COOL TEACHING LESSONS AND UNITS ALONG WITH RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS Short Cuts: WEBQUEST UNITS RESEARCH MODULES ONLINE PROJECTS READY MADE UNITS ... STUDENT RESOURCES Some personal notes about this web page: It is designed as a resource for teachers K-12 who wish to find quality ready-made units and lessons for all subjects, or who wish to develop their own units. This page emphasizes engaged learning models such as WebQuests, Research Modules and Project-Based Learning, but links include other forms of lessons and tutorials. Included also are sites to help you build your own units as well as some examples of sources to help students do research.
Some of these units depend on the ability of students to do interactive work with others using technology. However, even if you have one or no computer in your classroom, most of the units linked at this site can be of much help. They are great learning experiences not only because of technology, but because they also involve students in activities that challenge them to solve problems by doing quality research, analyzing information, synthesizing possibilities, making judgments and then creating interesting products in order to communicate their results. Technology can be used as tools in making these exciting learning experiences even deeper, richer and more motivating.
There is no glitz in this page - just links to wonderful ways for your students to learn. Enjoy!

EMAIL this page to a friend Children learn to read by reading and learn to write by writing. They learn to talk by talking. Most teachers are well aware that they ought to incorporate all four elements of language in their curricula: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. But it is reading and writing that they concentrate on. Listening and speaking are more difficult to structure. Drama can provide the perfect opportunity for students to practice listening and speaking in a context that is real for them. Teaching Drama to Young Children has been written for teachers of children aged five to eight who would like to teach drama, but are not sure how to begin. The author gives specific instruction on setting up activities to develop children's imaginations, organizing abilities, confidence, and language. Teachers will quickly understand the content, form, and progression of a drama class so that they can develop their own ideas in response to the needs and interests of their own classes.

Virtual Chat with Adolf Hitler : In this innovative "artificial intelligence" activity from Russel Tarr at ActiveHistory, users can type in questions which Hitler answers. If you are stuck for a question, you can ask the computer to suggest one from a variety of categories, and if Hitler does not respond correctly it is possible to submit the question to ActiveHistory so that his 'brain' can be updated. All people who contribute in this way are given full recognition on a separate 'credits' page. Lesson plans to make use of the resource in the classroom are also provided, and this is an original and engaging way of learning about Nazi Germany.

An Interactive Videodisc Drama: The Case of Frank Hall

William G. Harless
National Library of Medicine A videodisc-based, voice-driven, microprocessor-controlled case model designed by the author is described. The model supports experiential, contextual, and discovery learning in a variety of educational settings. General design considerations for this technique are reviewed. The critical events and outcomes within an interactive drama are determined through probability analysis and decision tables. There is no predetermined event or outcome as a result of action taken by the user. An instructor may prescribe factors within the drama, which influence the events and outcomes, but may not dictate in advance any event or outcome. This important aspect of interactive drama creates the opportunity for discovery learning in the classroom, since teacher and student alike are actively participating in, and spontaneously responding to, evolving situations relevant to the learning goals. In this way interactive drama has the potential to improve the quality of student-student exchanges as well as student-teacher relationships in the classroom. Technology Configuration The hardware used to develop and utilize an interactive drama currently consists of an IBM PC/XT microprocessor; a Votan VPC-2000 voice system; a Pioneer LD-V6000 videodisc player, and a Sony color monitor. The effective integration of the capabilities of these technologies is essential to the realization of the educational strategies embodied in the interactive drama format. Specifically, the

I have 20-24 centers available to my students at all times. At each of these centers, there is anywhere from 3-6 (or more) different choices at that particular center. My centers are Journal, Big Books, Read the Room, D.E.A.R, Buddy Read, Poetry/Rhyme/Song, Wonderful Words, Writing Folders (revisit work done during our separate writing time), LIstening Center, Pocket Charts, ABC Center, Write the Room, Sentence Fun!, Story Center, Letter Writing, Social Studies/Science (not always open-usually if I have something for them to complete related to a science or social studies lesson), Drama Center, Browsing Box, Computer, Story Retelling (with props).
Journal, D.E.A.R. and Browsing Box are "HAVE TO" centers. Journal and DEAR(independent reading) need to be visited at least three times each per week. Browsing Box is visited at least once a week. The rest of the centers are not "HAVE TO" centers unless I decide I'd like to make it one for the week, then I simply star the box on their center chart before I copy it for the week.
