Geography of the Dominican Republic
The geography of the country is greatly diverse, ranging from arid semi-desert plains to luxuriant valleys of tropical rain forests, which results in a wide variety of vegetation. Most of the tourists who come to visit are initially attracted to its magnificent golden sandy beaches that extend over one-third of its 870-mile coastal regions that define three-quarters of its borders. This is particularly true of the northern Atlantic side of the country. It is thus in this region that the majority of tourist attractions, hotels and resorts are concentrated, particularly in the 40-mile zone between Puerto Plata and Cabarete
However, there are also many others who believe that it is within the interior of the country that the true charm and beauty of the Dominican Republic can be found. Its three main mountain ranges run roughly parallel to each other in an east/west direction, and are most impressive. The Cordilla Centrale is the highest mountain range on the island, extending from the interior of Haiti all the way to San Cristobal in the south, close to the capital of Santo Domingo. It includes Pico Duarte, the highest mountain in the Caribbean at a height of 3,175 meters (over 10,000 feet). During the winter season, thick snow can frequently cover its peak.

The Dominican Republic is a Spanish-speaking representative democracy located on the eastern portion of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, bordering Haiti. A legacy of unsettled, mostly non-representative, rule for much of the 20th century — most notably the thirty-two year reign of the military leader Rafael Le³nidas Trujillo — lasted until 1961. The Dominican Republic ("do-MIN-i-kun") also called Quisqueya by its inhabitants, should not be confused with Dominica ("do-min-EE-ka"), another Caribbean country. Natural Regions
The central region is dominated by the Cordillera Central (Central Range); it runs eastward from the Haitian border and turns southward at the Valle de Constanza (or Constanza Valley) to end in the Caribbean Sea. This southward branch is known as the Sierra de Ocoa. The Cordillera Central is 2,000 meters high near the Haitian border and reaches a height of 3,087 meters at Pico Duarte, the highest point in the country. An eastern branch of the Cordillera Central extends through the Sierra de Yamasá to the Cordillera Oriental (Eastern Range). The main peaks of these two mountain groups are not higher than 880 meters. The Cordillera Oriental is also known as the Sierra de Seibo.

Further to the north, Cordillera Septentrional stretches along the Atlantic coast from Monte Cristi near the Haitian border to San Francisco de Macorís. This mountain range divides the Atlantic coast and the fertile Cibao valley which contains the gold mines that formerly brought Christopher Columbus and the Spaniards rushing back to the island after their initial "discovery" of America. Tourists in the north (Puerto Plata region) should not miss an exploratory day-trip into the magical valleys of Cordillera Septentrional, especially around Jarabacoa, a region called locally the "Dominican Alps.
The Cordillera Oriental, on the east, is the smallest of the three main mountain ranges. Two more mountain ranges are Neiba Sierra and Sierra de Bahoruco both in the southwest of the country. These ranges partially surround the unusual inland saltwater Lake Enriquillo, the lowest point in the Caribbean at 27 meters below sea level.
The Southeastern region of the island, including the area surrounding the capital city of Santo Domingo, is mostly covered with rolling plains. To the west, along the northern two-thirds of the border with Haiti, the land is quite arid, with typical thorn shrubs and some varieties of cacti, and sparsely populated.

    Geography and Geographical Features
Reportedly, the physical beauty of the region fascinated the first Europeans who traveled to the Caribbean. These Spaniards in Columbus' ships described the Caribbean as green and fertile, cooled by the trade winds, with a climate of `perpetual spring'. The lush vegetation, types of fruits and the flora and fauna were portrayed with great enthusiasm. The Caribbean region, located in the tropics, extends in a broad arc of over 4000 km from the Bahamas in the north to Guyana and Suriname in the south. The region also includes, based on historical factors, Belize which is in Central America bordering Mexico and Guatemala. The countries are widely different in physical and population size as well as landforms and geology. Three marine geographical features, often intermixed, are evident in the sweep of the Caribbean archipelago and in the mainland territories. There is first an outer ring of mainly coral islands with white sand beaches from The Bahamas, to the Turks and Caicos, the Cayman Islands and embracing parts of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the eastern parts of Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Lucia, the Grenadines, parts of Grenada, Tobago and Barbados. The second inner ring of more volcanic islands, with black sands, includes the islands of the Greater Antilles - Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. The inner ring also includes St. Kitts, the western parts of Guadeloupe, Dominica, parts of St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and parts of Grenada. The third distinct feature is the alluvial coast of Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana (Cayenne) on the South American mainland between the vast estuaries of the Orinoco and the Amazon.
