About Us Irvine and UCI Both UCI and the city of Irvine were founded in 1965, on a former buffalo ranch in Southern Orange County, California. The campus is four miles from the Pacific and approximately half way between Los Angeles and San Diego. Although Irvine remains parklike and suburban, it centers a fast-growing county of more than two million people, high-tech industries, world-renowned theme parks and shopping centers, and magnificent beaches. Increasingly, it is becoming a cultural center as well. The Tony Award-winning South Coast Repertory and the Orange County Performing Arts Center are only ten minutes from the campus in Costa Mesa. Half an hour away are the semi-professional Laguna Playhouse California Repertory Company , and Shakespeare Orange County La Jolla Playhouse San Diego Repertory Theatre Pasadena Playhouse , and Cerritos Center and La Mirada theatres are also within easy reach. The Bowers Museum , the Orange County Museum of Art , and Opera Pacific add to the growing cultural attractions of the county, and the Irvine 21 Megaplex is the largest cinema complex in the world. World-class sporting activities, including snow skiing in the mountains and year-round ocean surfing and sailing are also close at hand. A variety of housing opportunities awaits UCI students, about half of whom reside in

Welcome to experimental school environments
Experimental school environments (ESE) is a new i3 research programme which from 1998 to 2001 will research new learning environments for children from 4 to 8 years old. Ten ESE projects and three working groups were selected this spring from a much larger set of proposals, and the selection was celebrated with a project negotiations kick-off meeting in Genval (near Brussels) in late June. i3magazine has managed to obtain descriptions of the projects and working groups which we hope will all be able to start their work before or around November 1998 - subject to successful contract negotiations, of course. As the following descriptions show, there is ample opportunity for cross-fertilisation with the ongoing i3 research projects. C3 - Children in Choros and Chronos
C3 will develop prototypes of location-sensitive devices, designed to support spatio-temporal cognitive abilities of young children. The new tools would be evaluated iteratively by the psychological/pedagogical members of the consortium using classroom-based ethnographic methods. CAB - Construction kits made of Atoms and Bits
Starting from the basis that knowledge is actively constructed in the mind of the learner and not just transmitted from teacher to pupil, CAB aims at providing chidren with new types of construction kits based on 'smart' Lego bricks. These kits will enable them to observe and adapt the behaviour of constructions (e.g. gadgets and robots) they have built themselves. The behaviour of these constructions is dependent on sensors and their configurations, and children can modify their behaviour by reprogramming and reconfiguring the building blocks.

By Sandra Guiry Crossing the Line: Violence and Sexual Assault in Canada's National Sport is the title of a book by Laura Robinson, and the subject of a talk held recently at York. Robinson, who is a former elite athlete in Canadian cycling and nordic skiing, opened her talk on abuse in Canadian sport by saying why she wrote the book(s). (Robinson is also the author of She Shoots, She Scores: Canadian Perspectives on Women and Sports. Robinson has interviewed many female athletes about experiences within sport, but other women, such as groupies, are at risk too. In her book, Robinson was discouraged from printing real names and places by her publisher for legal reasons, but tells the stories of girlfriends and groupies of hockey teams and players who have been physically abused, sexually assaulted and even gang raped. At this point, Robinson began her research. She starting by asking herself, is this abuse perpetrated by just a sick group of people or is it part of a culture? She found a distinct culture of abuse around hockey and other sports. That is not to say that all sports or all coaches and athletes are abusive, but a culture does exist. Some comments Robinson has received include, "...that *****! What could she have to say about something she knows nothing about?" Her work and interviews, however, have struck a cord with many athletes who have internalized and attempted to forget their abusive experiences. Much of the feedback Robinson receives is of former athletes thanking her for speaking out about the abuse, from which they have long suffered.
