The Department of Performing Arts offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science degrees in drama. Course work available in the areas of acting/directing, design/production, and musical theatre permits a student to develop a program of study which focuses attention on the desired area as well as on the relationship of all theatrical elements to the whole production process. Essential to a complete course of study in the theatre is the student’s opportunity to work as performer and technician in the TWU Theatre season. Studio productions are directed and designed by advanced drama students. The practical processes of theatre production as well as academic study are stressed in order to give students a broad and diverse theatre background. Course requirements for a drama major and a drama minor follow under the degree plans of study. Students seeking certification in theatre arts on the secondary level should follow the requirements listed under Bachelor of Science with Teaching Certification in Drama.

Volume 14 Number 3 Rewriting the Ending: The Drama of Teaching
James Rhem, Executive Editor F ew would deny that classroom teaching resembles theater in many ways. Each class meeting unfolds as an episode in a larger drama framed by the semester, the year, the four years of college. Teachers strut and fret their hour upon the stage and then . . . What then? The effects of teaching, both good and bad teaching, continue (unlike applause) for years, often throughout the stu dents’ lives. And so, while teachers may put it out of their minds in order not to be paralyzed by the pressure, they often discover later that the stakes were higher than they’d realized, even in seemingly innocent moments in class. Failing to notice a hand repeatedly held up by a woman at the back of a class of eager and vocal men, for example, or an offhand remark that seemed funny at the time or a dozen other miscues, missteps and mistakes can poison an otherwise excellent performance. A professor trying to be fully mindful may be forgiven for feeling as though he’s been cast in Christopher Durang’s “Actor’s Nightmare,” a short play in which an actor awakens to discover himself onstage in a Shakespeare play, but can’t remember which one and so frantically inserts lines from as many as he can recall. Actors have a significant advantage over teachers: rehearsals. In rehearsals egos may be bruised, but no one gets hurt. Teachers work without a net. Their “rehearsals” last a semester. They try and do better the next time they teach the course, but that first “audience” may have included several inadvertent victims. If only we had the chance to rehearse in a different way, to stop the action and move from the pressures of presentation to the sometimes uncomfortable comfort of contemplating our actions. If we could step outside ourselves and see our teaching in the company of other concerned players as an actor does in preparing a play, how might our teaching improve?

October 21, 28, November 4, 11, 18 (no class 25 Thanksgiving) December 2, 9, 18 for a total of 8 classes. a co-facilitated program created and developed by Charlotte Koons and Ghislaine Grillo over several seasons, will firmly "root" the student in basic acting techniques, improvisation, monologues, and scripted scenes. Each student will also find their "wings" through the fluidity and flexibility of creative movement that adds depth to complex characterizations, and allows the whole body to express a role fully. Drama and Theatre Games for ages 9 through 11 will meet on Monday at 4:30 to 5:30 from October 4 through December 13. Parents and friends are invited to observe the class on December 13. Using theatre games, creative movement, storytelling and improvisational dialogues, students will gain an appreciation and intimate experience of the artistic choices and creative processes young actors use in the real theatre. While having a great deal of fun, students will practice abstract thinking, critical judgment and problem solving in a safe, playful and exciting environment. Drama and Theatre Games classes are taught by Dafna Soltes Stein who has a BA from Bard College Dept. of Drama and Dance. She holds a Certified Laban Movement Analyst and a NYS teacher certification in Dance Education. In addition to teaching at Posey School, she is a Teaching Artist for the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts School Partnership Program and with grants from the Huntington Arts Council and the East End Arts Council is busy producing dance programs for the community.

Based on the theories of Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner's "multiple intelligences," delineating 7 styles of learning among children, Ms. Winstead's program reflects a deep understanding of the importance in honoring individualities among children. This is particularly evident in her combined evaluation practices, Gardner's Intelligences. This Academic Drama program would provide a stimulating, comfortable, fun environment through which children of learning style differences would gain a broader understanding of basic academic concepts and processes. All children take part in this program. They receive two classroom sessions per week, where music and drama are used separately and sometimes together to create a stimulating and dynamic learning centre. The emphasis of the B.C.S music/drama program is to provide a safe and supportive environment where children can develop the confidence and enthusiasm to explore these art forms. It is a unique program in that it offers and provides a strong grounding for children's further development in their next stages of education. The program covers the New South Wales Arts curriculum document requirements and uses creating, organising, presenting, appreciating and past and present contexts as its base. Children learn to feel at ease in their classroom (music room) situation and to freely express themselves artistically. Children learn to appreciate and support each others abilities and ideas.
