... Graduate School The graduate program in drama trains scholar-artists for the academic profession, with a focus on performance history, dramatic literature, and theory. Students are encouraged to pursue their own scholarly interests under the guidance of faculty both in this department and in others on campus. Our program is small enough to allow close relationships between students and faculty, with each degree candidate receiving personal attention. The current faculty is often supplemented by inviting distinguished academics from other universities to teach seminars in their fields. Recently, Professor Virginia Scott of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst offered a course in Moliere; Professor Richard Emmerson taught a course on medieval theatre; Professor Don B. Wilmeth of Brown University gave a seminar on George Bernard Shaw; and Professor David Krasner of Yale University one on African-American theatre. The department usually accepts two or three candidates for the Master of Arts degree and three or four candidates for the Doctor of Philosophy degree each year. Departmental fellowships and assistantships are distributed on the basis of financial need

In essence, that philosophy is: The content of the programs will be determined primarily by outside experts, selected for their objectivity, stature in their fields and knowledge of the needs of teachers and students. Only knowledgeable, highly skilled writers, directors and producers will be selected to create the programs. The programs will be free and easily accessible to any public school in the country, including the states that are outside of ConocoPhillips' marketing area. About Us Irvine and UCI Both UCI and the city of Irvine were founded in 1965, on a former buffalo ranch in Southern Orange County, California. The campus is four miles from the Pacific and approximately half way between Los Angeles and San Diego. Although Irvine remains parklike and suburban, it centers a fast-growing county of more than two million people, high-tech industries, world-renowned theme parks and shopping centers, and magnificent beaches. Increasingly, it is becoming a cultural center as well. The Tony Award-winning South Coast Repertory and the Orange County Performing Arts Center are only ten minutes from the campus in Costa Mesa. Half an hour away are the semi-professional Laguna Playhouse California Repertory Company , and Shakespeare Orange County La Jolla Playhouse San Diego Repertory Theatre Pasadena Playhouse , and Cerritos Center and La Mirada theatres are also within easy reach. The Bowers Museum , the Orange County Museum of Art , and Opera Pacific add to the growing cultural attractions of the county, and the Irvine 21 Megaplex is the largest cinema complex in the world. GOODMAN THEATRE YOUTH DRAMA WORKSHOPS TO BEGIN SUMMER SESSIONS
The Youth Drama Workshops, founded by the Goodman Theatre in 1995, provide participants with the unique opportunity to develop and stage their own theatrical productions, allowing them to learn about the art of theater through hands-on experience. Although Goodman artists and consulting experts aid the process by providing guidance and expertise during the six-week project, the final product belongs to the young people who create it. In addition, the workshops offer participants the chance to jump start their imaginations and experience the world of professional theater by attending a variety of plays. The workshops will culminate in a public performance of each of the productions, showcasing the talent and creativity of the participants. Specific information on the individual Youth Drama Workshops follows: GOODMAN THEATRE/ CHICAGO PARK DISTRICT YOUTH DRAMA WORKSHOPS: In its first year at Madden Park and in its second year at Hamilton Park, the Goodman/Chicago Park District Youth Drama Workshops include 15 high-school students from Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood and 15 high-school students from the Englewood neighborhood who will work in every aspect of the creative and technical process as they design, stage and perform their production. Participants will meet daily Monday through Friday for six weeks to work on the production, all the while building reading, writing, communication and basic job and leadership skills for potential future positions with the Chicago Park District. Working to construct their own show from its inception through opening night, the students will be rewarded with a modest stipend.

Anthropologists do ethnographic, archival, and archaeological research on various aspects of individual and collective experience in all time periods and parts of the world. Because field experience is essential to the discipline, the department sponsors an anthropological experience program, designed to give students the opportunity to carry out anthropological field work under professional conditions. Options include the major, two interdepartmental majors (geography-anthropology, sociology-anthropology), and a correlate sequence. Contact the Anthropology department at http://anthropology.vassar.edu/ Art: The department offers courses in art history as well studio courses in various media. Course offerings in art history are extraordinarily complete and diverse, beginning with a historical and analytical introduction to architecture, sculpture, and painting, team-taught by the entire department. Eligibility for the studio concentration is determined by evaluation of the student's class work and a review of the student's portfolio by the studio faculty. Students routinely undertake internships at major New York museums (the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney, the Museum of Modern Art, among others), as well as at New York galleries and auction houses. Options include a major in either art history or studio art, and a correlate sequence in art history. Both majors require a senior thesis or project. Contact the Art department at

Cañada College Announces Openings in Teacher Credential Program
Program is Designed for Working Adults and offered by San Francisco State University
Media Contact: Jeanne Gross, (650) 306-3747 www.sfsu.edu/~credinfo Jeanne Gross, interim dean of the University Center, said the Teacher Credential Program is ideal for para-professionals, volunteers, substitutes, classroom aides, and others who might be working in schools but want to become teachers. It is also ideal for professionals looking for a career change. “I came into teaching in the elementary/secondary arena somewhat serendipitously,” Gralen said. “My wife, Beth Orr, is an actor/director and drama teacher and we had both taught at the college level in the Pacific Northwest . After relocating to the Bay Area in the late 90s I pursued independent work as a sculptor but found it to be isolating and a real struggle financially. I began substitute teaching and working the drama program with my wife at the high school level and found that I enjoyed it and it just evolved from there.” “Paul is a perfect example of the type of student we find taking classes in our University Center ,” she said. “They are educated professionals looking to increase their skills or transition into another profession. Not everyone has the time to drive to San Jose or San Francisco to continue their education. The University Center gives them another option closer to home.”

Laying the groundwork for such activities are University faculty and graduate students, who visit selected elementary and middle school classrooms to work hand-in-hand with the teachers. The goal is to train those who are interested in using drama as a teaching technology to increase student productivity and academic achievements. The program has produced some dramatic results. Following projects in Austin and La Joya, a small town in the Rio Grande Valley, students showed marked progress in TAAS and TAKS scores, increased class attendance, and a lower dropout rate. After the initial two-year start-up, local teachers were able to sustain the program by themselves and train others, which allowed UT to assimilate its research and move into new communities. A two-year Drama for Schools project is now being implemented in the Tyler Independent School District. Drama Endorsement
The drama endorsement program is for teachers who already have some background in theatre. It is meant to serve those who wish to seek a position as a theatre specialist and those who wish to incorporate drama in their classroom teaching. A major focus of the program is drama for learning, for inquiry, for social-issues-based dialogue and action, for documentary theatre. A second major focus is on technical theatre know-how and teaching strategies for making technical theatre experiences successful and safe with middle level and high school students. Because the program does not include basic acting classes or other foundational content coursework, students applying for admission must document previous experience in theatre. This prerequisite can be met by an undergraduate major or minor in theatre arts, or significant coursework in theatre arts; by documented extensive experience in college, community, or professional theatre; or by a combination of some experiences in theatre and completion of a recent acting class with a letter of recommendation from the instructor. The program has a balance of: I. coursework that explores theatrical techniques, physical theatre, improvisation, devised theatre, drama for learning, and drama for dialogue and for arts-based communication (four semester hours) and

2005-06 Educational Plan

Emphasis: DRAMA (Acting/Directing/Theater Technology)
Degree: Associate in Arts
PURPOSE:
The Drama program meets the needs of students interested in acting, directing, or technical theater work, who intend either to complete a two-year program or to transfer to a four-year institution.
The program can be an important supplement to the work of those who plan to major in the humanities and social sciences. Dramatic experience provides insights into the complex motivation for human behavior.
For students who plan to become educators, particularly those interested in elementary and secondary school teaching, courses in drama can provide insight into methods of teaching and learning through "language arts".
If you are entering the drama program with the intent to transfer to a four-year program at a college or university in Washington state, you should see the drama advisor for information on special requirements, if any, of that school. This information may have a bearing on courses you choose to satisfy distribution requirements.
A maximum of 15 credits in DRAM 100 may be credited toward an Associate in Arts Degree. Up to 5 credits in DRAM may be used as Humanities distribution credits.

http://www.stanford.edu/dept/drama/academic_programs/phd.html
Doctor of Philosophy Drama does not set up an opposition between text and performance, theory and practice. Stanford's unique Ph.D. program combines a practical and academic course of study in which all candidates must function as both theater directors and scholars. It is one of the most demanding such programs in the country. The goal of the program is to give students a knowledge of the field from all perspectives, so that their scholarly work is grounded in practice, and their directorial work is based on solid scholarly analysis. Normally, the Ph.D. program is completed in five years. The first two years should be devoted to full-time graduate study, the third year to graduate study and research, and years four and five to teaching and writing the dissertation. Following formal admission to candidacy (usually following the second year), the dissertation must be completed and approved within five years. A candidate taking more than five years must repass the written examinations in order to reinstate candidacy. Read on for more specific requirements, or skip to the application process The Department of Drama participates in the Graduate Program in the Humanities (GPH) leading to a joint Ph.D. degree in Drama and Humanities. The program offers students an opportunity to broaden their knowledge of intellectual and cultural history by focusing on texts and ideas which have been central to all humanistic disciplines from classical Greece to the present. At the core of the program are the five GPH seminars and participation in the culminating GPH student symposium. For more information

Drama Teacher's Summer Institute (Enrichment)
Central Washington University's Drama Teacher's Summer Institute is made up primarily of English and drama teachers who direct productions and drama programs in middle and high schools throughout the country. Some teachers seek out the Institute because they suddenly find they are in charge of a drama program, with little training or experience, while others may have years of experience, but are seeking certification or are pursuing the Master of Arts in Theatre Production. The purpose of the Drama Teacher's Summer Institute is to provide teachers with training in advanced techniques used in analyzing, producing, directing, and designing plays and musicals, as well as supporting drama curricular programs. The institute serves students in both the graduate master's program and those in post-baccalaureate studies desiring further enrichment. The Institute offers concentrated summer sessions, ranging from four to 17 days, in which drama teachers get practical experience in all the arts of theatre through scene work, design assignments, and interactive projects in both the lecture hall and the laboratory. Wide-ranging course offerings allow students to take as few as 2 credits or as many as 18. Some classes aim specifically at strategies, techniques and assessment tools unique to the high school classroom, while others use the world of professional theatre as a model.
