45. Donkey Care And Information At Shorecrest Farms In Linden, Pennsylvania ~ Miniat
MINIATURE DONKEY care. Miniature donkeys have to be the most gentle, loving, If you are interested in owning a donkey as a pet, the bestcase scenario
http://www.shorecrestfarms.com/donkey-care-information.html
MINIATURE DONKEY CARE
Miniature donkeys have to be the most gentle, loving, and people-friendly equine in existence. After years of owning horses and ponies, we were amazed at just how calm and easy to manage miniature donkeys are. Having a herd of miniature donkeys in your backyard is wonderful therapy - nothing soothes your nerves better after a stressful day than hearing a chorus of donkey brays! They just have a relaxing way about them that is difficult to put into words.
Nutritional Requirements Miniature donkeys are very easy keepers. We have found that it is not necessary to grain the donkeys, with the exception of weanlings and pregnant/nursing jennets. Our pastures are more than sufficient during summer and fall, and during the winter and spring we provide alfalfa/grass hay, or straight timothy depending on what is available at that time. Miniature donkeys will get very heavy if fed too much, so you really have to be careful. It is just as un-healthy for a donkey to be overweight as it is for one to be malnourished.
We provide a constant mineral salt supplement to all of our donkeys. We also provide a selenium block in all pastures since discovering we are in a selenium deficient area of the country. It is also necessary to provide fresh drinking water at all times. Donkeys are not like horses when it comes to drinking - a horse will drink out of a filthy water tub without hesitation, but we've found the donkeys will not. They prefer a clean bucket or tub of fresh water. On our farm, we have a mix of water sources. One pasture has a stream running through as its water source. Another has an automatic waterer that provides a constant supply of fresh cool water. Remaining pastures are handled "the old fashioned way"...running water from a hose or pump into tubs or buckets.

http://www.minifarmhomestead.com/Critters/minidonkeys.htm
Critters Miniature Donkeys History - Miniature donkeys are native to the Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia. They are identified as either Sicilian or Sardinian donkeys according to their ancestry, although the two types do not differ. They have been extensively bred with each other and with animals of unidentified ancestry in the United States to produce a distinctively American breed of donkeys, which is called the Miniature Mediterranean Donkey. The American breed of donkey has been brought to their current state by breeders in the United States who have bred for size, disposition and conformation. There are probably about 10,000 of these donkeys in the United States today but there is not an accurate account of them because they are not all registered. A registry was established in 1958 by Danby Farm in Nebraska and is now a part of the American Donkey and Mule Society in Denton, Texas. Approximately 15,000 of these donkeys have been registered since the inception of the registry but many more exist in unregistered herds. The breed is defined by size. The adult miniature donkey must not be more than 36 inches tall when mature, measured from the highest point of the withers to the ground. Characteristics - The Miniature Mediterranean Donkey is by nature one of the friendliest and most affectionate animals of its type. They are very tame and gentle. They are also easier to manage in everyday life than some donkeys simply because they are smaller. They love their owners and seek attention. They do this with friendly nudges and brays and funny little sounds designed to get you to pay attention to them. The miniature donkey is extremely intelligent and docile and is easily trained. Geldings or jennets make the best pets. Jacks enjoy braying and may become excited in the presence of the females.

Dogs are wonderful companions. So why are so many of them found in animal shelters? Why are so many people willing to part with the dogs that they bring into their homes? Studies show that there are several specific factors, all of which are potentially modifiable, that increase the likelihood of a dog being turned in to an animal shelter. Those factors are:
  • owners not participating in dog obedience classes after acquisition,
  • lack of veterinary care,
  • owning a sexually intact dog,
  • inappropriate care expectations, and
  • inadequately housebroken dogs.
At the Virginia Beach SPCA, we spay or neuter every dog before we release them into an adoptive home, so we've taken care of one of the five factors already, at least for VBSPCA dogs. Plus, we have adopters attend our adoption class when they pick up their animals, which hopefully provides them with at least slightly more realistic expectations. Now, we offer a one-time, one-hour session for you and your dog called "Getting to Know Your Dog". The class is free to anyone who adopted their dog from the VBSPCA or the Virginia Beach Animal Control shelter, and just $5 for the public. It covers some very basic obedience training, and shows you how to continue the process of creating an enjoyable and mutually respectful relationship with your dog. Check our calendar of events for the next class time. We also strongly recommend that you take your dog to obedience classes. Check your yellow pages for a list of local dog obedience trainers.

The following is my recommendation for feeding and maintaining donkeys. It is a recommendation only and should not be considered professional advice. Author is not a veterinarian and accepts no responsibility for any ill effects that could occur as a result of following this guide. It is always recommended to consult your local veterinarian or an equine specialist (preferably one with knowledge of donkeys). ~ jar ~ Up keep of mammoth jackstock can be a fairly simple thing as long as basic requirements are met. Though minimal, basic care requirements are important in keeping your longeared friend happy and healthy and some planning and forethought on your part prior to acquisition will make the difference in the long term enjoyment of your friend. Obtaining jackstock on a whim, finding out it's much more work than anticipated, and then getting rid of him isn't very fair to the animal or his tender feelings.

NEWS
The Right Pet for You
Owning a horse or pony is rewarding, but a huge responsibility and very hard work. You need a lot of land, time, money and commitment. What do horses and ponies need?
1 Companionship - to be with other horses, ponies, donkeys, goats or cattle and to have human company.
2 Regular and frequent feeds of grass and fresh hay, oats, apples, carrots and pony cubes.
3 Extra food in the winter.
4 A constant supply of fresh, clean water to drink.
5 At least one hectare of pasture, with strong and safe fencing. This must be well managed and ideally divided in two, so that one area of grass can be rested while the other is used. Check for poisonous plants.
6 A shelter to protect them from cold, windy or hot weather.
7 Daily exercise.

The Pet Survivor Care Program
  • What are the options and how much does it cost to enroll?
The program is structured so that you do no have to pay anything to register in the program during your lifetime. You either make a donation to the BC SPCA, either through your Will, through a charitable remainder trust, or by way of a life insurance policy, RRSP or RRIF. Part of your donation pays the costs the BC SPCA incurs in providing the specified services to your pets; the other part is a gift to the BC SPCA to help homeless animals. Your donation not only provides for the services your pets will receive, but also helps the BC SPCA in our mission to improve the lives of animals throughout the province. The donation amount to enroll is based on the type of future care and service your pet will receive. *There are three options, and substantial discounts apply when there is more than one pet:

This is just a quick response to a question posed to our natural horse and pet care group from Lisa of Natural Horse Talk about rabies vaccine...
We give very very limited shots and I would never consider giving the WNV, especially the Fort Dodge Innovator. Living in AZ, we are pretty sure our horses have had a natural exposure and therefore natural immunity.
There is a really good interview I did with Dr Madalyn Ward about horse vaccinations. You can listen to it from your computer. Go to Natural Horse Talk . I think it is either on the "If Your Horse Could Talk show" page or the "Archives page. Well worth a listen.
