About The Pajama Game
In 1954, a young producer, Frederick Brisson, owed a great many favors to friends in the vaude-ville circuit. Luckily for him, he stumbled across a novel by Richard Bissell entitled 7 1/2 cents. Brisson lifted the idea, then fused it with music from Richard Adler and Jerry Ross. By casting his friends in

Drama drives fantastic Dears By Matt Galloway The throng snaking up Spadina to College Friday was for the El Mo's queer disco night, Vaseline, but it should have been the lineup to see pop romantique ensemble the Dears. Just give the Montreal crew a few more visits to town. By the time the five-piece was finished, you couldn't walk three steps without running into someone proclaiming the Dears the best band in Canada. They may be right. Friday's gig was not the full orchestra set the band have been threatening to bring to town, but was no less impressive. The Dears seem tied to high drama, from their tortured pop songs, each of which sounds like the outline for a short film, right down to their gear-stuffed tour van, which died outside the El Mo and had to be towed away after the gig. Joined by a two-piece horn section that only occasionally distinguished itself from the space-rock din, the band alternated between sheets of drone-damaged white noise and equally epic pop songs, with Natalia Yanchak's battered Farfisa and Jonathan Cohen's guitar battling for supremacy. A feverish mix in itself, but utterly deadly when you have someone like volatile frontman Murray Lightburn leading the charge. Staring out into space like a serial killer, and with a kerchief tied around his neck, Lightburn pranced and crooned like a grade-A pop star, slowly cranking up the tension as the set wore on.

Omari Taylor
Despite the incessant praise Seattle receives for embracing different genres of music, its lack of hip-hop venues and support of hip-hop in general is surprisingly low. Disgustingly low, even. Which brings me to the recent shooting, around 3 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23. Guns were fired in a parking lot within the vicinity of the Bohemian Cafe, resulting in five people injured, three of them seriously, in as many seconds. The Bohemian is a nightclub that just happens to located in Pioneer Square, which, despite heavy police patrolling, is still notorious for violent incidents. As a matter of fact, the shooting occurred shortly after the police van pulled away. Later that afternoon, Schell used the shooting to fuel his never-ending crusade to get music that he and others like him find objectionable out of the city. Blame for the shooting, was, true to form, placed squarely on the Bohemian Cafe, or, more accurately, the people who patronize it. Schell wasted no time whatsoever in condemning the easiest scapegoats on hand. He said in a speech (where several Pioneer Square business people were present as well), "This was something that got out of control because of an event at a club. Hip-hop music generated the type of excitement, after hours, at 3 in the morning, 3:08 to be precise, and the police were on it right away - but it has to do with a recipe of alcohol and guns and the wrong kind of music at the wrong time of day that resulted in this tragedy. It's not something that we can accept in this community."

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. A woman at piano has traditionally symbolized the pleasures of genteel society. (1) For the past three centuries, women have enriched the quality of home life by playing beautiful music at the piano. However, while encouraged as amateurs, men traditionally did not pursue music professionally. Nevertheless, women throughout the twentieth century played a large and important role in furthering the art of piano teaching and piano performing in America. Unfortunately, their accomplishments are not recognized in current piano pedagogy textbooks or periodical literature. Perhaps as a result, many female independent teachers today do not fully appreciate the rich legacy of their past and the vital importance of their work to American musical life.
