Focus on: Drama at University College
Drama Program
The Drama programs (Minor, Major, Specialist) offer students the opportunity to combine high standards of practical, professionally oriented theatre training with a rich and rigorous academic program.
Housed in the Helen Gardiner Phelan Playhouse at the University of Toronto's downtown campus, this unique undergraduate program has, since 1975, offered a stimulating alternative to other university drama programs by interweaving a broad range of practical courses with a solid academic training.
The program draws instructors in academic courses from departments across the University of Toronto. Experienced and well-known theatre professionals teach practical courses.
The program has also forged links with leading Canadian theatres, including Factory Theatre, Theatre Passe Muraille, the Royal Alexandra Theatre, Theatre Columbus, and Theatre Smith-Gilmour. Our instructors' ties to these theatres, along with the UC Drama Program alumni who hold important positions in these and other professional theatres, assure our graduates of direct access to future professional theatre training and employment opportunities.
Drama Courses
The program's flexibility allows students to select from a group of courses those in which they are most interested. Class sizes are kept small, so students receive individual focus and attention. Acceptance into practical courses (performance, production, design) is based on an audition and/or interview. Students must audition each year for acceptance into the next level of performance classes. Students of the University College Drama Program also compliment their studies with selected courses from other departments.

  • Elective Courses:
  • Directing Devised Plays with Young People
  • Creating Meaning Through Community Drama: An Exploration of Cultural Democracy
  • Teaching Through Theatre: The Theory and Practice of Theatre-in-Education (TIE)
    Creating Theatre with Young People
Successful development and production of original theatre with young people requires a thorough understanding of student-centered pedagogy and the devising process, actor-centered directing skills, and comfort working with young people. Moreover, educators and artists engaged in this work must be able to apply all of this in practice.
This graduate-level certificate program, consisting of four three-credit classes, will offer students a solid grounding in the educational theory related to creating theatre with young people as well as its practical applications. The program also focuses on developing skills in arts administration and youth development, particularly in the context of after school programming. It is designed for pre-service and in-service teachers, teaching artists, and community and youth group leaders. The goal of the certificate is to give students both practical and theoretical training in these areas. Students will also work with members of the Creative Arts Team Youth Theatre over a sustained period of time.

Courses indicating PJIS are for all students, PJ for Primary-Junior students only, and IS for Intermediate-Senior students only. Some FOCI courses are required in special program tracks as indicated; these courses may be taken only by students in these program tracks. Back to Top

Arts and Administration Program Director, Dr. Gaylene Carpenter Arts and Administration Professor, Dr. Janice Rutherford The work is the first book-length treatment of Frederick (1883-1970), home efficiency expert, advertising consultant, and consumer advocate. According to Dr. Rutherford, Frederick espoused the nineteenth-century ideal of preserving the virtuous home and a woman's place within it, but while promoting a division of labor by gender, she sought for herself the power and influence available only to men. Thus, she served the fall of the early-twentieth-century "first wave" of feminism. This account of Frederick's life reflects a dilemma that continues to affect women todaywhether to seek professional gratification or to adhere to their traditional roles within the family. Celebrating religious holidays in the form of religious worship or other practices is unconstitutional. Teaching about a holiday will be constitutional if it furthers a genuine secular program of education, is presented objectively, and does not have the effect of advancing or inhibiting religion. The U. S. Supreme Court has not specifically ruled on this subject.
