Stronghold Veterinary Pet Care Awards 2000
Judge's Selection
Some 238 nominations were received for the Stronghold Veterinary Pet Care Awards 2000. These nominations represented the owners of over 377 dogs, 210 cats, 15 donkeys, 15 budgies, 8 rabbits, 3 guinea pigs, 3 pet rats, 2 parrotts and a number of other pet ferret, fish and ponies. Because of the pure volume of entries received - the following is a short selection of nominations selected by the judges to give a flavour for the awards and the stories behind them. These are presented purely in alphabetical order (according to the name of the vet) and in no way relate to the overall results of the awards. The names and personal details of the pet owners who have made the nominations are deliberately not included here. Media who are interested in finding out more about a particular nomination/nominee should make contact with Progress Communications (056-71895). by W.F. Andelt
Quick Facts...
  • Guard dogs are an effective method to reduce predation on livestock. Guard llamas and donkeys also appear to reduce losses but appear less effective than guard dogs.
  • Guard dogs can be used in farm flock/pasture operations, on open range, and in feedlots. Llamas and donkeys are most effective in fenced pastures less than 300 acres.
  • Raise guard dogs with sheep and treat them as working dogs. Introduce llamas and donkeys to sheep in small pens.
Livestock Guard Dogs
Guard dogs can be used effectively to protect sheep from predation by coyotes ( Canis latrans ), dogs, black bears ( Ursus americanus ), and mountain lions ( Felis concolor ). They can be used to protect small or large flocks in fenced pastures, on open range and in feedlots.
Characteristics
Most guard dogs are large and imposing, weigh 75 to over 100 pounds and stand 25 inches or more at the shoulder. Most have long white hair, although some are brown or gray. Guard dogs do not herd or chase sheep. They work independently of a shepherd and can be left unattended with a flock. Their normal behavior is calm and placid; most spend much of their time dozing or walking with their flocks. However, all breeds are wary of intruders, and fierce and fearless when provoked.

Basic Donkey Needs All points mentioned for horse care apply to donkeys. Donkeys are able to manage on natural grass very well, and only require adequate grass to keep healthy. However, during drought or when grass becomes limited, their diet should be supplemented as advised for horses. Coarse native grass, paspalum and even less lush grasses will keep a donkey happy. Donkeys need roughage, so provide hay if natural roughage isn't available in pasture. As with horses, a plentiful supply of clean water is essential. A salt lick must be provided at all times. Mineral salt licks are the best. Extra Advice Roll Patch
Donkeys love rolling and it is good for them. You can, or Your donkey will cause a bare patch in the paddock where it rolls or you may choose to provide a sand heap for rolling. Company
Donkeys need and must have company. A visit once a week is not enough. Neglected donkeys become temperamental.

Considerations of Buying a Rabbit Before you purchase a rabbit please ensure that you have thought carefully about the responsibility of pet ownership. Speak to your local veterinarian and other pet owners, and gather as much information as you can to aid you in your decision. Never buy a rabbit on impulse - owning a pet is a commitment, which should be carefully considered. For more information about pet ownership click here Basic Rabbit Needs The following information is intended to provide a very basic overview of the essentials of caring for your pet. It does not cover every aspect of the care of your pet and we strongly advise that you seek further specific information and advice in order to ensure the welfare of any animals in your care. Companionship
Rabbits need to be with other rabbits or with humans. Housing
A rabbit must be provided with a good roomy hutch. A recommended design for a hutch is a cage divided into two connecting compartments. One compartment is for daytime with a wire mesh door to admit light and air, and the other is to provide a mosquito proof retreat at night or to provide shelter from wind, rain, or cold. The roof of the hutch should be hinged to allow ease of access to the compartments for cleaning purposes and the hutch should be raised off the ground and sited to catch the morning sun. A ramp or steps from the ground to the day compartment will allow the animals access to the exercise enclosure.
