This site provides general information about the Dominican Republic and it's culture. It is not politically oriented. The intentions here are to create a site that is entertaining and informative for everyone, from the first time tourist to other fellow dominicans. As you might have figured by now, I am Dominican myself. Although I live in the United States, I believe the DR is a beautiful and entertaining place for anyone to visit. So, I hope you enjoy this site. (Note: DR stands for Dominican Republic, not Doctor). Now, let's get to business... The Dominican Republic Located in the Caribbean Sea, the Dominican Republic covers an area of 18,703 square miles (48,440 square kilometers), occupying the eastern portion of Hispaniola (about 2/3 of the Island), the second largest island of the Antilles. It shares the island with Haiti but the two neighbors have little in common. The inhabitants of Haiti have French and African cultural roots. On the other hand, the population of the Dominican Republic is Hispanic in culture. Since the Dominican Republic is located just south of the Tropic of Cancer, the temperature varies little from season to season. Average temperatures range from the high 70s during the day and the low 70s at night.

Caribbean Regional Development: The Dominican Republic Experience Summer 2006 May 7 – 29, 2006 Sponsored by the Department of Geography and the Urban and Regional Planning Program in the College of Social Science Arranged through the Office of Study Abroad (OSA) What's this program about? This program organized by the Michigan State University College of Social Science offers students an opportunity to earn academic credit while experiencing Dominican culture and traditions. The program uses the Dominican Republic as a laboratory and places particular emphasis on understanding the interaction between human and physical aspects of development focusing on the role of tourism. Where does it take place? The Dominican Republic, where Columbus dropped anchor at the end of his first voyage, shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. It is the destination of many thousands of tourists who are attracted by the islands' tropical climate and extraordinary natural beauty. The Dominican Republic provides an excellent environment to study the interaction between human and physical aspects of development. Through classroom presentations and field experiences, students will study the Dominican Republic in the context of general Latin American development and urbanization trends. These discussions will focus on the relationships among tourism and population growth issues, rural to urban migration and the internal structure of Santo Domingo.

Harnessing Women's Work: Restructuring Agricultural and Industrial Labor Forces in the Dominican Republic* Abstract: The recent period of crisis and adjustment in Latin America and the Caribbean is fueling a fundamentally gendered process of labor force restructuring in both agriculture and industry. An analysis of ongoing changes in the Dominican Republic finds that one of the most striking shifts in the labor market landscape involves women's increasing incorporation into nontraditional agriculture and export manufacturing. The Dominican state and corporations collaborate in devaluing and harnessing women's labor in these sectors, enhancing private profits and the success of export-led development strategies.

The second largest nation in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles, with Haiti occupying the western portion. Situated in the heart of the region, between North and South America, the country is bathed by the Caribbean Sea on the south coast and the Atlantic Ocean to the north. With a land area of 48,442 square kilometers, it is larger than the Bahamas, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, all the Virgin Islands and the entire French West Indies put together. The Dominican Republic is approximately the size of the US state of Maryland. To the west are Jamaica and Cuba; Puerto Rico is east beyond the 112-kilometer Mona Passage; and the southern tip of Florida is about 1,000 kilometers away. The DR shares a land frontier of 275 kms with Haiti. Topography
A land of contrasts with towering mountains and rocky cliffs, rain forests, fertile valleys, cacti-studded desert regions, 1,600 kilometers of coastline and around 300 kilometers of prime soft sand beaches. The country is crossed by four rugged mountain ranges bisecting northwest to southeast. The largest is the Cordillera Central with Pico Duarte, the tallest point in the Caribbean, rising over 3,175 meters high. Three large fertile valleys rest between the ranges, one of which holds Lake Enriquillo in the southwest, the lowest point in the Caribbean falling 40 meters below sea level and the only salt water lake in the world inhabited by crocodiles.
