DRAMA IN EDUCATION
At the University of Winnipeg
The University of Winnipeg has an excellent Education program offering both a five-year integrated B.Ed. degree and a two-year after degree in Education. In the Department of Theatre and Drama we offer an area of study in Drama in Education both as a complement to the B.Ed. program, and as a stand-alone stream for students who wish to teach drama in a variety of venues. The Drama in Education course (83.3502/6) is the capstone course in a sequence of study that prepares the student to teach drama. It undertakes a survey of the major approaches to the use of dramatic and theatrical techniques in the field of education and deals both with the teaching of theatre and drama as an art and a craft (i.e. how to teach drama in the schools) and with the use of drama as a means to deepen and enrich the students’ understanding of themselves and the world (i.e. how to use drama to teach other subjects, such as history). Ongoing consideration will be placed on drama across the school curriculum. The skill development, theories and techniques will be applicable to school and non-school settings. Our Drama in Education area is popular not only with students working towards their Bachelor of Education degree those who wish to teach in the public school system but also with those who intend to go on and teach drama in community centres, in programs associated with regional theatres throughout Canada, and in a variety of other settings.

Linda Deal, M.Ed.
"My husband, Lou, and I decided to take the program together. I had been teaching 18 years. I work as an elementary math specialist in a variety of remedial programs and teach elementary teachers how to teach math in the Continuing Education Department of Seattle Pacific University. Lou and I knew after our first Lesley class that it was an excellent program. Our professor was from Harvard, which scared us to death, but he turned out to be wonderful. That first class, Perspectives in Education, was a great beginning. It taught us to look at different issues from different people's shoes. For a lot of us who had been out of college for quite a while, it was quite a revealing course. In education, I think you get kind of slanted after a while. You see kids and parents and families from a single perspective, which may not always be the correct one. Teaching 20 years ago was not the same as teaching today; it's not the same group of kids. Society is changing and we teachers are trying to change to keep up. What's so good about the Lesley program is that it's current and it's practical. "Rather than having students uproot themselves for their graduate education, we come to serve our students' where they reside." -instructor, creative arts in learning program

Multiple Roles
- the many facets of Drama teaching
This article appeared in the June 2000 edition of MASK.
The current edition of Mask is available to members and hard copies of the full editions of backdated copies can be purchased from Drama Victoria by contacting the office In discussing the roles of the drama teacher, based on her postgraduate thesis, Prue Wales, makes some very incisive and useful observations about the demands placed on all of us at the coal face. I have taken a break from teaching this year. To be honest I needed to remove myself from the stress and constant demands that were being placed on me, often I might add by myself. I felt that I wouldn't be able to cope with another year of continuous rehearsals and productions, planning and implementing, teaching and studying. Each year I kept taking on more and more work. And each year, I planned further projects I could undertake the following year to enhance my school programs. The fact is I felt, and indeed still feel passionate about my job. I love what I do but I was exhausted. I needed time to evaluate where I wanted to go with my career and try to work out how I could reduce my stress load. In the last edition of Mask I discussed the importance of teachers' stories and argued that our stories help us find meaning in our personal and professional lives. My Master of Education study, which was concerned with my own experiences as a drama teacher over a six-year period, helped me recognise the enormity of my own and other drama teachers' jobs. I began to identify the multiple roles I had to assume in my working life. This enabled me to recognise how many skills I had developed and used during my career. I developed a clearer understanding as to why I felt constantly stressed.

Sexuality Education
In the United States, education is controlled by the individual states which may leave decisions to the local level or may set guidelines for curricula and subject matter. Twenty-two states and the District of Columbia require schools to provide both sexuality and STD/HIV education; another 15 states require STD/HIV education; and 13 states have no requirements. Before 1998, 10 states required that sexuality education programs teach abstinence and did not require the inclusion of information about contraception. Thirteen states required that sexuality education teach abstinence in addition to information about condoms and contraception. Most mandates for abstinence education came from state legislatures rather than from state departments of education.

Mission Statement
The Department of Theater Studies combines cutting edge theater research,
including the creation and development of new works for the theater, with
new approaches to the study and interpretation of the riches of world drama.
Our unique role within the university is to marry theory and practice in
both our research and teaching through scholarly and creative endeavors
that earn national and international attention. Among our majors we create enlightened artists and scholars. The hundreds
of students who take our courses each year gain an appreciation of the
value of the imagination in their approach to their work and their lives.
As we begin to engage with more graduate students in a variety of
disciplines, we hope to acquaint them with ways in which the theater
itself is the best laboratory for theater research, as well as the ways in which theater influences and is influenced by the society in which it is created.

Program Description
The Department of Drama/Dance provides a lively theatre production environment and academic program that is positive, supportive and rigorous in its expectations of graduate students. The goal of the professional training at an advanced level is to prepare the student artist for a career in the professional theatre or theatre education. Graduate students are given opportunities to teach in labs, shops, studios and in the classroom because we recognize that teaching one's art has become an integral, beneficial and often necessary part of the professional artist's career. Teaching also further develops the students' understanding of their own craft and theory. All programs in the Department of Drama/Dance are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) and we are a participating member of the University/Resident Theatre Association (U/RTA). The Department of Drama/Dance is one of four programs - Art, Drama/Dance, Music, and Media Arts-within the School of Fine Arts. The department has an average enrollment of 200 undergraduate students and 15-24 graduate students. The teaching staff consists of 15 full-time faculty, several adjunct faculty and a production staff of three. All staff and faculty are active artists and scholars in their respective areas of expertise.

DRAMA AT GREENWICH ACADEMY Drama is an important aspect of education and enrichment at Greenwich Academy. Drama productions provide the stage for student actors, enlist the expertise of student technicians and celebrate individual talents and collaborative efforts. In addition, every year a number of theater companies, actors, directors and technicians visit the Academy and share their knowledge, experience and cultural heritage with the students.
Greenwich Academy drama productions explore new territories technologically, thematically and technically. The talents and diverse interests of faculty and students generate an extraordinary range of projects.
The Drama Department offers students a chance to explore classic and modern dramatic literature through the study of movement, voice, improvisation and scene study. In both the Lower and Middle Schools, students are given a chance to explore drama. As the students grow older, their challenges increase. Group VII tackles Gilbert and Sullivan, Group VIII performs in a special Arts Night musical and Group IX performs a complete Shakespearean play.
