Blues Educators
... BITS Home Blues In The Schools What I found out is that blues is more than music; it is the life story of what African-Americans endured in the South. A high school student I have been taught something that cannot be measured by grades; I have been taught to listen to music. The magic I've found is that through the musician singing about the trials of his life, it manages to brighten up mine. The first time I felt that, I began to understand why the blues came about. A high school student Research has proven that students exposed to the arts as part of their core curriculum test higher in every other subject and develop superior problem-solving skills. Association for the Advancement of Arts Education. WHY BLUES IN THE SCHOOLS? In the early 20th Century, W.E.B. Dubois wrote, "The problem of the 20th Century is the problem of the color line." Through the study of blues traditions in any curriculum, educators can address educational issues like the color line, diversity, multi-culturalism, and interdisciplinary studies in a way that engages all aged students. At a time when Dubois' words still echo, an understanding of this truly original American music form allows students to appreciate this and other contributions of African-Americans to the world. The study of the blues is the study of the culture that produced this music. This cultural study is an investment in the human spirit.

Cross Curriculum Lesson Plan: Language Arts
Student Resource: From The Miracle Worker by William Gibson
Media Type: Drama Objectives After completing this lesson, students will be able to:
  • Define resilience and discuss the resilience of the human spirit.
  • Describe the importance of harnessing the energy in negative emotions and turning it toward positive goals.
  • Recognize that people with disabilities are often able to overcome great obstacles.
Introducing the Lesson Ask students to imagine what it would be like to be blind or deaf. Then ask them to imagine what it would be like to be both. Remind students that a famous, well-documented case of an individual who overcame both of these limitations was Helen Keller. Determine how much students know about this remarkable woman and her equally remarkable mentor, Annie Sullivan. After asking volunteers to share what they know, shift the topic toward the selection by asking: What does Helen Keller's triumph over her condition teach us about the resilience of the human spirit? Teaching Strategies Hand out copies of the play excerpt, which is preceded by a brief introduction. Even though this play is quite challenging to perform, feel free to do so if there are students in the class with strong dramatic aptitude. You may want to ask one of them to take the "silent" role of Helen, and another to play Annie Sullivan. A student with good public speaking skills can read the introduction while the balance of the class follows along silently.

Teaching to the state or national arts standards can have a number of advantages. If the standards are displayed, students and their parents know what is expected from the learning experiences. If the students keep portfolios they will be able to demonstrate what they have learned and they will be able to focus on their goals and make plans for future work. Then students are:
  • actively engaged in meaningful work
able to describe what is expected of them
able to describe why they are doing what they are doing
able to demonstrate the habits of rehearsal and revision
able to discuss work-in-progress in terms of its quality better able to describe what assistance they need able to see their teachers as advocates and coaches
When is an Activity a Performance of Understanding? When students learn through their own thoughtful performance of meaningful tasks. When students are responsible for synthesizing their knowledge in ways that make sense to them.

"An improvisational, non-exhibitional, process-centered form of drama in which participants are guided by a leader to imagine, enact, and reflect upon human experiences. The creative process is dynamic. The leader guides the group to explore, express, and communicate ideas, concepts, and feelings through dramatic enactment. In creative drama, the group improvises action and dialogue appropriate to the content it is exploring, using elements of drama to give form and meaning to the experience." In other words...

Age: 12+; Not Rated; Musical; 1961; 151 minutes; Color.
This film is an adaptation of the "Romeo and Juliet" story to New York in the 1950s. The movie is regarded as one of the best musicals ever filmed. "West Side Story" is a consummate work of art. The music, lyrics and choreography are terrific. The male dancing is strikingly masculine and virile, an expression of the strength and energy of the young men who make up the rival gangs.
The TeachWithMovies.com Learning Guide will help teachers and parents use the film to explore themes such as the danger of bad associations, the risks of unreasoning and hasty revenge, the risks and futility of fighting, the evils of prejudice, and the problems inherent in disrespect for authority.
TeachWithMovies.com Learning Guides are used by thousands
of teachers as lesson plans. Exclusive "Quick Discussion Questions" help parents stimulate family discussions.
