary schools do not have the opportunity to follow the Standard Grade course in drama. Specialist teacher training in drama is provided in five institutions. In recent years, the number of applications for drama courses in some of these institutions has been very low. Nevertheless, some institutions have reported that the increase in the number of schools offering drama courses at Standard Grade and Higher Grade has helped to attract very able returners, well qualified by their work. in the theatre and media, to seek to train as teachers. In the schools inspected in recent years, all staff were qualified teachers. The vast majority of drama teachers were competent and committed professionals. A few, although knowledgeable about the subject, were not formally qualified to teach drama. Some staff also had limited experience of teaching drama. It was not uncommon for drama teachers to have had some form of professional experience beyond teaching which helped to inform their planning and teaching. Many had sought additional, professional development but, for some, staff development opportunities had been very limited. With the advent of new courses as part of the Higher Still development programme, there will be a continuing need for all teachers of drama to receive appropriate staff development.
