Three-year Study Documents Nature of Television Violence
by Donald Shifrin, M.D., FAAP AAP News , the official news magazine of the American Academy of Pediatrics It seems they are as inseparable as burgers and fries. The amount and influence of violence on television has long been the topic of study and national debate. For close to 30 years, dating from the 1960s to the Surgeon General's report in 1972, the National Institute of Mental Health report in 1982, and the American Psychological Association's report in 1992, more than 1,000 scientific studies have validated the premise that TV violence influences aggressive behavior in some children. In 1993, however, public concern over TV violence became so politicized that it extended to Congress, where Sen. Paul Simon issued a threat to the television industry to "control and regulate the amount of violence" in its programming or Congress would make it their business. In response, the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) funded a $3.5 million, three-year research study. Four prominent universities were selected to assess the nature—not just the number—of violent scenes across the vast TV landscape. Reports would be issued yearly and forwarded to Congress. The academic foundation for the study had been laid by prior research showing the harmful effects of TV programming were threefold: Viewers could learn aggressive attitudes and behavior from watching violence, become desensitized to the seriousness of violence, and become frightened of becoming a victim of real-life violence.

Community Strategies for Health
What You Should Know About Implementing Model Standards
...
Acknowledgments
Preface
The primary providers of prevention and protection, the public health agencies, have a great deal to offer the nation as we seek to improve the quality and cut the cost of health care. Use of the Model Standards , the Assessment Protocol for Excellence in Health (APEX PH ) and the Planned Approach to Community Health (PATCH) can enable local and state health agencies to involve the communities they serve in their efforts while reasserting the importance of public health's assessment, policy development and assurance functions. Use of Healthy Communities 2000: Model Standards throughout the nation's 30,000 communities and approximately 3,000 local health agencies is vital if we are to achieve a substantial measure of the Healthy People 2000 objectives. But without the cooperation of the community and its major institutions, such progress is unlikely. Support from a community's leadership, its civic and religious organizations, its businesses and employees, its media, and others all can be crucial in directing the attention of citizens to the health needs of the community, and the role of public health, and in gaining their commitment to work cooperatively with the health agency. Every health agency can use Community Strategies for Health both to distribute to community leaders - particularly within the areas outlined in this guide - and to train its staff in the range of activities and approaches available for involving the community.

FILKING
Prior to the existence of the permanent NESFA Hymnals, Filksong books were often produced for individual Boskones. These were ephemeral items created anew each year. Not even the titles were consistent. All these items are out of print These were followed by the permanent NESFA Hymnals For Constellation, the 41tst World Science Fiction Convention in Baltimore, 1983, NESFA produced a book of the Guest of Honour's songs. This book was profusely illustrated by many fan artists. There are both perfect bound and comb bound states; the latter is easier to use at filksings. Since Boskone 29, 1992, NESFA has brought a Featured Filker to the Boskones to help integrate filking into the general program; this included concerts, program items, sing-alongs, and the like. Sign-on Letter Supports HPF Funding bill status and issue paper The following letter, which supports funding of the HPF at $76.5 million for FY 2003, was distributed to the House and Senate conferees of the Interior Appropriations bill in September, 2002. To include your organization with these supporters, e-mail the organization's name, contact person, and email and/or phone number to us at mail@preservationaction.org Click here to view the list of sponsoring preservation organizations [HOUSE AND SENATE LETTERS WILL BE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT]
We are writing to ask you to defend the House approved FY ‘03 Interior Appropriations spending levels for the Historic Preservation Fund: $40 million for State Historic Preservation Offices, $4 million for Tribes, $30 million for Save America's Treasures grants, and $2.5 million for the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Historic Sites Fund.
In FY 2001, after fifteen years of severe under funding, Congress, through the newly created Conservation Spending Category or "CARA-lite," approved an increase in funding for the State Historic Preservation Offices and Tribes. Decreased funding in FY 2002 and further cuts proposed in the Senate appropriation bill for FY 2003 will erase these gains.

2003 (1st Quarter)
Articles this quarter:
(2003/03/31) 450th anniversary of "Laudate"
Excerpt from choral-announce The piece of music by Dr Christopher Tye, which eventually became the ditty we know as "Laudate", was composed 450 years ago (give or take a month), so I've taken the opportunity of making a new version. In fact, I've made several "new" versions, as explained at the following web page, being hosted courtesy of Karl Aloritias: http://www.arach.net.au/~algernon/laudate/history.html (N.B. Acrobat Reader required for musical examples) As the "traditional" AICSA Laudate has been simplified from what Tye wrote, my own new edition takes some liberties, such as giving back the altos something of a melody at the end (a radical idea there ;) and changing some of the less sensible word underlay (which is a later addition anyway). It is offered for free, for comment, and if anyone wants to sing that version instead of the "trad" one they're welcome to. I notice that Karl is doing a lot of work on songbook material for Perth IV some of which is duplicating stuff which has already been done by numerous people for IV's past is there any hope of making this sort of society task a more unified effort? Perhaps a solution might be a [choral-editors] mailing list (or possibly a Yahoo group, or summat) to request music to be edited, and delegate the editing...

We were happy to have Cherokee Flute maker Jerry Fretwell come out and show everyone his wonderful flutes. Fretwell works with different woods and makes them in Missouri. The next Flute Circle will be August 19th from 7-9pm at CHC.
We welcome everyone who plays, makes or just has a curiosity for flutes to come out. Its free for everyone. Also, check out our Museum Store for local flute makers who create one of a kind wood and rivercane flutes including: Joyce Barnes, Darrel "Longhair" Bowin, Jerry Fretwell, Sonny Arm-in-Trout, and Tommy Wildcat.
The Tahlequah Flute Circle had a wonderful group of people share their flute enthusiasm last Friday. We also had a lot of new faces. Gina Burnett, CHC Villager and basket maker, came with her family including her daughter who plays flute. John Suttles came to the flute circle from Arkansas is and showed his hand made flutes. His flutes are hand gouged without power tools and have a wonderful sound. Also, Joe Ward brought some of his new flutes to others play and try them out. We would like to thank everyone who attended. The next flute circle is September 16th at 7pm at the Cherokee Heritage Center and is free and open to anyone interested in making and playing Native American flutes.
