The Play's the Thing
Lighting the Fire of Imagination through Theatre and Drama in Ontario Schools
by Kate Lushington
(reprinted with permission from The Ontario College of Teachers publication: Professionally Speaking, December, 2003.)
Education is not filling a pail, but lighting a fire.
William Butler Yeats
Imagination is more important than knowledge.
Albert Einstein In an age of accountability and assessment the content of pails may be a lot easier to measure than the evanescent brilliance of a flame, but most teachers agree that arts education is an important foundation for learning. In an image-laden world, even young children must decode layers of symbol and metaphor. All the arts help us do that, but the human drama of theatre offers some unique benefits, one being that it can live in the realm of the imagination - or as veteran Orangeville drama teacher and curriculum advisor Peter Moore bluntly puts it, "The nice thing about drama is that it's cheap." For teachers struggling to fulfill curriculum expectations with reduced or reallocated resources at both elementary and secondary levels, this alone might recommend the subject, but judging by the anecdotal evidence from across the province, the value of dramatic arts in schools goes far beyond cost effectiveness.

Company Information ACT Objectives ACT was incorporated on March 22, 2001. Our first production was The Kentucky Cycle in the Breaks Interstate Park in July 2002. Individual, community and artistic interest and involvement in ACT’s production of The Kentucky Cycle became so powerful and awe-inspiring that establishing ACT as a corporation was the next logical step to continue and advance the arts and tourism initiative in the Appalachian area. Community volunteers led the way as actors, costumers, set designers, musicians, cooks, and audience members. There is talent and interest in these mountains as well as the desire and work ethic to fulfill this community dream. The goals of ACT , are to offer and encourage cultural growth, understanding, and exposure to people of differing ethnic, socio-economic, educational, and cultural experiences through the arts. Through the inclusion of and working more closely with area and local educational communities, the under-served population of eastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia will have the opportunity for community participation and positive learning experiences seldom available to the residents of our area. Our artistic objective is to support Artists Collaborative Theatre, Inc

The present School was created in November 1992, to formalise at University level the long established academic collaboration. In 1999, Education, Careers Guidance and Politics and Public Policy were integrated into HaSS, adding further to the diversity of the School. From 1 August, the Law School will also become part of HASS, adding further to our rich texture. Aims and philosophy We are an outward looking School, committed to quality teaching, innovative learning, exciting research and related activities. We aim to provide an advanced education in a wide variety of arts, humanities and social science disciplines at all levels and by all modes of study, through programmes of mutually supportive and integrative courses. Across the range of disciplines within our remit, we see our academic focus as the analysis and evaluation of artistic artefacts, belief systems and social contexts; our central ethos is in the inter-relation of study and practice. The courses we offer are rooted within the traditional disciplines, encompass more recently developed disciplines, and are designed to fit the requirements of living in the wider world.
