Geography
The Dominican Republic is located on the island of Hispaniola (La Isla Española), which it shares with Haiti to the west. The 388-kilometer border between the two was established in a series of treaties, the most recent of which was the 1936 Protocol of Revision of the Frontier Treaty (Tratado Fronterizo) of 1929. The country is shaped in the form of an irregular triangle. The short side of the triangle is 388 kilometers long, while the two long sides form 1,575 kilometers of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Mona Passage. The total area of the country is approximately 48,442 square kilometers. Although it boasts the highest elevations in the Antilles, it also has a saltwater lake below sea level.
Natural Regions
The central region is dominated by the Cordillera Central (Central Range); it runs eastward from the Haitian border and turns southward at the Valle de Constanza (or Constanza Valley) to end in the Caribbean Sea. This southward branch is known as the Sierra de Ocoa. The Cordillera Central is 2,000 meters high near the Haitian border and reaches a height of 3,087 meters at Pico Duarte, the highest point in the country. An eastern branch of the Cordillera Central extends through the Sierra de Yamasá to the Cordillera Oriental (Eastern Range). The main peaks of these two mountain groups are not higher than 880 meters. The Cordillera Oriental is also known as the Sierra de Seibo.

    Dominican Republic Geography
Dominican Republic (05/05) In the next century, French settlers occupied the western end of the island, which Spain ceded to France in 1697, and which, in 1804, became the Republic of Haiti. The Haitians conquered the whole island in 1822 and held it until 1844, when forces led by Juan Pablo Duarte, the hero of Dominican independence, drove them out and established the Dominican Republic as an independent state. In 1861, the Dominicans voluntarily returned to the Spanish Empire; in 1865, independence was restored. Economic difficulties, the threat of European intervention, and ongoing internal disorders led to a U.S. occupation in 1916 and the establishment of a military government in the Dominican Republic. The occupation ended in 1924, with a democratically elected Dominican Government. ... [ Read More Dominican Republic, 101-222

    Country Profile

    Flag
    of Dominican Republic Background:
The Dominican Republic forms the eastern two-thirds, and Haiti the remainder of the Hispaniola island, formerly known as Santo Domingo.
In pre-columbian times the island was inhabited by Tainos, an Arawak-speaking people. In 1492 C. Columbus discovered the island and claimed it immediately for the Spanish Crown. It was then occupied by the usual ruling forces of that time, the Spanish and the French. The not so friendly colonizers reduced the Taino population from about 1 million to about 500 within 50 years.
Today Dominican Republic is inhabited mostly by people of mixed European and African origins. The African heritage is reflected most noticeably in the music, the merengue. The country is a main tourist destination of the region.

    Geography
The Dominican Republic comprises the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola and several small adjacent islands. It is located 1,080 kilometers southeast of Florida, USA and lies between the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south. The Dominican Republic has an area of 48, 442 sq. km and is bordered to the west by Haiti (occupying the western third of the island) and is separated from Puerto Rico to the east by a channel called the Mona Passage. The country is generally mountainous with ranges and hills running northwest to southeast. The most prominent feature is the Cordillera Central (Central Highlands) with an average elevation of 1,800 meters. The Dominican Republic's mineral resources include bauxite, gypsum, iron ore, nickel, silver, gold and platinum; the rock salt deposits in the southwest are among the largest in the world. There are also known deposits of sulfur, coal, molybdenum, cobalt, tin, zinc and petroleum. The capital is Santo Domingo. History
During Columbus' second voyage he established Santo Domingo on the Caribbean Coast. The Spanish colony of Hispaniola prospered until the greater riches of Mexico and Peru turned it, by 1550, into a neglected and poverty-ridden outpost for at least three centuries. In 1697 the western third of the island (Haiti) was ceded to the French and a prosperous sugar-producing colony based on black slavery sprung up in that section of the island.
